  1. 1541 Music on Slashdot's Top 10 Hacks of all Time · · Score: 1

Now, perhaps the TRS-80 croud had something like this as well, but I KNOW that there was a program for the Commodore 64 called "1541 Music" that allowed you to reprogram the 1541 Disk Drive to play "Daisy" (A-la H.A.L. from 2001) by slamming the Read/Write head against the hard stop at different frequencies. I know this, because I ran it at our school's computer lab back in the day when a computer lab was 10 C-64's and 2 1541 Disk drives (Ooooh, networking!) The teacher about had a heart attack :)

  7. Slight side issue - Quantum Encription. on Israelis Crack RSA 512 Bit in Microseconds · · Score: 1

    From the article...

    /BEGIN/
The second aspect of Quantum computing, however, will help to make information more secure. Using a feature called "quantum entanglement", information could be sent between two computers that could not be eavesdropped upon without the two computers' knowledge. Because quantum physics dictates that monitoring a subatomic particle changes its state; not only would an eavesdropper announce his presence, but the message would be garbled.
    /END/

As I read this, they are implying that this would be some kind of unbreakable One-Read-Only type of information stream. Anyone snooping the information would invariably change the information, and thus be instantly detected.
Ok, so we break the Data Streem hard, and once we capture the incoming data, we then re-encode and spoof it to the intended receiver?

"'A hacker wouldn't know where to start,' says Jonathan Curtis of Quantum Electronic Devices."

I guess that means I'm not a hacker then. :)

  8. The "Sexual Harassment" effect. on DOJ Fights Hackers with Brainwashing · · Score: 1

Here is a true story that happened to me (Not a FOAF :)

General Cinema (the place I used to work years ago) had a special meeting for all it's employees one day. We were gathered together to be lectured at upon the topic of "Sexual Harassment In The Workplace" (TM)

During the meeting, several intelligent questions were asked, and brushed off (they were clearly not expecting intelligent questions from a bunch of 16 year olds, and no, they wern't MY questions) and some flat out stupid remarks were made by our 'educators'. If I recall correctly, one of the statements made was that, if you have a hazing ritual that only includes males, you could be in for a sexual harassment lawsuit (for not hazing the females, also.)

When it was pointed out by a staff menber that they were infact ADVOCATING illegal acts, (she knew from Band Camp that hazing is specifically illegal in Ohio) they just told us that it didn't matter, you should haze the girls too. (BTW, our site didn't have any such rituals, and as best as I knew, never had any sexual harassment problems before then)

For the next three months, anytime ANYONE mentioned ANYTHING that had to do with Gender, the whole staff freaked out. They would run to management to report the 'incident' (and thus showing what good employees they were, and distancing themselves from possible discpline) What had once been a fun workplace became a massivly tence, repressed, and screwed-up place to be.

When I read about this new "Education" program sponsored by out Friendly Neighborhood Government, this whole thing came back to mind. Children who may not yet be aware of the potentials of computing in general will be exposed to this chilling message. I wonder how many parents will be "Turned In" for being Hackers by their own children.

  10. HTML Based E-mail access... Should I worry? on The Significance of the Hotmail Crack · · Score: 1

Until recently, I just ignored it. Though I have read as much information on the Hotmail Crack as I could find, I haven't been able to determine if whatever happened to them is something I need to be worried about or not. Is/was the Hotmail crack something specific to their implementation, or was it something about the HTML interface that caused the insecurity?

Um, have YOU ever heard of something known as SCOPE? Since the key is the same for EVERYONE, no single warrant would have the power to cover it, unless EVERYONE with Windows (either individually, or by inclusion) were named in the warrant. No judge in his right mind would sign a warrant that broad.

And while we are at it, what possible reason could be cited for the need to have this Key? It's not used to encrypt anything, just to verify the validity of an encription module.
