And I want to add. There was a time when Windows 98 was a better option than Windows 2000, and even Windows XP.
No.
Windows 2000 was and will always be the best OS microsoft ever created. It is solid, fast, and has no product activation. Win2K forever. But since Microsoft is intent on making it obsolete, come on reactOS!
OpenOffice.org does have its own native format; "OpenOffice.org 1.0 Text", extension:.sxw. It was introduced with the original release, but no longer the default since the introduction of OpenDocument. While the GP may or may not have been exactly sure what they were referring to, it doesn't make them wrong.
All the school really needs is a few donated piece of shit desktop machines sitting in the back of the classroom running Ubuntu. The teacher helps with critical thinking and conceptual discussion during lecture time, and can ask students to look up supporting facts on the internet when needed. That way the student learns the concept, and how to effectively find the information when they it. The machines are cheap (if not free), have access to educational databases, the internet, and can be locked down tight. Besides, they can't run spyware/malware/crapware/sonyrootkit/lastestgame. Imagine kids coming out of high school knowing how to form good search queries.
However, a good chunk of the population thinks that if their computer is slow after a year, it's because "Dells get slow in only a year" or something like that.
I see this sort thing on slashdot a lot. For a while now, I went with it, mostly because I've worked with those type of people. But it has to be wrong. I mean, how dumb do you have to be to start up your new dell and not notice the giant "Microsoft Windows" splash screen and not make the connection that the software you are running is made by Microsoft, seen in the news as the one of wealthiest companies in the world.
People recognize Microsoft is not Dell. They do. I think the confusion sets in where the computer is running slow, but windows isn't saying why. So naturally it must be the hardware getting old and slowing down. Damn Dell!
Examine what?
Mail has various rates. If I grab a letter, first thing I look at is the top right hand corner. PRESRT STD. Throw way. No seriously, burn. No need to read or consider $this_offer. If anyone sends you or me anything of even the mildest importance, it's FIRST CLASS. Don't let any of the lies printed across the envelope fool you. Standard mail is always junk. However, many bills are presort first class, so be careful you notice the STANDARD or STD.
Sometimes the firm may even have the wallet to mail a first class solicitation (although rare). In this case, they probably spent a bit more money to have you throw it away.
If computerworld served up plain text/html instead of 4 pages of heavy ads, their weak http server may have survived the slashdot effect. Oh the irony!
..that, AND
your ISP can throttle those precious VOIP and bittorrent packets down to near zero (since the traffic is signed) in an effort to encourage use of their own telephone and video services.
I gave an informative speech on search engines to my speech class a year or so ago. I explained what engines existed, how they work, and how to use them effectively. And the response? "Wow, I never knew there was such a thing as advanced search". and "You are like way smart".
While I may have failed to get through to anyone in 8 minutes, I discovered there needs to be a class called Internet Research Methods. The curriculum should cover: (1) evaluating web sites for bias and authority (not just appearance) (2) boolean logic (3) the page rank algorithm (4) formulating a refined search string Much of the current non-CS teachers are to blame. They don't understand the internet, so they gruffly say "internet sources are not allowed on the paper, hurumpt, go to the library." When the all the library has now is crumbling, ancient texts and 200 internet terminals with MSIE. What do you expect to happen? Researching in a library requires work. Computer networks took a lot of that physical work away. People got lazy, but researching still requires all that hard work to be effective, even when using a computer.
Essentially, good research takes A LOT of time and A LOT of sources and critical eye, since quality information is hard to find. There is a lot of crap out there, if you are too lazy to sift through it, you aren't going to find anything. -- That is the problem.
Right before I clicked on the article, I bet myself 50 bucks that the first tag of the story would be itsatrap. I won.
Of course I don't deserve (or have) $50 since itsatrap and microsoft stories go together like, - well - micro$oft and that dollar sign. If only I could get $50 back from microsoft for that overpriced mouse I bought from them.:)
I had to go hunt down a keyboard with a ps/2 connector because I couldn't do the install with the USB KB.
There should be a setting in the BIOS to enable legacy mode for USB keyboards. Essentially it is a PS2 emulation mode for USB keyboards - and it solves the very problem of which you speak. When I switched to a wireless KB I realized fairly quickly I could not make selections in the boot menu without legacy mode on. (Legacy KB is required while the processor is in real mode.) When the system switches to protected mode, the newer usb interface will override it.:)
In california, (home of the rolling blackouts) the electric company subsidzed CFLs - therefore reducing the price to be competitive with incandecents. I loaded up on these cheap CFLs and they are still in service today. Did my electric bill go down? Sometimes. Either I used more electricity by keeping the lights on longer or using more computers or the utility adjusted the baseline. The general rule: Any increase in efficency is offset by an increase of use.
well DUH.
That is the point. Anyone can change machines to get access (except china). Blocking the corportate website is a nice place to start. Those who log in and comment from home can just have their offending posts be deleted by the moderator. This lawsuit is nothing more than desperation.
You don't use Ubuntu do you?
There is no 7.0.
7.04 , 7.10, 8.04
The format is year.month of release. Which is april and october, respectively.
This is from the company that bought up street car systems only to scrap them.
So yeah, the tag exploitnotembrace is about right.

Selective Gravity:
The weightlessness of objects are dependent on how easy they are to suspend from a string and how funny they appear when floating.

Hello! They are talking about Home Basic Edition, which you would never buy anyway.
Gross misuse of the word 'ecosystem'. Marketdrones leeching off the positive feeling of words they haven't ruined yet.
Yes.

Don't forget the incessant beeping and whirring for searching and scrolling.

Now I'm hungry for some Perfectly Normal Beast.
Goes good on a sandwich too I hear.
Last night, I told Joe about DRM, while he was drinking his six pack. Goddamn he got mad. But Joe has to work today, and he is tired.

Well, there was the unfortunate success of wma.
"reminds me of the DMCA." Yeah it does. It would be nice if this ruling takes precedent over the DMCA. But i doubt it.
Nice to know some people still read the articles.

If I had been driving along and seen "INCOMING NUKE ATTACK - EST 15 MIN", I would not have believed it, because - those signs are never correct.
I would have expected the nuke attack to start in about 30 to 45 min instead.
