Actually, your thinly veiled bit of anti-American ranting only highlights your OWN parochialism. Obviously, by "rest of the world," you're ignoring the multitude of dictatorial countries where scholars and intellectuals are often the first to be targeted in brutal campaigns of repression (the REAL kind of repression, not the "They didn't give me enough grant money to fund my public art project" kind). A guy like you thinks he's being clever with a little smug U.S. bashing, but in actuality, you're just another arrogant dipshit who doesn't know "Khmer Rouge" from "Moulin Rouge."

I use it because I can set up email alerts that let me scan a multitude of newspapers for certain keywords related to my business. The newspaper conglomerates themselves COULD have gotten together and put together a similar service, but they DIDN'T. Now google news is the only service that offers this. It's not google's fault that they have dragged their heals and clung desperately to the old model of doing things for so long.

I'll say to them what I would say to the movie and music industry: Adapt to the new way of doing things or don't complain when you suffer for your stubbornness.

The problem is that the "casualties" often aren't the ones who asked for, or have anything to do with, the war. Osama Bin Laden no doubt thought he was at war with the U.S. when his operatives crashed planes into the WTC. That doesn't make the people that died there mere "casualties of war" (the Pentagon and USS Cole are different stories--those were at least legitimate military targets). I would argue that the term "victim" should indeed be applied to any non-combatant/non-support civilian killed in a war. And though many victims die in any war (a tragic consequence), that doesn't justify callously dismissing their deaths as mere "collateral damage" or whatever the military euphemism-of-the-week is.

You know, I'm just a lowly member of the unwashed masses, not one of the oligarchical leaders who are above the "law" and all, but when a contractor does major remodeling work for me and never bills me for it--I tend to notice it. Now maybe Ted has people who handle his bills for him (again, not lowering himself to our filthy level), but I find it hard to believe that his people just forgot about a major renovation.

I also doubt that the contractor just forgot to send the bill. Most contractors I know don't do that either. Maybe it was one of those magic contractors that doesn't charge for their services.

I don't buy for a second that this was anything less than what it appears to be--a wink/wink, nudge/nudge kind of situation where a contractor (or person behind the contractor) was bribing the good senator in hopes (nay, in EXPECTATION) of a little favoritism when Alaska's earmark windfalls were divided up. I don't care how good Steven's lawyers are--this looks, quacks, and waddles just like a duck and that indicates a duck to me.

I don't know whether more recent versions have addressed this specific problem, because I gave up in disgust back then after the 100th Linux fanboy told me that 7.01 handled dual monitors just fine and didn't need any improvements in that (or apparently any other) area. The issue isn't the specific problem, the issue is a general mentality of refusing to acknowledge shortcomings and attacking anyone who dares point them out.

Building a robust OS doesn't just mean asking yourself "How is Linux superior to Windows, Leopard, etc.?" it also means asking yourself "How is Linux INFERIOR to Windows, Leopard, etc. and what can we learn from that?" Someone that can answer the former question, but not the latter, is part of the problem I'm talking about.

You presume to know my politics. But you should know that I despise and distrust BOTH major parties (and quite a few minor ones too). If you think corruption is predominant in any one political party (or that any one political party is more resistant to it than any other), then YOU'RE the sucker, not I. And you're also a sucker if you think that "dropped charges" is the same as "innocent" in the case of Ted Stevens or any other crooked, grafting politician. If they dropped the charges against William Jefferson, would you suddenly just presume that he was only hording stacks of cash in his freezer by accident? The only reason the Justice Dept. dropped charges against Stevens is because he's old, out of office now, and not worth the hassle. Ditto if they drop charges against Jefferson.
