  1. Re: Nosedive on Tumblr Co-Founder: Apple's Software Is In a Nosedive · · Score: 1

    I thought it was just me getting older and progressively less satisfied with Apple's focus on phones and tablets. A while back I was a big promoter of desktop Macs, but it's obviously not a priority for them anymore. Why does software update keep pushing iTunes updates on me? Why do I have to keep disabling things to get my Mac to run better (Spotlight, gamed) for crap I never asked for? If I don't want to use iCloud, stop bugging me about it! The whole reason I went with OSX originally was because I didn't want to tinker with the OS unless I felt like it.

  2. Re:Maybe... on USPS Discriminates Against 'Atheist' Merchandise · · Score: 1

    An agnostic may care deeply about whether god exists but just feels there is not enough evidence to decide either way. If you think there is roughly a 50/50 chance of god existing or not, you're agnostic. If you think there is a vanishingly small chance of god existing, you're an atheist.

    I'm an atheist and I don't care if people want to practice their religion. It's when they want me to take part in it too, then I get annoyed.

    Nope. My thought was 3M; tape, post-its, staplers, why not pocket protectors? But it got more confusing when I read the 'First' part of the headline - haven't they been around for a long time and shouldn't /. readers know that?

  4. Notifications on Mozilla Releases Thunderbird 2.0.0 · · Score: 1

    Can anybody tell me why the Mac version of Thunderbird does not have the option of window notifications? You can bounce the icon in the dock, but you have to jump through some hoops (YAMB, scripting and growl) to get a gmail notifier-style pop-up notification if you like to keep your dock hidden.

    I love the labels, which is why I started using Thunderbird 2.0 when it was in beta, but the notifications seemed a bit far behind. Perhaps it is time to give Mail.app another looksee?

  5. Firefox gives longer support than Microsoft on Microsoft Stops Supporting Win98 Early · · Score: 1

    Does anybody else find it ironic that Firefox is going to be offering longer support for Windows 98 than Microsoft? In case you missed it /. had a story Thursday about how Firefox was going to drop pre-2000 Windows support in version 3.0, and the earliest possible date for that is at least a year from now. The Microsoft lifecycle info says that support for Win 98 is gone as of June 11, 2006, but online self-help will be available at least until July 10, 2007. You do the math.

  6. Re:FUD Rules! Shame on slashdot... on The Worst Bill You've Never Heard Of · · Score: 1

    Exactly. In fact, the amendment itself says specifically:

    (A) the making and distribution of digital phonorecord deliveries in the form of full downloads, limited downloads, and interactive streams;
    (B) all reproduction and distribution rights necessary to engage in activities described in subparagraph (A), solely for the purpose of engaging in such activities, including--
    (i) the making of reproductions by and for end users;
    (ii) reproductions made on servers owned or controlled by the licensee; and
    (iii) incidental reproductions made in the normal course of engaging in activities described in subparagraph (A), including cached, network, and RAM buffer reproductions; and
    (C) other activities constituting a digital phonorecord delivery.

    Like the parent post, I agree that digital rights require vigilance, but just because some blog says something is horrible is no reason to believe it.

  7. Anarchy on Unusual Open Source · · Score: 5, Interesting

    It is unfortunate that the term anarchy has a dual meaning - the most common being "disorder". A more historical meaning is that of "without authority", which seems to be what open source is all about - nobody telling anybody else what to do.

    Open source projects are the model of anarchist principles - people getting together, contributing when they want to, and promoting the common good. Even Wikipedia knows that.

  8. Linux made Easy on Why Slackware Still Matters · · Score: 2, Insightful

    I stumbled into Slackware out of dumb luck. It was the first distro that actually installed on my laptop with no huge problems. I seem to remember the RedHat installer choking on something and failing to get the SuSE net install working for some reason or other. I had to put in my own ethernet and battery support, but once I found the drivers and some FAQs, it was no biggy. (For the record, I was working with a Dell Inspiron 2200 and with Slackware 10.)

    Maybe this is the minority case, but Slackware seemed to work right off the CD with few problems. Why does Slackware have the reputation for being tough to use? It seems most Linux distros have their ups and downs, and whether you're farting around with YAST or rpms or source tarballs, it doesn't seem to make that much difference, IMHO.

    I'm by no means a Linux guru, and I use my laptop for fairly mundane things - OpenOffice, GIMP, development stuff. Maybe people that are having huge problems with Slackware are doing something more fancy?

  9. More Show Ideas on CSI Takes On Grand Theft Auto · · Score: 1

    I'm waiting for other Rockstar games to come out on television...

    South Park meets The Warriors: "Oh my god, they killed Cleon! You bastards!"
    The OC meets Max Payne: (voiceover of Ryan) Everybody was so damn rich there. It got more and more difficult to go one episode without punching anybody. And then with the drinking, the women, the pain killers, the murder of the Cohens, I just came apart...
    Gilmore Girls meets Manhunt: "Come on Luke, I wanna see some GORE!"
    The Simpsons meet Oni: Nevermind. I'm probably the only person who ever played Oni.

    You get the idea though.
