Downside: also takes any chance for avoiding fraud out of the waiter's hands. "Hey, this credit card says 'Mary Smith' and you're all men!"
I take issue with this statement. I have a card issued to my cat. The cat's name is obviously not a person's name but I rarely get a comment, and never have been refused use of the card. It is signed with an illegible scrawl.
My girlfriend uses my credit card. She refuses to do business with banks but apparently is OK with me doing so. Anyway, she has never had a problem using my card. She just forges a signature. One time she misplaced the card and they accepted the numbers with no physical card at all.
It was pretty surprising to me how little anyone cares about any of this. The banks don't care, the merchants don't care, the workers don't care, and I certainly couldn't care less.
I am a fellow hulu fan. I suspect once they have a critical mass of viewers they will ramp up the ads. I will be saddened when it happens, but I think it will devolve to overlay ads, many commercial breaks, and longer ones once most tv shows are viewed online.
I think it is really cool that I can watch my favorite shows legally and in a timely manner, supporting the creators. I hope they don't cripple it too much in order to protect their other distribution channels.
Your quoted text will look better with blockquote tags. Also use for line breaks.
There are definitely some people who are being persecuted, but the majority of paranoid people are not being persecuted. Those are interesting examples and good arguments for having safeguards in place against abuse of mental health facilities. The old cliche of having someone inconvenient sent away to the lunatic asylum was disturbingly commonplace.
I lived in LA in 1991-3 and I didn't have a car. I just finished school and couldn't afford one. I rented an apartment a block off Wilshire in Koreatown and took the bus to work downtown. It was a pain-free 20 minute ride, about the same as a car would have taken if you count the time to park the thing. There was no free parking near work or my apartment. I saved so much money by not having a car it was crazy. My coworkers all spent $500 or more every month on car payments, insurance, parking, maintenance.
I would rent a car now and then for camping trips or whatever. I took the train up to San Francisco, that is a beautiful trip. I could visit friends in Santa Barbara by train.
I felt like I had things pretty good in LA without a car. I went out, shopped, worked, everything on foot or the bus. It used to crack me up walking up Vermont to visit my favorite bar this giant billboard for some low-end car that said NOBODY WALKS IN LA.
If you plan a little bit about where you live (can't really control where you work as much) you can make carless lifestyle work anywhere. Even LA.
Gitmo, Stem Cells, Supreme Court judges. I'm a skeptical bastard, but I'm pleased so far. There is no way the new administration will have the secrecy and hostility of the Bush administration.
It's funny, I am not a materialistic person. I don't particularly care about being rich or having status symbols. I think because I don't care about these things I don't want to attract sex partners that care about these things. If a woman absolutely needs to have a joint checking account with me I know from experience what she is ultimately after. If marriage is her prime concern then my friends marriages and statistics tell me that an acrimonious divorce is probable!
My policy has given me many satisfying relationships over the years, one of which is nearing its 10 year anniversary. And I never have to worry if she is with me for the money.
You are probably younger than this couple. It was customary for people in my parents generation to have everything be joint accounts. Me? I won't ever marry, not even on a dare. Girlfriends don't get a housekey for many months. Nothing is ever joint. Yes, in a way it is sad!
I have known a lot of paranoid people, and lots of times it seems to be confirmation bias and misunderstanding what is and is not commonplace feeding an innate mental imbalance. If you think there is a conspiracy of white cars driven by Asians monitoring your movements and you live in Koreatown, prepare to have your mind blown. If you are afraid of possibly-Arab men with mirrored sunglasses you will notice every single one, reinforcing your fears even while being within normal demographics.
It really doesn't help that a lot of these people think the medical establishment is part of the conspiracy and meds are part of the problem.
This is terrible advice. Nearly every company outsources janitorial now, as opposed to 50 years ago when it would be an in-house position with a pension. More and more maintenance is outsourced as well.
If you point out that your job is just like the janitor's or the guy rebuilding pumps you are asking them to outsource your job.
This isn't hard to understand. A monopoly will have lower costs but higher prices.
If a competitor comes along, the deep pockets and lower costs will allow the monopoly to undercut the startup as long as it takes to drive them out of business and then jack the prices back up. Read some American history or take a look at Mexico's economy.
I like bars when I am in a place where I don't know anyone. I also like bars for meeting up with friends, but we usually do something else once everyone is there.
You should look into e-discovery. There are billions spent every year on this. I've been at 2 companies that had expensive e-discovery actions. If emails weren't valid in court, courts wouldn't be demanding them and companies wouldn't have to spend millions gathering electronic documents.
With any technology there is always a risk of counterfeit evidence, from spoken word to paper to holograms. Just because something can be forged doesn't mean it is never used as evidence in court.
Seriously? I want to know where you live and never ever go there.
People around here can be rude, especially when driving, but there seems to be a base of civility. I recently underwent surgery and was walking around with a cast. I was surprised by how many people offered to let me cut in front of them, open doors for me, help me with bags, etc.
It seems like a bad idea. If 95% of vehicles have it people will become lax in watching for those 5% that don't. Why not just pay attention with your vision orbs?
There is no way handling cash costs $.30 per transaction plus a percentage. The fees aren't the only thing businesses must pay, either. They still have to spend time reconciling, maintain terminals, not to mention pay for any chargebacks.
The only reason most businesses accept credit cards is customer demand, and it is illegal for merchants to allow customers to make informed choices. Maybe the pendulum will swing the other way now that the economy has stumbled. I don't think people (even legislators) will trust banks again soon.
I would like to see the fees passed through to consumers here in the US, but the banks lobbied to make that illegal. Gas stations used to give a cash rebate, but that has been banned as well.
I doubt anyone would use their rebate card to get 50 cents if the fees were twice that!
The sad thing about this is that the merchants are paying outrageous fees to the credit card processing companies and you are only getting a portion of those fees. If there wasn't this hidden cost, prices everywhere would be lower.
I use a rebate card too, but I don't feel good about it. I realize I am helping feed this hidden inefficient beast.
Your AC isn't always running the compressor, unless it is grossly undersized in which case it cycles at the maximum rate possible.
During the night, when it is 85F you have a "low" temp differential between conditioned air and ambient air, so you might be running at a 5% duty cycle. In the day, when it is 110F and you have direct solar heating of your home it will be running much higher, maybe a 40% duty cycle.
The only thing that runs 24/7 is the fan, which is the lowest energy consumer in your HVAC system.
I think it went something like this: Before abortion was legal, getting pregnant was seen by society as punishment for having sex. Your life was ruined, and it was used to discourage people from veering away from norms. The right to abortion was a way to avoid this punishment for being different, and became a liberal shibboleth.
I am in the middle of moving and am considering just not moving my TV. I never replaced my big TV when it finally died so I was using an old spare 19" one. I have bigger monitors sitting around doing nothing. I haven't watched anything OTA in years. I feel a little strange about it since I had my own TV since I was in college, but it won't really affect me at all.
I like Earl too, although I have never once watched it OTA.
My ladyfriend doesn't have a TV. She only watches stuff online. I've noticed more and more younger people aren't as TV centric. I don't use my TV much anymore. I get so spoiled watching things on my schedule without ads, and I don't want to pay money for a Tivo/mythbox. I even watch ads online sometimes if they don't abuse the privilege. Hulu hasn't pissed me off too much so far with ads.
I'm going to watch the debate because one of those two will be the next US president. It doesn't really matter who I would prefer the most or who I am voting for - I am curious about what the next president is like.
As a taxpayer, I can not see how health care supported by tax money is free.
It is free as in available to everyone, regardless of employment status, pre-existing conditions, or insurancy company revocation. It's also free as in much cheaper than our current system.
UPS is profitable. I think they might have a few trucks....and, oh by the way, rail companies are doing really well as well.
UPS is trading at a 5-year low. UPS is struggling horribly right now. You are out of your mind if you think UPS is glad that oil prices went so high. Learn Rail companies are doing well, but that is because the trucking industry is in crisis
If you think commodities are where it's at, go ahead and lose your shirt investing in them. Global demand is going down for the next few years and commodities are already crashing

They have fast food call centers now
If it'll get someone a bonus you can bet that the call centers will be moved offshore. It probably has already happened.

GPS works in space. You can use standard consumer models for LEO, and there is a special receiver for HEO/geostationary.
