Same here. I worked for a large public sector health company in Europe. After a few data breaches at Energy companies and Banks, it was a ticking timebomb for management. Every new laptop is encrypted being handed to the user and a big effort is underway to get the older ones. Old laptops which can't handle encryption are being replaced, all for 100,000+ employee organization.
Mod parent up; completely true. If people knew how much it added there would be a lot less demand over time. Not straight away, but gradually as two things happened: people pirated it to install themselves and as more time goes on they just stop caring because all the use is "the internet".
Anecdote here for you: I used to work for a major retailer that fits car radios. A lot of cars nowadays have steering wheel controls; which is costly to make work with after market radios.; Standard leads for the back of the radio are no problem; perhaps â20. Special ones which use the remote control however cost anywhere up from â60; and as a result maybe one in ten people opts for them; even on expensive radios (say >â400) in expensive cars. So if it is presented the right way it can be clear it's wasteful and people will change their habits; be surer of this if nothing else: people *always* want to feel they got a good deal.

That belief is hinged upon the fact a lot of people who would traditionally vote Democrat and hence for Al Gore were systematically thrown off the voting register, which is a fact....
RTE, Ireland's National TV Broadcaster gets EVERY script from every TV show and radio show they broadcast checked by Solicitors (Irish version of Lawyers). Now this seems to me a huge waste of money out of our [Mandatory if you own a TV] TV license to pay for legalese in case of someone deciding to sue the broadcaster. Maybe this Orwellian World of constant surveillance of code is just around the corner?? It just seems Lawyers loves this stuff, after all is it any surprise most policitcians have some legal background, seems like a wacky little cult to me, but I'm paranoid.
"Fear. It's the oldest tool of power. If you're distracted by fear of those around you, it keeps you from seeing the actions of those above."
If you fear tripping over these patents, those above profit from that fear and induce more to line their pockets, is anyone surprised?
As someone who has lived on both sides of the Atlantic, you have a very skewed view of these facts. You have skewed them to prove your point. Say the United States spends more on Health says more about how much consultants can earn than quality of service, same with education. In Ireland, we haven't changed abortion laws because we don't have to, they simply go to Britian to get abortions, so we wash our moral hands of the problem. Also this fact is because European countries were heavily influenced by Religion. Not so anymore, we are recing to create a secular Europe where no religion is given priority, although this takes generations to achieve. Europeans are far better educated than the average American, healthier, and we pay less for both privelages, does this not tell you that you are talking utter rubbish? Hate Speech is not free speech either side of the Atlantic, just we have this specifically stated in legislature, where as the US is vague on this fact.
Exactly, if people actually bothered to know anything bout this, they would know all the powers the EU is given is through a democratic process. If you search Neelie Kroes in the news, she is fighting cartels which is exactly her job. This includes price fixing in her own country over Beer prices, Polish Shipyards and lots of other non-competitive industries. She can't go after them all, and some are politically sensitive [Usually to one or more of the big European countries] (though it does not make them less corrupt) like Airbus, BAE Systems and CAP (Common Agriculture Policy), which means member states would bury them (like the UK did with BAE Systems Defense Contract Dealings with Saudia Arabia).
So please before stupid inane questions at the end of submissions like that, actually know what your talking about. I haven't even mentioned Microsoft, I left that to other posts....
Yes but if Youtube et al. offer competition, who cares? I don't like the prices we are forced to pay for *doing the right thing* and buying legally, so if the market can adjust this reality distortion field, I'm all for it.
If a company kills babies, I'm not going to buy their products. In fact I'll actively make others aware of their actions, this is not petty, I would consider it my moral duty. As a geek Novell and Microsoft have done something far worse: gone against the spirit (if not the letter) of the GPL.
Yes I agree, the GPL is far more precious than babies or even women to geeks!
Don't feed the trolls, but I'll bite. You do know Mac OS X is BSD? As such the kernel itself is open source, although there are propreitry extensions (such as the user interface)
We have one of the lowest corporate tax rates, thats why. Nothing to do with love for Ireland. When they move here in the 1980's, skilled labour was cheap, just like modern India. Did you know theuy contribute 50+ per person per year to the Irish economy? I love Ireland and all, but the EU iks dead on, we can do without that sort of blood money.
PC != Windows, I wish people would stop making this assumption. Maybe it's the fact Apple's marketing is insanely good, but as a Mac user who runs only Linux on PCs, I find this highly offensive.
Thats funny, cause all this time I have lead to believe Northerners get UK passports as they are cheaper and faster to get. Nice to know someone is switching the opposite way because of our inept passport system!
"You are about to be told one more time that you are America's most valuable natural resource. Have you seen what they do to valuable natural resources?! Have you seen a strip mine? Have you seen a clear cut in the forest? Have you seen a polluted river? Don't ever let them call you a valuable natural resource! They're going to strip mine your soul. They're going to clear cut your best thoughts for the sake of profit unless you learn to resist."

No surprise really, as Cisco IOS has more in common with *Nix families than it does DOS/Windows,

Maybe if ISP's move to tiered services (like they say they need to for Bit torrent) we could opt in like Gmail in return for lower prices???
Stop thinking about sex Brian!
You're always on about it.
Will the girls like this? Will the girls like that? Is it too big? Is it too small?
Yes quite obviously the OP meant IP theft.......
nah it doesn't work, I tried it on my Ubuntu machine:
sudo apt-get BadAnalogyGuy
Ever thought of a USb Key and Portable Firefox ?

Maybe Slashdot should be: News for Nerds, Stuff that shatters?
