This reminds me of Planning Application reform here in Ireland which worked tremendously. People got planning permission that was indefinate, so they used to hold the land for years until it earned them a huge profit, Thing is we have a country wide housing shortage (not to mention vastly expensive), so the governments hand was forced to reform it, now you either have your structure roof-level within two years, or you lose your planning (meaning if not roof-level it has to be torn down). This seems a really logical and reasonable thing.

Not in my experience. I had a copy of Shrek 2 which I bought and ended up being scratched by someone (I know who you are!). I brought it back to Virgin to get it replaced, they flat out refused. I looked up the distributor, and fired off an email describing my problem. They replied promptly, told me to send them the disc, they would see what they could do. One week later I got a fresh copy of Shrek 2. I was delighted by the response, and especially as it was free, they waived the fee of the new disc!

I know in Ireland, we have strong libel laws. So much so that on Radio and T.V. they have to specifically state "Organisation X would not provide a person to comment on this matter" and then the presenter HAS TO PRESENT their views, in a fair way. If they do not do that they risk heavy fines. I don't believe this restriction applies to newspapers, but that is very strong incentive to present non-bias.

Yes, you have to hand it to Apple for coming clean, it is the respectable thing to do. A colleague of mine worked in software for South African company, in a high risks financials company. Because of South Africa's discriminitive employment laws after apartheid, most of the people were unquilified and of very poor education. That made them cover up mistakes, as they feared a backlash like they would have gotten from the old system. This is a total shame as it means the company has 3x employees it should, and my colleague has nightmares trying to write patches when something goes awry, as no-one owns up. Apple will continue to thrive, and I'll bet increase shareholder confidence in the long run.

**Note: I don't own a Mac, nor do I have shares in Apple, I am totally innocent, I tell you!

I hope every slashdotter will mail them, just like I have: Dear Sir/Madam, I, as a citizen of Ireland and the EU, think with respect, the Internet should have a world governing body, fairly appointed by each country who has more than 30% of their respective populations online. For those under 30% they should get to have a sub-committee, to prioritise and promote the Internet in their country's. I think while although ICANN has generally not been a bad governing body, vast improvements can be made, such as not allowing pressure from companies to increase domain prices, when the cost of providing them has come down dramatically over the past few years. I do recognise, that the Internet was partially created with the help of U.S. government funding, but this comes from the people of America, who would want the Internet to be a force for change, like for example, the way it is helping Chinese dissidents. Also, as with all US government generated ideas, it is free from patent and copyright which applies worldwide, such as NASA images, for example. This should be true of the Internet also, as it is with GPS (which I use regularly, Thanks for that!). I am not a whole believer in the U.N. however, I think the Internet governing body should be free form all Government and International organisational pressures (but not those that seek to limit abuse, such as child pornography, obviously). I thank you for offering a public debate on this issue and I sincerely hope the outcome will be of benefit to everyone living on earth. Thank you, Neil Grogan

Also that people actually sit and debate motions, and people get a good bollocking if they propose something bad? When does Bush sit in congress and get the arse ripped out of him for crap policys? Never. What about Canada's tax on cdr's, is that in no way leaning to corporate pressure (MPIAA/RIAA)???? In answer to that, every country bows to some corporte pressure, it has too, as they run a good segment of the economy. Also did it occur to you that most European nations did not support Iraq? We are also talking about a United States which has the poorest social system in the western world? Where contracts are awared all the time illicitly to corporate friends? Freedom is not only as in speech, its also as in services. For example, Irelands public transport loses money, yet our electorate support more money being poured into it, why? Multiplier effects, also it helps disadvantaged communities have access to jobs if they may not have access to a vehicle. It is exactly related to this broadband intiative, which effectively increases free speech. Ireland already has schemes like this, and it helps infrastructure move to less developed areas instead of big cities .
