It is amazing how quickly people forget what middle school and high school were like.

Real boys tell crap like that to girls all the time and they don't hang themselves. The only person at fault here is the 13 year old who hung herself and the parents of the 13 year old who didn't teach their daughter to be confident in herself.

The group of people who made the fake boy up are ass holes, but no more than any of the people I went to school with. It was mean, but being mean doesn't make it a crime.

The other option would be to tax cars at the point of sale. Most cars have a life of about 100,000 miles. You could tax it directly at purchase.

As for the tires, most tires have a mileage rating, if the tire companies made tires that lasted longer then their rating would go up and so would the tax.

People aren't running out of gas all the time now because of tax on fuel. How is that different?

But of all the possible solutions, a GPS is the worst for citizens and best for government.

  5. Re:Like your Dad used to say..... on What the US Can Learn From Europe's Pollution Credit System · · Score: 4, Insightful

Actually the easiest way to do it is to tax oil and coal directly. Green tech boomed when gas prices got up to about $5.00 a gallon. Just tax foreign oil directly and you'll have the same effect.

Good luck getting that passed the coal lobbies and big oil lobbies though...

  6. The actual solution: on GPS-Based System For Driving Tax Being Field Tested · · Score: 1

First let us define the problem:
Electric vehicles do not use gasoline and therefore are not taxed to pay for road maintenance. More fuel efficient vehicles pay less tax.

So now that the problem is defined here are a few non-intrusive solutions that don't involve new technology:
    1. One time tax at the time of purchase. The average car lifespan is somewhere around 100,000 miles. Compute what the expected tax should be and add it to the purchase price of the car.
    2. Registration tax. I pay one already and it is approx. $70 a year. They check the odometer when I go for my new tags, charge for mileage then.
    3. Tire tax: Tires last on average about 50,000 miles. Say you want a $0.01 per mile tax, then the per tire tax would be $0.0025 * 50,000. If a big truck uses more than 4 tires they are having a larger impact on the roads, esp 18 wheelers. Also if you drive hard then your tires wear out faster (as does the road) so you pay more tax. If you drive more gently then you get more miles out of your car and pay less tax. (Also "Big Rigs" leave tires on the highway which need to be cleaned up...)

Also a Tariff on imported oil would really help national security.

  7. Re:That's not a good replacement on GPS-Based System For Driving Tax Being Field Tested · · Score: 5, Insightful

Wow, you missed the point entirely.

The reason for the tax is because I can now buy production electric cars which don't use any gas. So you could put whatever amount of tax on gas you wanted and the government wouldn't get a cent.

    This then leads to:
SUV owner pays a lot of tax.
    Trucking Industry collapses.
Daily commuter pays near the same tax due to fuel economy.
    Hybrid owner pays low tax.
    EV owner pays no tax.

All use the same roads, but are now taxed at different rates.

My solution: Tax tires. It has a direct correlation to road usage and all vehicles use tires. If you drive hard you do more damage to the road and your tires, meaning you'll need to replace both sooner. If you drive like a granny your tires will last longer and so will the roads.

I'll remove any GPS unit they try and put in my car. I may soon be spending a great deal of time in jail.

What is missing from the new gaming, music and movie business is economies of scale. Digital distribution does have costs, lots of costs. Production has costs, lots of costs. The advantage to digital distribution is the number of people that can be reached and the time frame in which they can be reached. You can potentially distribute your digital content to a billion people on the day of release. You could sell a game like Crysis for $1 and have one hundred million people buy it, or you could sell it for $60 and have half a million people buy it. Which one made more money? Digital distributors still have their prices set to close to the physical price.

For instance I like to support developers, but I'm not dropping $20 for an X-Box Live Arcade game. I have bought some at full price (Castle Crashers, Peggle) but that is about it. There are a lot of good games on there that would be easily worth $2-$5 and I would buy them regularly instead of only when a killer app comes out. I'm sure there are a million more customers like me that would be willing to buy online games if the price just came down some. In this way development companies aren't taking advantage of economies of scale and are setting their price points to high. They could make a fortune if they would start a tired service where games start at $20 for the first 6 months and then started regular drops in price with a price floor of like $1. At some point everyone who would play the game will buy it. Not everyone wants to spend $20 for a new game, but they may buy it if the price was right. You'll still have your early adopters who'll pay full price to have the newest game, but you'll get the most $ out of a product when you reach near 100% of your market.

This is a primal reaction at the most basic levels of humanity. If we didn't have this desire we would expire as a species.

What separates a "sex offender" from everyone else is that when the desire hit they didn't go in the bathroom and masturbate, instead they followed their natural inclination and acted on those instincts.
