Actually, when we had a captcha problem on a forum I helped work on, we just installed an additional question. "Are you human? Yes/No". We would either change the question ("Are you a bot? Yes/No") or the default answers periodically.
Yeah, and that would take about 5 minutes to crack. Also people are a lot dumber than you give them credit for, I'm sure those questions would confuse the hell out of a lot of people.
You'd think that given the high homosexual male numbers in that area, the result would be just the opposite; that straight women have a smaller pool of hetero males to choose from. Either way, I wouldn't know, I've been married for 5+ years now, I'm totally clueless at the singles game.
The author attributes this number to the fact that more people are switching from IIS to Apache. Check out the latest netcraft survey, that doesn't seem to be the case. Over the last few years, IIS seems to be hanging on at around 35-40% market share and apache around 50-60%.
that hatred from many nations including what were once very close allies and an economy that's been falling and falling and falling would be enough of a clue that it's time to end the Clinton/Bush era
I call BS. Obviously the Bush era sucks, but Clinton was a hugely popular president from a global prespective, the economy wasn't too bad either. Either you were too young to remember or your'e just trolling.
It's no doubt a production line type affair, and anyone but this whiny little bitch would say "Wow, they cleaned it as well. Excellent service!" But no, this pissy little bitch had his stupid vandalised console (some of which was derogatory about the 360) cleaned and sees fit to whine and blog about it looking for a free handout from Microsoft.
I agree with parent, this seems to be a production line type issue.
Does anyone else find it funny that this same troll posts almost the exact same ascii art goatse guy and link on almost every story, and yet slashdot seems completely powerless to filter it? I dunno, for a technology site, this seems pretty pathetic.
In my experience, Oracle and SQL Server are somewhat simillar for the software pricing. Where they differ in my experience is on the Adminstrative side. Whatever money you saved, you'll probably end up paying back, and then some in adminstering the system. You could probably get by w/ out a DBA on SQL Server, on Oracle, you'll definately need one.
Oh fuck, XML configs. Let's take human-readable text and turn it into XML, thus destroying its readability.
Is there something wrong with conf and ini files? Did the gods come down and declare that configurations must be system-locked registry hives, binary or XML (which is nearly as bad) files?
I wish every system/OS programmer that came out using the latest fad file format was beaten half to death, then given one final chance to amend their ways before they were taken and thrown off a minimum thirty storey building.
I know you're trolling, but I'll bite. I'd hardly call XML a fad format or hard to read. XML is supposed to be self describing, I'd take a reasonably well put together xml config over an ini file any day of the week. Also, if you want to write an app to parse it or transform it using xslt or equiv language, its quite trival. Also, considering the XML standard has remained pretty much unchanged over the last 10 years, I'd hardly call it a "fad", quite the opposite in fact. Very few specs can claim to have this kind of longevity.

I did visit one of my teachers from back then (chemistry) and she told me that she has yet to have a class that was as fun as the one my friend and I were in.
Dude, its spelled Vicodin, if you're going to proclaim yourself a "genius", you should at least attempt to spell your words right. Reminds me of that school for the gifted far side comic.
The quick fix thing you speak of looks like somewhat of a crutch for sloppy developers who don't know how to write quality code in the first place. I'm not sure what "Wizards" you're speaking of w/ VS.Net. The wizards thing was very prevelant in the C++/VB 6.0 stuff, but it's basically non-existant now.
Unit testing is included in team system, as well as a very powerfull merge/diff tool. Any GUI development (ASP, Winforms) is orders of magnitude easier in VS.net than its java/eclipse counterparts. Hell, If i wanted, I could even write an XNA app and play it immediately on my X-Box. VS.net may not be perfect but its the best thing out there, but that's common knowledge.
Not blaming any one, but are job interviews out of fashion? What sort of questions do people ask in interviews? Or, in other words, can't you tell within 20 minutes that someone simply doesn't have a clue?
I completely agree with your questions. It was an unfortunate situation, no one technical was allowed to interview him, just our VP and Director of tech (pointy haired types). Our policies have since changed due to this.
But there are other kids as well:
12-year old Nigerian is a certified Java Programmer
12 year old programmer creates web browser
Pakistan's youngest certified Microsoft programmer - 9 years old
I wish I could say that becoming certified meant something, unfortunately thats not the case. At least for the MS certs, all you have to do is pass a few mulitple choice tests, and the transcenders and brain dumps have been around for ages. Just recently we hired an MCSD/DBA; my jaw about hit the floor when he asked me how to pass parameters to a console app. Unfortunately certs don't mean shit anymore.
Evil does no Google! But this is the US, and Google does no evil. Er... right?
I think Google is officially a typical corporation now. Profiling its users etc... Also WTF is up with that god damn google toolbar? Its practiaclly impossible to install anything now days without being prompted to install it. Just wondering if anyone else is annoyed with this stuff.
OMFG!!!l!!one! 21 nintendo titles where top sellers in japan? No fucking way!
The Japs buy Jap consoles, and therefore buy Jap games, is this really a story? The latest nintendo console is a generation behind. The novelty of a nunchuck controller will eventually wear off and when that gets old, we'll see this console for the last gen POS it is.
no, sorry, its not black and white and it certainly doesn't fall into either of those categories. It means this: she lied. Period. One could also draw a conclusion as to her character and integrity for perpetuating the lie for so long.
Lets use a little example here, say I wish to do something simple like take a html document and convert it to pdf and deploy it to a remote server some place.
Heres an easy way using windows 1. Install CutePdf (free) 2. File>Print>Save As... [Remote Server]
.net is not a language, but a platform,
oops, I meant to say C#. My bad.
and if you are going to learn an OO language, why not learn Ruby?
The problem that I have with Ruby is that it is not widely used. Most of the sample code and open source stuff out there is written with the more popular languages. Also, books, googling for ruby help, or posting to message boards and news groups isn't going to be as effective for the beginner OO type questions.

As a first programming language, if you are serious about programming, learn C or some Assembler, this will make you understand how a computer actually works and think before you write sucky code.
Sucky in what way? Good code now days has more to do with structure and maintainability as opposed to squeezing every possisble extra CPU out of a procedure. Instead of wasting time learning C/assembler, which you probably wouldn't get any use out of, I would go with an OO language such as Java or.net. Stick to the high level languages, no matter what the code programming pursists say.

I have a client in there right now. He says the trick is to kick someone's ass the first day, or become someone's bitch.
