With the ability of technology to do these kinds of things, society is going to be changing. But which direction will it go?
Will we become a more repressed society, afraid to engage in activity that other people don't approve of? A society where we share as little as possible with others out of fear?
Or will society become "anything goes," where people accept that everyone has a past that may not be pretty, and people may engage in activities that we may not appreciate? After all, that camera could be pointed towards us - who are we to judge?
I imagine it will be both.
People who need to maintain their "reputation" will need to be even more self-censoring than they were before. This will create a world(and it is already going this way) where anything you say, or do, any way you react to something, body language, facial expression, what videos you watch, books you read, music you listen to, things you post, etc will be recorded, analyzed and codified. A Police State that couldn't have been dreamed of by Orwell.
Then again, there will be those with the need for a "streecred" type of reputation will do the opposite, and perpetuate their badassness...
Eventually, there will be a corporate(Facebook) way of ranking people, which will impact us all in ways we don't even fathom.
Those who don't need to maintain their "reputation" won't need to worry about it, either because they will have absolutely no financial stake in anything(where most people will end up) or they will be so wealthy that it won't matter.
In some aspects of how human society is going, it reminds me of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", where to hide among the "converted" humans(Social Media-ized), non-converted humans had to hide their humanness.
We are also seeing how the politicization and polarization in the First World is creating a more "us vs them" reality, and we also see that geographically, people of the same class/race/political view are "self balkanizing", meaning different groups don't mingle as much anymore, never see each other, live in separated areas, etc;
And I see the left once again has that complete lack of introspection.
If you want to see obvious propaganda from NPR on topics where it is easy to see they distort the facts
Check out their calling Brad Torgessen a white supremacist last year.
When I read posts like yours, and others complaining about NPR, or "the left", SJW's, etc, what that really displays is your lack of a nuanced understanding, and a black and white world view of "us vs them".
Well, your post really sounded like it came from a streamer/podcast only media consumer, who wasn't aware of the fantastic things NPR/BBC/Community Radio has to offer.
My apologies.
There is Public Radio(NPR) that have very few ads, and fantastic quality programming.
They also play BBC content which is also great.
Then there are "community" radio stations that play all sorts of music and news programs that are great.
Perhaps you should pull your head out of the internet for a moment and take a look around at what else is out there.
They are trying to "take focus" away from ISIS and get back in the spotlight.
They know they are outdated and trying to get back up to speed in this Apps and Social driven reality.
Something you may not realize, is that because of the ubiquity of MS in the enterprise(which I also support), it makes replacing you with cheap Wipro outsourcing that much easier.
"Niche" skills with Linux(or anything besides MS) will allow you to keep your job longer.
But go ahead, keep on "doing the needful" and defending MS domination of the enterprise, and how every mom and pop shop on the planet is under their sway.
Maybe I'm just too naive to understand the MBA financial model behind all of this, but it strikes me that had Microsoft consolidated their desktop operating system into a single edition around the time of XP or 7 and stopped trying to use it as a marketing platform they would have a lot more end user good will. Why they're choosing to lose even more good will by force-feeding their marketing platform when alternatives are more prevalent than ever (linux, mac os, saas, cloud, mobile, etc etc etc) is mystifying to me.
I don't think you're being naive. MS understands their market saturation in the enterprise, and that thousands of business critical applications will run only on Windows. They are using this leverage, like a mafia don would use it to extort local business owners and maintain their monopoly.
So you are going to use amature Linux distributions, and perhaps lose out on better designed features and support, just so you can be a Hipster Anti-Corporate man?
Linux, and specifically, Desktop Linux has been around way before the current Apps/Social version of Hipsters.
And it is used primarily by people that like to have a better understanding of the OS they run, and that they can more easily change it if they desire.
Desktop Linux is a perfectly valid and preferable alternative to the garbage called Windows 10.
I would suggest you give it a try, but it seems you've already made up your mind.
The news isn't that Facebook does this or why. The news is that the Belgian police warns people about it. I'm sure that was news to you, wasn't it? So the discussion here shouldn't be so much about Facebook's bad intentions. Is the Belgian police right to warn people about Facebook?
It's amazing that you have to point this out to our astute/. posters...
Your situation is interesting, and probably a precursor of things to come.
The IoT lobby is powerful and as Millenials get older and buy homes, condos, etc they will embrace this sort of thing.
My problem with this sort of thing is the loss of privacy, the management of maintaining IoT/cloud enabled devices with security, patching, etc;
I imagine there are benefits to this tech, but the trade offs don't make it worth my time or money.
To me much of this "convenience tech" is a solution looking for a problem.
Now for someone who is disabled, things like this could be a life changer.
it doesn't fit into the boxes in your brain where you store things.
Wow, you should become a neurosurgeon, so you can rearrange all the contents in the boxes in peoples brains.
Then Amazon would really have a hit!
Get busy.
I don't think that immortality would necessarily be a good thing for humans, not as we are socio-politically right now.
Tru Dat.
The technological change we are seeing now far outpaces the level of civil discourse, and most importantly, how human beings treat each other.
Imagine someone like Donald Trump, except he never ages, lives forever, is essentially unkillable, and he's getting really, really bored as the centuries roll by; what do you think he's going to do? Don't know about you, friend, but the thought makes my blood run cold.
Its not just Trump.
Really how this will play out is those who can afford to "live forever", will.
This will be a very small group of people who will get that opportunity.
Those with that power, to see their agenda fulfilled, due to the fact that they will stick around much longer than "normal" sociopaths do, will try to shape the world as they see fit.
Just imagine if someone like J Edgar Hoover or Stalin had stayed physically and mentally healthy, much, much longer than they did.
By the time there is tech to implement a zero tolerance of driving under ANY "impairment" type substances such as alcohol or cannibas, self driving cars will have turned "driving" into a moving party.

Thats sad.

and replaced by hard men and women who punch back twice as hard when challenged
And you're that "hard man" who is going to throw the punch?
Your brown shirt bluster really is entertaining Ken, I'll give you that.
But I bet you don't even know what happened to the brown shirts.
Fury Road kicked ass.
Anybody thats hung up about what gender the "hero" is should just stop watching films and go live with ISIS... Or move to Texas.
Exactly.
This is radical fundamentalist FOMO.
They are trying to "take focus" away from ISIS and get back in the spotlight.
They know they are outdated and trying to get back up to speed in this Apps and Social driven reality.
Up next:
They are going to threaten Steve Jobs.
Not everyone lives in your ad enabled reality.
Some of us have taken the steps to ensure as little exposure to ads as possible.

The best part of your post is that you include "Straw Man" way too many times, and then infer the parent is an "illiterate sloth".
Wow.
The worst part of your post is that you apologize for MS.
Maybe I'm just too naive to understand the MBA financial model behind all of this, but it strikes me that had Microsoft consolidated their desktop operating system into a single edition around the time of XP or 7 and stopped trying to use it as a marketing platform they would have a lot more end user good will. It is reprehensible but not surprising.
It is rather disgusting that an OS has morphed into an ad delivery system.
I feel we are on the way to Idiocracy...

Is that really considered an assault? Sounds like what I'm normally doing around this time.

You could duplicate the processes and still thus lack consciousness.
Bingo
thanks to the ability to download human consciousness into computers.

The dude sitting there waiting for the stop sign to turn green is high.
The dude sitting there waiting... anywhere... is dicking with his phone.
I see this ALL THE TIME.
