    Microsoft's biggest threat is itself. As with any business model, If it the best that there is, their is no real threat from a business model elsewhere. If, However, is not the best then the business is left open to real competition.

    If Microsoft's hotmail was the best we would not have Gmail, and the others. If Microsoft's Windows was the best then there would be no need for Linux occupying hard drives in a great deal of servers or Apple's OS X, high premium, consumer computers. The fact that all these options exist on the market, or where not taken as real competition only a few years ago, shows that what is hurting Microsoft is there own inability to fill the need of customers.

    This is not fan-boyism or Microsoft hating. It is just the facts. If Vista was as stable as OS X or Linux, with the ease of use OS X, and the freedom of customization with Linux, Microsoft would have no competition in the OS market, at least.

    We already have a missile defense system. This laser is a tool for fighting yesterdays war. The cold war is over, our new enemy can not be beaten with these kind of weapons. Lasers on jets can not stop a road side bomb or a suicide bomer.

    Airborne Laser, a jumbo jet packed with gear designed to shoot down enemy missiles half a world away, at the speed of light.

    And how does something like that help us fight an enemy that puts up a roadside bomb?

    Troops need body armor and armored trucks. Not, useless debt building toys that are made to fight a cold war enemy, long gone.

    Ideally the best time to launch a next generation console is when the media format is established. DVD was established when the PS2 came out and popularised it

    I agree, I would not be surprised if it launched with a DVD drive. Gaining a Blue-Ray Drive later.

    I would like to see Sony launch the console in the spring, but with Blue-Ray not being finalized. It will be the big hold up. It is going to be tough, but might just do it.

    It is not hypocrisy. Google already had to go through a chinese firewall blocking content. This process slowed down google.com in China considerably. It also did not tell poeple that there results were filtered. Now with google.cn it will tell people that they are being blocked because of the Chinese Government.

    I have read that Windows Vista is having a major focus on securty. These enhancements look good But my question is:

    Will there be a point were Windows can not become any more secure without throwing out the old code and starting over with brand new code and is this what Microsoft is doing with the singularity project ?

    I would say that, to the contrary -- this is pretty much the only way to save the US (and Polish, the UK's, etc, etc...) economy. Sure, it would cause some short-run shortages, but in the long run, there is no real way you can compete with near-slave labour.

    I the long run I agree. We need to disentangle ourselves from China but I do not feel that that can be accomplished until we have more domestic alternatives to China's factories.

    I lived in Pennsylvania, where there was much industry years ago. Now those factories have fallen into disrepair or are torn down. Leaving lost jobs in their wake. But does this stop Americans from buying at Wal-mart and others that use this cheap labor? No

    Until this problem is solved we are dependent on China's labor.

    I'm no expert on this, but is it not true that U.S. companies are currently forbidden to do business with/in Cuba? If so, what's stopping the U.S. government from instituting the same restrictions for China? (I'm talking legally, not economically)

    That Would kill our economy. Turn over some of the things you have in your house and see were they are made. As much as it pains to say, we are depended on China. Need more proof? America's (and the world's) largest comapny, Wal-Mart, needs China's cheap labor to 'Roll back those prices' in the United States.

    With this kind of hardware needed to run Vista, I do not think that the Macintosh will seem as expensive when you need a 700 dollar PC just to run the latest OS and Office 12.

    I think that this is global warming begining to show its ugly face. On-top of that, Several key oil refineries are down right now, this could mean higher gas and heating bills down the road this year.
    I think that we need sustainable energy now. So that we might curb this problems like this in the future with, renewable energies and more decentralization of energy.

    I think that this will just go to reinforce the idea that the money will be made in the upgrades. The hard drive used buy the Xbox 360, I am sure, will be somthing unstandardized that only the 360 can use and Microsoft will charge a bundle for it.

    It is terrible that the $299 version does not even offer a hard drive. I have done a foogle search on 20GB hard drives and found that their are some availabe for as low as $30(USD).

    I think that software patents are a good idea, but I understand that having them can limit what software developers can do. So feel that software patents should exist but only last for a short period of time ( 6 months to a year). This will allow for the original developer to make money but then after while the patent can fall in to public domain. Allowing others to implement it into there software.

    I think that this is going to be a fantastic feature for the DS and its games. I can not wait untill more Wi-Fi games it comes out for it. I know most geeks like the PSP but the DS has fantastic games for it (Kirby) and now the Nintendo is seeing online games as a good thing, I think that it will only make their games better.

    Do you think that 4 GB would be enough space for the OS?

    I do not know about Windows XP,but I think that OS X is over 4 GB. Does anybody know if this would work alright? I would be willing to try. I could always use some more speed.

    I would consider using it for a 2nd drive in my G5. Perhaps, I could put one or two large apps on there and have a fast start up time for Photoshop or Final Cut Pro?

    If they are able to get some more GB in to them, I would like to have one in my Powerbook to aid in power useage.

    I can not stand PC noise. So much so, that when I got the money to buy a PowerMac G5, I almost did not from fear of the many fans it had in it. I held out till the magazine I work at got one so that I could hear it in action. I was shock by how little noise it made.

    I am glad to see that I am not the only geek that hates a noisy computer.

    I know not all Linux UIs have a "start" button. But most that I have work with do. It may not be called a start button but it works just the same. But my main point is that Linux does not have the power to beat Windows

    ...because this is THE chance for linux to explode into the market.

    I know this is going to make a lot of people on slashdot very upset, But Linux is not the thing to beat Windows. Mac OS X is the only thing right now that has the change move people off of Windows.

    Linux UI sucks. And the main reason is because it is kinda based around windows. There is a "start" like menu that is as horrible as MS Windows is.

    Mac OS X is totally different, with technologies that Windows and Linux will not have for years (iapps, spotlight, system-wide integration). If people realy want to stop the juggernaut of Windows, get with a OS that can actually do something different for people, not just a same-old, same-old of Linux and Windows.
