BullShit. RTA ( the local public transpotration administration) was bussing people out of the city for the standard $1.25 it charges for a ride anywhere in the city. anyone who wanted to leave could have. they were just to stuborn and stupid to do anything about it. and you can blame the government for that. cause the public education in N O is terrible. before you go saying that im full of shit. it might be important to note that i am a reident of N O and i was there when RTA started offering rides to Baton Rouge and Jackson
No, the desicion to land due to weather conditions is soley that of an astonaut flighing the shuttle training aircraft at the landing site. The shuttle training aircraft has an identical cockpit to the shuttle and has special jet engines that allow it to handle like the shuttle. If he/she doesnt feel comfortable landing at the site, then the shuttle doesnt land. The Head of the astronaut office was flying this aircraft at KSC and for both attempts, he landed his aircraft and said he would feel uncomfortable doing it again, so the shuttle remained in orbit after both calls.
Actually, If a problem were to occure in the first 8 seconds they would turn up the coast and land somewere allong the atlantic coast, I dont remember where. From that point to 120 secs, they would abort to an airstrip in france. From then until main engine shutdown, they would make a lap around the earth and land at either Edwards, White Sands, or Kennedy, depending on the reason for the abort. The other option is to continue to launch and jettison the orbitor after it docks with ISS and allow Atlanis to come up and rescue the stranded crew.
thank god someone outside of NASA realizes what actually goes on on the inside. we need more people like you in the world.
and yes, since you are all wondering, i do work at NASA.
funny, in the huge expanse of space, there isn't room for two shuttles. actually, there just isn't enough people on the ground to monitor both shuttles.
There is one simple reason for this decision. There is only one dock for the shuttle on the ISS. Therefore, they must remove the first shuttle before the second shuttle can launch. Until they have confirmation that Discovery is in the ocean, Atlantis will not launch.
The State Legislature recently passed a bill preventing the city of houston from installing red-light cameras. Using minimal common sense (which is a misnomer since it isn't that common) one can realize that the same individuals will be voting on this bill which means in all probablility, it will not pass.

if they abondon it, they will expect it to desintgrate in the atmosphere. dropping it in the ocean prevents peices from destoying property
