First, we can't blame /. for the current = power statement. That came directly from TFA. Second, although I know that /. readers love nothing better than to find fault in others, I assume that what was meant was that the amperage generated was four times that of the total current of all electrical power generated on earth.

N.B. the article is a news release, not a scientific report.

I gotta admit I'm not a particular fan of HP, but in my experience they do have at least one strength - their stuff seems to be physically tough. From calculators up, if you drop most brands you just grab the broom to sweep up the pieces. HP, you grab a trowel to fix the dent in the floor and pick up your still-functioning consumer electronics.

Basically, looking at paper you are looking at a surface that is reflecting ambient light. When you are looking into a computer display you are looking into something that is generating its own light. Effectively you are staring into a light bulb, and the more ambient light there is in the room around you, the brighter that light bulb has to be.

Don't be too sure. The article doesn't specify the dates of the complaint and the employee's termination. It could have gone like this:

    • Employer calls employee into office
    • Employer: "We found that you are only working 3 hours a day and spending the other 5 hours per day posting sarcastic remarks on SlashDot. Clean out your desk."
    • (ex)Employee: "How did you find out?"

FWIW, in your original post, you demonstrated what you consider if not exactly malicious behavior, surely undesirable behavior, by posting a link that actually did the bad thing. I was using Firefox at the time, and so did not even see a warning message, but next time you want to do something like that, please include a brief message explaining that the link runs such code.

I realize the www can be a wild, dangerous place, and I don't think there was any ill intention on your part, but I would like to believe that /. posters are not putting land mines in their posts.
