any mention of the open source project TexPerfect, a Project on Sourceforge whose homepage gives a lot more information on this topic: http://texperfect.sourceforge.net/en/texperfect.html

Anyone using PCs in the mid-80s to early 90s may remember WordPerfect fondly for ability to handle the most complex of documents with ease. It's easy to use equation editor even used Tex as it's typesetting engine!

I have yet to see any other piece of software handle complex documents that include lots of equations and graphs as well as WordPerfect did. I wrote two graduate theses in WordPerfect; having used Word for the last 10 years, I can't imagine doing the same with Word or with OOo.

Unfortunatley the Linux/Unix version of WordPerfect never got beyond a crude prototype of WP 5.1. Another, more recent downside: Microsoft paid Corel $150 million in the late 90's in exchange for Corel rewriting WP in VBA instead of Ansi C. I had purchased every version after 5.1, but never tried the VBA based versions. I heard the initial VBA version didn't work as well as previous versions. Two more versions of Corel WordPerfect have come out since then, but I don't know anyone that has used them enough to comment on how they compare to the older, excellent versions of WorPerfect.

The TexPerfect project seems quite interesting, if any developers wish to take on the challenge!

  7. Light, Cheap, with a separate pocket size keyboard on Palm Withdraws Linux-Powered Foleo PC · · Score: 1

I use a Palm TX with a pocket sized infrared keyboard for taking notes at the library. The TX has the largest screen on a (pocket sized!) PDA that I could find, making reading text based ebooks (Project Gutenberg) easy; the separate, foldable, pocket sized keyboard makes typing at an acceptable speed possible. I used to carry a laptop everytime I went to the library, but hardly ever do anymore.

I really don't care for Palm's operating system - my ideal would be something more like a folder structure allowing one to take text notes, etc. I don't like the limitations that Palm's operating system puts on me. Simple text entry would allow me to write notes as I need them, and even format them using something like DocUtils to autogenerate formatted notes.

Unfortunately, the industry seems to have gotten the idiotic notion that a cell phone with a tiny screen is a better PDA for me than the PDAs that were available a couple of years ago.

How can one believe that a camera or MP3 playing capabilities on a cell phone somehow make up for not being able to take notes or read an ebook on a decent PDA!

I first started using Firefox when the version # was well below 1.0. The reason: Firefox allowed one to easily turn off javascript and to (fairly) *easily* restrict cookies and images to the originating web site only.

In version 2.0, this last setting has been removed from the menus, forcing one to go into about:config to set this.

No longer as easy => not reset as often. Result: DoubleClick probably now gets more data from firefox users. Bottom line for me: less incentive to use firefox.

  11. Didn't anyone notice? on RIAA Receives Stern Letter, Folds · · Score: 2, Informative
I read through the comments above, and was surprised that no one noticed that the RIAA did not actually give up the fight in this case, but only withdrew in the court in which they filed the case. This is exactly what Mr.Ledford requested.

    From the letter:

Procedurally, we need to address how best to move the case to the Fresno Branch so you can enjoy our new Courthouse and avoid Judge Levi's wrath for filing in the wrong court. (Senior Judge Bob Coyle was responsible for building both our new facility and the District Court building in Sacramento; and, although neither building is as grand as Judge Manny Real's showpiece in Santa Ana, the Fresno Court is not only nicer than Sacramento but also one of the top three court facilities ever I've enjoyed practicing in.) Handling the issue by stipulation and order would probably be the most simple way to move the file. We do that routinely in PACA litigation although I am open to suggestions if you prefer to handle it differently

Once the case is moved to the Fresno Branch, your clients should consider cleaning up their complaint. The FRCP and collateral estoppel from other RIAA law and motion matters require much greater specificity in pleading than your clients provided in the complaint I reviewed. Dates of the alleged downloads, which plaintiff (or affiliate) holds which copyright to which track, etc. must be specifically pleaded and proven. You are as familiar as I am with the results in other cases where RIAA's general allegations have been challenged. Let's get over that hurdle without unnecessary law and motion practice.

I especially like the bit about sending the airplane - always offer to run up the costs - especially when you want to show that you believe that you have an open and shut case!
