  1. "Code For The Next Guy" on What To Do Right As a New Programmer? · · Score: 1, Informative

I have been a programmer for more years than I care to think about. My motto for the longest time has been "Code For The Next Guy". Invariably, the code that you write today will likely be maintained or enhanced by someone OTHER THAN YOU tomorrow. So, when coding, keep that in mind.

    Some guidelines...

    - Whitespace is your friend. So is proper indentation of your code. Make your code easy on "The Next Guy" to READ.
    - There are 100+ ways to code a solution to a problem. The issue is that about 99 of those ways suck. Don't reinvent the wheel. Like a previous poster stated, read code from other developers, follow a programming standard and stick to it.
    - Document code that needs documenting. If you are implementing an algorithm to solve a problem that might not be clearly evident to "The Next Guy", document that. Do NOT bother documenting the obvious, such as "Increment Counter" when you are incrementing a counter variable. If "The Next Guy" doesn't understand that, there will be issues.
    - Make your variable names meaningful. You can get away with single character variables in a "for" loop, but that's about it. In the same vein, however, don't be ridiculously verbose with your variable names. A variable named "companyName" is much better than "coNm" and even better than "cn". A variable named "nameOfTheCompany" is overkill. Your variable should clearly denote the contents that are being stored.

I could go on an on, but you get the point...

"Code For The Next Guy"...not for yourself.

It's funny. I have a bank of 8 Windows 2000 servers running on outdated hardware and I don't have to reboot them at all. The only time I need to reboot is if a software install or update requires it.

There's something to be said about a properly configured OS. I'm sure Linux is just as stable if properly configured. By the way, the network staff here consists of 2 people with a total server load of 40+ servers, 300+ deployed desktops (Windows) and a complete Microsoft solution.

With regards to Windows admins not knowing what their doing, and the analogy that because of that, Linux is better, I use this motto: "I own a scalpel, therefore I am a surgeon.". Just be cause you call yourself an admin, doesn't mean you ARE an admin. Your company would be spending their money wisely if they kept their employees trained, or better yet, if they actually tried to better themselves on their own. Throwing away an established OS because some Linux guy says "These servers are rebooting because they aren't running Linux", seems like a company that doesn't know what the hell they are doing.

    Peace, love, and happiness.

The continued fragmentation of Linux into more (unneeded) distributions will only make Microsoft software more attractive to the vast majority of IT departments, home users and the like. For every new distribution of Linux, you have a smaller competitor for Microsoft to deal with. If Linux was all that it is cracked up to be, this fragmentation would be frowned upon by the OSS community so that Linux could TRULY have a foot to stand on in the competition against the "EVIL" Microsoft.

It is comical that you MS bashers think that this paradigm will be the downfall of Microsoft (or MSFT as some of you /.'ers refer to, and ONLY you /.'ers refer to).

Additionally, $90 for an OS is a lot cheaper than hiring a $X0,000 per year "Linux Expert" to download kernels, recompile, redistribute, etc.

Actually, the MAJORITY of PC users could absolutely care less about Open Source. I know of two people (they are related) that are open source/Linux advocates. Everyone else I know would be burdened by using non-standard software, whether they pay for it or not.

MOST people feel they don't pay for OS or Office software because it is normally buried in the "buy price" of a new PC. Since the buy price of a new PC is affordable for most people, there is no clear compelling reason to use software that is not supported and can be "forked" into a million different version just "because you can".
