  2. Re:CNET says CNET is better than paper magazines on Are Computer Magazines Dead? · · Score: 1

Exactly! CNET is only marginally better than most printed PC mags. They tend to focus a bit too much on "business" topics and just sort of hint at the technical details.

I have found (and I am sure that the same is true for most of you) that I get more useful information on the itnernet than I do in print mags. I'm a Mac guy and I read MacCentral & MacNN several times a day- they provide a lot more useful information and in a much more timely manner than any printed mag.

I agree whole-heartedly. Too many magazines like Byte are/were trying to be "Business Week" or "The Wall Street Journal" with a technical slant. It's ok to put a bit of business-related content in a computer mag but not by reducing or omitting techincal content or software/hardware information. I'm pretty much sick of reading articles written by journalists who think they know how to run multi-billion dollar computer companies.

  4. Computer Mags on Are Computer Magazines Dead? · · Score: 1

There are only a couple of hardcopy magazines that I read now.. MacAddict and Macworld. I like MacAddict priarily because it is fun to read. Sure, most of the letters to the editor and the articles are juvenile... but they can be a bit fun to read. Macworld is much more "mature" but can be dull. I got sick of computer magazines that were filled with articles from "pundits" and "industry analysyts" and have pretty much given up on those sorts of magazines. To me, the entertainment factor is more important.

Aside from the "fun factor" MacAddict gives pretty good reviews of software and hardware as does Macworld.

    Anyway, enough rambling.

  5. This is Great on 'Legacy-Free' PCs Appearing Everywhere · · Score: 1

I'm glad that some PC companies are following Apple's lead and getting rid of legacy technology. I know that there are many people that want to keep things like serial ports and ISA slots around so that they can use their old periphreals and stuff, but there are a significant numebr of people who want to see the computing industry move forward. Sooner or later the world has to change.

I have a new Blue & White G3 with USB & FireWire that replaced my 9600/200 PowerMac. Of course, I have a few SCSI & Apple serial devices that required me to buy a Serial->USB converter and a PCI SCSI Card.. but you know what, I did not mind. It was a choice that I made. The advantages of the new technology are greater than the inconvenience of having to buy a few PCI cards to support your legacy technology. If you want a parallel port on your legacy-free PC, there will be some manufacturer who will supply you with a PCI card or get a Parallel->USB Converter. Or, just wait a few more years to buy a new PC.

As far as the floppy disk is concerned... I have not used one in three years. I was very happy to see that thing removed from Apple's product line. I do not even use one on my WindowsNT machine at work and the HP-UX machine I also use does not even have a floppy disk drive installed in it. Everything exists peacefully on a network- a network that has had no significant downtime, other than scheduled maintenance since I have been working there.

I believe that this whole issue boils down to fear. A lot of technical people fear change (remember the quote from "Wayne's World" where Garth stared wide-eyed ar Rob Lowe's character and said "We fear change"). If you want to keep your legacy stuff around, that's cool with me. Just go out and buy the necessary converter cables and PCI cards yourself... just don't expect me (and others like me) to pay extra for a PC just to support your legacy equipment.

    I agree with you, itachi.

And on another note... The speed and useability of MacOS and Wintel systems are pretty comparable now, each platform had advantages over the other but for a lot of people, either platform would be suitable. Because of that, there has to be some other way for companies to distinguish their products from others... and the nest way to do that is through the style. I consider myself to be a pretty technical guy but I also appreciate stylish-looking computers. I get sick of sitting at my desk and staring at a beige box that looks like every other computer ever made.

I'll confess to being a Mac Guy... but I have owned a couple of PCs in the past. Also, I have a 450 Mhx PIII from HP as well as an HP C3000 Workstation on my desk at the office. At home I've got a B&W G3 and a Wallstreet model PowerBook. The last PC i owned was a "home built" system with a cool-looking case and one of those Black & green Acer monitors- primarily becuase it was interesting to look at and caused people to comment when they saw it.

I'm glad that Apple has moved to these radical new machine designs.

Now, to comment on this thread, so that this comment will not be completely off-topic.... I think that the guy who got Linux to boot on an iBook should be commended. He took the time to work through all of the technical details and spent his time programming to solve a problem- and he got it to work.

I applaud Shamrock's actions, just like I applaud the guys who call into news shows with phoney stories. The "media" is so obsessed with sensationalism that they fail to verify anything. They deserve to be taken advantage of. I have basically lost all respect for most "journalists", of course MTV is far from being a serious source of news and information, however, they are behaving in exactly the same way as shows like 60 minutes, 20/20, and virtually all newspapers and news magazines. They take themselves far too seriously. I'm glad that Shamrock did what he did... maybe it will teach MTV (and the rest of the "media") a lesson... but I doubt if it will.
