Most people have posted about the flight sim or FPS mode of using the extra screen real estate to just show more of the field of view, or in an RTS showing a different part of the map. Most games could be made to show 'something else'. For example, Diablo could show the map on one screen and the inventory / heraldic cube display on the other. Flight sims could use one panel for the view and the other completely devoted to instrumentation. You know, basically all the stuff that is usually along the bottom / top / sides of the screen that just make your gameplay area smaller - put all that on the other screen.

Video CD's use MPEG-1 compression, and most movies will usually fit on 2 cdroms. When shown on a TV, the quality is comparable to VHS, although there can be occasional (small) artifacts if there is sudden fast motion. Whilst the quality is obviously not as good as DVD, it is reasonably good.

I don't have experience with DiVX myself, but I expect that it should get better compression than MPEG-1. I don't find Per_Wigren's claims unreasonable.

No, I don't know the technical details, but yes, I'll agree that closer to the hardware means faster. Is that why so many games are still written in DOS?

I was referring to the gamers point of view. Windows has the best support for games, and you don't have to piss around with device drivers and himem settings to get them to work.

Windows runs games fast enough because of advances in hardware. When future advances mean that the performance of games written in Java is acceptable, other advantages of Java will become a factor.

    Now, it's Windows.

Next, why could it not be Java? They have as good a chance as anyone else. And, if the entire effort required to port it to a new system is to carry the CD over to the other box, game developers will be able to get access to a much bigger market with ZERO extra effort.

That is why they would bother.
