I am certainly no technophobe, but a cell phone is one piece of technology which I do not carry (and don't want to). I suppose that it has a safety advantage, but to me that just isn't worth the hassle and annoyance of constant interruptions. Nothing pisses me off more than to try to have a face-to-face conversation with one of these cell addicts. It wouldn't bother me so much if they were getting *important* calls, but 90% is the time, it's one of their family members calling to basically say "What's up?" or "Hey, I got an A on my test!" and other such trivial shit that could wait until they actually got home.
It's basically made having any face-to-face conversation with a lot of people all but impossible. It also forces me to listen in on any number of conversations that have no place in public (much less at work). Do I really need to hear a dozen teenagers talking to their boyfriends/girlfriends about fucking every time I go to the store? DO I really need drivers not paying attention to the road because their wife can't wait until they get home to discuss where they're going to eat that night?

On behalf of myself and all the other "According to Jim" writers, I would like to offer you a job on our writing staff. We call ourselves the "yuck yuck factory" (get it? it's because we write jokes!) and could use a sharp comic wit such as yourself. Tell me, how good are you at writing my-annoying-mother-in-law gags? Where did you see it at that price? I haven't seen it at any reputable seller (non-pirate or fly-by-night) for under $150. For that price, I had might as well spend a few extra $ and get ultimate.
I actually considered upgrading recently, just because I wanted to set up a remote connection server on my home PC. Then I found out that, as with XP, this doesn't come with the Home edition (even Home Premium) of Vista. So I'm going to get stuck buying the $200+ "Vista Ultimate" edition for one lousy crippled feature. Thanks, MS!
Yes other users have it just as bad as me (particularly other technical staff). Yes, they have raised concerns. Management did recently replace the IT Director. But it didn't do any good, because the problem was the IT staff itself not the director. And being a government agency, getting rid of bad staff is pretty much impossible. SO basically, they get to bully around management and there isn't much management can (or is willing) to do, beyond replacing the director and hoping he can change them (which he hasn't so far).
Yeah, nothing says "sloppy IT department" like the "let's just re-image it" solution to every problem. I had to set down ground rules on that pretty early. The first time I tried to have them fix a minor problem (that I could have easily fixed myself with admin rights) the IT guy shows up with an image disk. I told him to get lost and started locking my office from then onwards. Now I don't even bother calling them for help (I'm not spending weeks reinstalling everything just because they're to lazy or stupid to actually fix them problem instead of just gutting the entire Windows installation).
I used to work at a place like that too. The IT dept. was very customer-service-friendly and quick to respond (even if they couldn't approve something they at least let you know quickly, with a good explanation as to why) . Where I'm working now, the IT dept. pretty much treats the employees like enemies and bullies around management.
I wish I were exaggerating. No, I certainly wouldn't expect them to unblock sites like celebrity-of-the-moments-crotch-shot.com. The biggest pain in the ass, though, by far is that they block everything under the "message boards and forums" cateogry (including our own/. of course). Basically, this cuts me off from about 80% of the answers and knowledge I need for any given question (since the best way to find an answer to a question is usually to find where it's been asked before on some knowledgeable forum).
I'll give you an example. I recently had a very specific question about how Adobe Indesign handles a certain kind of transparency when it exports to legacy versions of pdf. It was a simple enough question, and a quick Google search supplied me with plenty of answers to the question. Only, I had to go home to read most of them (because most of them had been answered on usenet, message boards, forums, Yahoo answers, etc. and were therefore blocked). I had to go several entries down to find one that was unblocked (i.e. on a forum so obscure than Websense didn't have it in their database) and it wasn't what I was looking for (when I looked at home, it was answered in one of the blocked forums near the top of the list). That's pretty much an everyday problem for me trying to get any information at work.
Without guns, you'll be conceding even MORE power to the government. At least now, when their jackbooted thugs kick down your door, you can shoot back.
I'm a civil libertarian. That means I believe in *ALL* the amendments, including the 2nd *and* 4th. I hate conservative thugs who ignore the 1st and 4th and I hate pussy-ass liberals who ignore the 2nd. Those amendments were put there as an assurance to the American people that the new Federalist government would never be like that of the English monarchy, and to give them redress (including armed redress, if necessary) should part of that government ever become oppressive.
At the very least, some kind of public announcement or passage of some clarifying law is called for.
That's exactly what the Supreme Court is SUPPOSED to be for. Unfortunately, at this point it's stacked with Bush cronies who would probably be cool with it if he started setting up concentration camps for political enemies.
