A true believer will just argue that God designed gravity that way for that very reason.
Personally, I think scientists should stay completely out of the religious sphere. They're not going to change anyone's mind, science and religion mix very badly, and commenting on theological issues only increases the perception among many religious types that science is their enemy/competitor.
The old often envy and resent the young, sometimes openly, sometimes unconsciously. And it's hardly surprising that people want to hear about the misfortunes of those whom they envy or resent.
If the U.S. press spent a fraction of the energy investigating the government that they do investigating the celebrity scandals of the week, we wouldn't need sites like Wikileaks.
People have such a false sense of security about their smartphones right now that the first virus or truly inventive hack is going to have a frickin' field day. iPhone users are particularly cocky about how secure their phone is (and Apple isn't exactly a speed demon when it comes to security patches for their OS's either).
IMHO, managers don't like older programmers because they have a nasty tendency to
let their skill-set get out-of-date (i.e., coast on their laurels and get set in their ways). If you stop learning, every day will make you a little more obsolete and make the kid who still cares and has a fresh skill-set look a little more attractive. Do you really want to be the old fart who never learned object-oriented-programming because structured programming was what you learned in the 70's and you refused to keep up with new ideas?
demand a higher salary
be an arrogant pain-in-the-ass to deal with, and
have a family and other obligations that give them less time to devote to work
They *claim* they "invented" the term. I don't believe them. And even if I did, that still wouldn't give them any right to control its definition. Language is democratic, it is not controlled by some group of random putzes who happen to file a trademark. Maybe you should remind yourself of that the next time you use the term "spam" to refer to something in your email folder, and not a meat product whose name was invented by the good folks at Hormel.
Sounds like you're blaming MS when you should be blaming your university. MS is a business, they're out to make money. Of course they're going to offer bulk deals to schools or universities. Apple used to do the same thing back in the 80's, when Apple had an almost complete stranglehold on public schools (including mine, where there wasn't a PC to be found). But no one is forcing the schools or universities to take the deal. Your university could have went with open source, could have went with Linux (could have went with Apple, for that matter). They chose not to. Maybe you should be asking them why.
Did you know the military uses private rent-a-cops to guard their military bases now? I kid you not, I couldn't believe it when I went through a major base gate recently and was greeted by the equivalent of Paul Blart, Mall Cop. That same gate was guarded by MP's when I was a kid (you would think that post 9-11 they would have INCREASED security, not decreased it).
Hardly a secret that industry basically writes policy and law at both the state and federal level. As expensive as Congressional campaigns are, and with free reign to donate to (aka "bribe") any politician they choose, is it any real surprise that they're calling all the shots? Hell, Dick Cheney even gave the oil companies their own secret task force to write U.S. energy policy.
I don't know, because I'm too busy playing this new awesome game called "Kane and Lynch: Dead Men." The gameplay is so amazing and absorbing that I just can't tear myself away long enough to follow news stories. It's well-worth every penny of the $60 I paid for it and more. I would recommend it to everyone.

In that case, I would like to press charges against every guy on reality TV.
If wood-grain paneling and orange shag carpeting are good enough for my finished basement, they're damn sure good enough for my controller.

What we call pretty, they call fugly.
The real charge is "Pissing off the CIA."
The sadder they are when mommy abandons them, the richer the taste.
Once again, this is why I love crack whores. If you've got $20, they'll put up with anything.

They're making up for it with robots--lots and lots of robots.
Only the one in my bathroom.
Just glad to see /. is back up. I was having serious geek withdrawal there for a while.
You, sir, sound like a C O M M U N I S T !!

If only he worked for his comedy as hard as he worked to get across that river.
No problem. I have your answer right here.
I don't recognize their right to define the term.

That stuff is everywhere these days. It's a powerful solvent and will corrode metal, and yet they've *loaded* our drinking reservoirs with it!

Northrup Grumman already runs the U.S. military. Might as well turn over IT to them too.
