  1. Address book on A look at Thunderbird 2.0 Beta · · Score: 1

Is it just me or does the included Address Book totally suck? (Thunderbird v1.5.0.wtv, on Kubuntu Edgy). I can't keep mail addresses in the lists i create, (they all go to the default, show-all pane) and i can't drag them to wherever i wants. Also, why does the initial pane show ALL mails and ALL lists? The whole point of creating sublists is so that i don't have to look at a total mess of a contact list. Make no mistake, i like the mail client, but if i cant keep an organized contact list, i'm looking elsewhere. Also, someone described some SMTP problems, and it seems they don't listen much to people. Today i'll try out Kontact, and see where it's PIM gets me.

  2. This can't _be_ real. on MPAA Goes After Home Entertainment Systems · · Score: 3, Funny

Seriously WTF. Not to doubt BBSpot's credibility, but i can't believe this is real. If it is (and we are royally screwed), what's the source then. YHBT?

  3. Scariest games as far as i'm concerned. on Games and Fear · · Score: 1

Feargames that completely scared the crap out of me: Alone in the Dark 4, PS1 (the PS2 was probably scarier, with better graphics?) Fear Effect 1 & 2, though iirc, the first was more intense. The first Dino Crisis. Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 (it was one of the first 3D games i ever played, back when i was 13-14) --- Horror games that were not ultra-spooky, but still outrank most games out there: Silent Hills (the first one deserves to be in the first category). Cold Fear. The remaining Resident Evils, but especially the 1st, redone for the GCN. --- Doom3 was pretty scary, for about 10 minits. Too bad it became a -rinse-repeat- sorta game. Extermination, one of the launch titles in Europe for the PS2. It had potential for _WAY_ more than that. As far as i can remember, this is it.

  4. Game franchise fanboyism on Game Reviews Don't Matter, Study Finds · · Score: 1

For about 2-3 years now i've been waiting for reviews of games to come out (it only takes ~3 days), because i've had some bad experiences. I used to buy the Official PS1/2 Magazine, and loosely base my purchases on what i saw there. Then i started getting good games that were too short, or crappy long games, or both (of bad), or just insatisfactory in their whole.

These days i usually read reviews on IGN, GameSpy, Gamespot and a copuple more here and there, and specifically look for comments regarding length, replayability/extra content, character control quality (and this part greatly concerns me when i think of the Wii) and whatever gets some aditional attention by the reviewer.

However there are some games that i must get no matter what (or almost), because i'm either a huge fan of the series or because reviews and previews bring the game to my attention for some particular reason. For instances, while i know that all Resident Evils (Biohazards) have tanklike character controls (except RE4), i am too fanatical about them not to get them (all for the GameCube), especially since i either did not get their PS# versions or had some old/cheesy pirate copies for the PS1. Games that pop up out of nowhere are Fear Effect, Assassin's Creed, Theseis (canceled?), Alan Wake, God of War, Okami, and some more.

Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Tomb Raider (yeah i know), Final Fantasy (yeah i know too), Project Zero (Fatal Frame) and a few more are quintessencial for my survival. Some studios also have my undivided attention, like Remedy (no Alan Wake for the PS3, shame on yous), Take2 or Activision.

And by the way, anyone knows of any good gaming websites? While i read IGN and GameSpot, i know these have some reputation stains (is owned by FOX Noowbs and GSpot apparently has biased reviews, based on advertising bought from them.

  5. iAudio X5_ on SanDisk Releases New iPod rival · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been eyeing this audio player for a while now. 30GiB HDD, MP3/FLAC/OGG/ playback, TXT/JPG display, works as a mass storage device under Linux. Also as an FM tuner and a voice recorder. X5 is 20GiB big, with a 14h battery, while the X5L is 30 or 40 (can't remember) GiB big with a 35h battery. Has had some firmware updates based on user input/requests. It's pretty cool, it also advertises some linux love on its tech specs' section. The problem is the price: 400Euros. Less know, yes, but it still got 3rd place (a couple of months ago) on the c|net reviews.

  6. A previously-announced physics processor unit? on NVIDIA Launches New SLI Physics Technology · · Score: 2, Insightful

Didn't a company called Ageia (?) design a PCI-express addon (or PCIx or wtv) that was basically a separate chip completely dedicated to physics calculations (ragdoll thingies and that sort of stuff)?

In fact, wasn't the PS3 supposed to have said chip from Ageia (or wtv)?

This would be cool, but i wonder how many would actually flock to it (if cheap enough (~40) then probably it would lead developers to assume its existence, and if not to default to using good old ix86).

  7. Re:No HD-DVD games == no confusion on Xbox 360 to have HD-DVD, Eventually · · Score: 1

Actually, i believe the medium in which games will *ever* come out is already defined (standart DVD, not sure if it is SL or DL): this is done when the specs for the console are defined. They can't change it later on. If more that 8.3GiB is required they will have to ship the game in more discs.

  8. Has the first xbocks... on Xbox 360 to have HD-DVD, Eventually · · Score: 1

...even turned up a profit for Microsuffer? Last time i checked, what they spent on advertising was more than income, but i could be wrong.

If that is true, this stunt might cost them in jobs, the market and costumer trust in a hypothetical xbox3 release.

  9. Change type of vehicle? on Mars Rover Stuck in a Dune · · Score: 1

Considering the Martian soil is practially all sand (at least where they like to land) wouldn't it be better to use hovercrafts there? there's plenty of atmospheric gasses (CO2 mostly) and i think this doesn't get all that affected by dust.

Either that or either a miniature tracked vehicle, tank style or a roibotic spider like thingie.

Anti-grav's still a long ways off.
