Not really. It can be both at the same time. However it requires a bunch of geeks to sit together and make it usable for end users. Might not happen as fast as people want it to.
So if no one is allowed to improve gnome, then how is it different from windows?
Priorities? I really see no change in gnome, whatsoever for a long long long long time. Yeah I do have a choice but then again, gnome defies the very reason of being open source and thus is a useless project at best. Hell anyone can make a binary only desktop (think microsoft) which only they are allowed to change. Would you install and use it on your linux ditro?
Linus is a man with a vision and no political agenda. He can be rude at times but never egoistic. Hell I get rude at times to get my point across just because some people are too thickheaded to get a simple thing. If anyone is egoistic in this case, it's gnome developers.
Games are never designed to be fair. They are designed to be fun.
Still I can agree with you partially. I myself sometimes cheat when the things start to get repetitive (to get to the fun part) however I seldom cheat to beat the tough boss/portion (even humans enemies with unfair advantage can be fun to beat).
The article is vague and doesn't mention at all what the so called client is.
Here is my guess: Eclipse widgets aka SWT. It is no emulator like VMWare or VPC however the way I see it, it isn't meant to be. What it offers is native widgets of the underlying OS without recompilation, an attractive offerinng to the companies which rely on a enterprise level do-it-all software. If you target SWT or in their terminology, open client, you don't need to do OS specific coding (actually you do but it's minor, I've worked on eclipse for a large scale project so I know) and run it on every OS on which eclipse is available.
It seems like you are remaking the UI. Would you like help with making it more disneylandish?
On a serious note, I honestly don't get it. The new interface is pretty cartoonish (though simple to use for a first time user). If clippy isn't coherent with this UI than I don't know what is.
Also the big overhaul isn't about coherency in the first place since to change the color of outlook interface, you have to open MS word and customize it's options.
I guess it's okay to be chased down as long as the inventor reads the letter which marty gave him before being sent back to the future by a 1 gigawatt lightening bolt.
It's arguably a stupid behavior to automatically reboot the computer after it crashes. I agree that this is desirable on servers but on desktops? come on. Its hard to figure out without checking the event log what is going on. Sometimes checking the event log is not even an option if the computer reboots without loading the UI over and over again.
I agree that you can turn it off and that's what I do. Turn off system restore, automatic reboot, clownish interface on both vista and XP.
Not trolling but it does makes me wonder that what if this whole atricle and story is a ploy to put linus under pressure for not making the kernel GPLv3.
Otherwise perhaps you should consider that litigation is an extremely complex, difficult and time consuming activity requiring a very high level of expertise to conduct with any degree of competence
I agree but would like to add that laws are made to be complex to benefit the one with the bigger chuck of cash or awareness of loopholes or authority.
1. As you read RSS items, they are marked as read. You can also only displaying unread items/feeds. 2. You can label/tag items just like in gmail. You can also star items, again similar to gmail. 3. You can share items which will be available on your public page to be read by others. 4. It's totally useable through keyboard shortcuts. No mouse required whatsoever 5. Being an online app, it maintains your lists, read and unread itmes throughout (duh!)
I've it as my homepage from quite some time and I am totally additcted to it.
So you have a library of all sort of blades which you want to be usable for the next 10 years (or more) regardless of if gillette decides to not make that particular handle on which they fit?
Think before making a comparison. What you said about the atricle actually applies to your own post.
naaah! it's much easier to write a x860 emulator in midp2.0 and install linux on it. After that even a 6 month old can run Windows XP in Qemu and use freely available VMPlayer to run OSX and itunes.
Seriously, Dell is doing this for several years. The only problem is that the computer without windows cost just the same (or in some cases higher) as the computers with windows preinstalled.
Iceland generates more than 17.5% of their total energy from geothermal plants.
Electricity - production: 8.474 billion kWh (2004)
Electricity - production by source: fossil fuel: 0.1%
hydro: 82.5%
nuclear: 0%
other: 17.5% (geothermal) (2001)

Did you? I was with the guy in the beginning of his post but after reading the whole thing and the comments and how he replied to them, I would say that he biased towards MS to some extent at least.
Thats what you think. Plenty of people will give new player from samsung and sony walkman a go (even their non apple cell phones) once the music they bought from iTuned can play on just about any device and not just iPod.
I know for a fact that staying on MS Office to save time can actually cause more time to be wasted. Ever pressed backspace to delete some text, only to find out that the next paragragh has decided to change itself to 45pt font? This happened to me on every version of office since 97 to 2003. In fact I feel much more productive when writing everything in a simple text editor and then pasting it in work and formating it without changing it.

Do we have a better option?
I would prefer a less than perfect specs (which can be improved by time) than a proprietary one any day.

and what when someone figure out the jtag port on a standalone HD-DVD player and extract it's key? No more stand alone players?

This might just save java.

Exactly, hasn't this been reported about 17 times already on Slashdot? The more it gets repeated, less likely it becomes for people to believe it.

Remember activeX control prompt in internet explorer? User was suppose to click accept ONLY when he was on a trusted site.
Talk about self referential. Your first line applies on your own post.

mv orange_crush pink_crush There, fixed. =)
Mine supports it three times in a row.
Not exactly a portal but if you want to read RSS than a much better app is google reader. It's in alpha (google labs) but already pretty stable. try it at http://google.com/reader, a screenshot here: http://www.google.com/help/reader/images/help_1.jp g
some of the features are:
1. As you read RSS items, they are marked as read. You can also only displaying unread items/feeds.
2. You can label/tag items just like in gmail. You can also star items, again similar to gmail.
3. You can share items which will be available on your public page to be read by others.

You are probably talking about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Driver_Interf ace
