I'm not sure how Europes defense spending comes into play in this...?
So basically you see DNS and ip assignment issues in a globalized world as a national security issue?
I can kind of see your point.
But It's only a matter of time until the US 'control', through ICANN/dept. of commerce, would be something better served by an international, technical group, NOT a US govt. agency.
The problem here is a technological/social one. The average net user not only doesn't know how to configure their box/connection, They don't want to know how. Thats the problem.
The attempts of the past with things like webtv, etc, were a good start in this area. I think (hope) a smart company out there will develop some kind of 'dumbed_down' internet/tv device that will be largely immune to malware, etc.
I disagree that the business drummed up malware is a good thing.
First off, I love Linux, have been using it since '99 (SuSE, RH, FC, SlackWare), still use it constantly, am part of a local Linux users group, etc;
HOWEVER, I'm sick and very tired of many posters here on/. acting as if the use of any MS product or platform is somehow a cardinal sin and an open invitation to get \cr@cked\.
Give me a freekin break. First off, I agree that Windows is less secure than Linux out of the box. But with the proper configurations and preparations (which I won't go into because we all know what they are) a WinXP box is a very useful tool and can be used safely in an internet connected world.
Yes, your typical user who buys an HP from CompUSA or where ever will most likely not know how to tighten up their box and connection. But this isn't solely MS's fault. The culture of technology we are now immersed in requires constant learning and updating of even the most mediocre of technical skills to use our devices safely and correctly. Most people in our society don't find this an _acceptable_lifestyle_.
They simply want something akin to a Television.
Turn it on and change the channels!
Until a 'safe' internet device is used by the masses, malware and its kind will continue to proliferate.
Thats why when I get home I can kick off the shoes, mix up a Martini and relax with a casual game of TFC.
Why invest my time and energy into something I have to spend hours and hours with when I can pop into CS or TFC and frag away an hour or two.
This is much more rewarding than 'running' around huge maps to collect, build and level.
I used to work with several ex-SCO people in Santa Cruz. Great people to work with. They were all hardcore Linux/and/or/BSD people who were disgusted with the direction/erection that Darl McBride and his sad, Lindon, Utah ward members had taken the company they helped build.
This suit is a joke, and I hope that Caldera gets theirs in the end.
I also will firmly place my tinfoil hat on and assume that M$ has something to do with this...
Right.
Who needs government!?!
People are basically trustworthy, right...?
We need a complete and open market system. The only thing "controlling" anything would be the market and how much $$$ you have at your disposal.
Lawlessness?!?
Simply buy your own police force
Your neighbor is dumping dioxin into the stream that runs through your property?!?
Quit complaining! This is a free market society, remember! Buy your own de-toxifier and make your neighbor pay for it with your paid for police force.
You know, I always had a hankerin' to re-live those heady days of the beginning of feudalism in 8th century Europe.
Yes, I concur wholeheartedly.
Most of our non C-Span watching posters here have no idea how the court works, or what it is...
Let alone the fact that just because a particular administration succeeds in getting their choice in the court doesn't mean that judge will rule the way they want.
"Why does this affect me?"
Hmmm..., lets see?
Can you shove your head any further into that hole in the ground?
I know, I can't believe some of the stuff I posted to Eniac while working on MK Ultra...
I actually admitted that I wasn't going to vote for Eisenhower in 52! Can you believe that?!?
I agree.
There is a cartoon at http://mnftiu.cc/ that is funny as hell in this regard. One of the characters is talking about "not being mean" to the red states and says something like:
"We've got the theory of gravity, lets not blow it"
Whats funny is there a guy I work with who looks _exactly_ like Gordon Freeman...
Yet he has no idea what Black Mesa/HL is.
I think with the ex. fusion facility in France and some of the other things that will be going on in the next 10-20 years, there will be great strides (I hope) in 'real-world' applications, such as super-conductivity and new clean energy sources.
This is an incredible time to be alive and watching the strides made by physics. Recent developments in the creation of new forms of matter, and the coming experimental fusion reactor in France make the future hopefully brighter for man and mankind.
Lets hope we don't end up with a "Black Mesa" incident...
I concur.
My wife and I were at Wal-Mart a while back, (her idea) to buy some paint and paintbrushes. While there she tried in vain to convince me to buy a 2nd tv. The Philips we have is fine and I didn't see the need for another one. But yes, they are dirt cheap at Wal-Mart.
Like someone else who is in over their head.
You know, the guy whose father was President of the United States...
I imagine if it wasn't for that kind of nepotismal influence (sp?) he would be selling used cars in Waco...
MSNBC had an article a few days ago about some oil expert saying production wouldn't peak until 2020 and that by 2007/2008 gas prices would drop dramatically due to new sources "coming online"...
br
I think I might go buy a few more hummers with news like that...
This is very interesting. I thought Japan had this in the bag. Of the two groups vying for power in this scenario, EU/Russia/China vs. US/Japan/Korea, it appears that the "non-aligned" group has won. However I imagine Japan will still have a very substantial role in this.
Points to ya man.
Never was the truth spoken more clearly.
Lucas' obviously had no idea how to induce Anakins 'switch', except for lame-ass 'dreams' and mumblings from Palp about powers...
You can't even compare LOTR and SW in the same breath...
SF films must be taken with a heavy grain of salt.
Don't try to interpret them, unless of course there is a major character in a trio of epic films who is supposed to be the "chosen one" and is chock full of consciousness lifting life forms, but he acts like one of your kid brothers crack/meth smokin sk8ter buddies whose 14 yr. old girlfriend just told him she has to break up because he won't use a condom.
Their wireless print servers won't work with "multi-function" printers of any kind. I had to get escalated up to a supervisor somewhere on the sub-continent to be informed of that delightful piece of info.
And their wireless setup utility that comes with their wireless routers is a piece of crap that doens't even find their own AP's. The one that ships with D-Link WAPs is much better, except you have to be local admin for it to work on Windows.
Yes, what a very whacked way to describe 'public' use. So that some lame-ass municipality can cry and get it's tax base. The justices that ruled in favor of this should be ashamed.
But lets not assume this is some kind of 'liberal' conspiracy to take away your summer home in the hamptons... Wal-Mart, the (ahem...) largest employer in the US, was definitely behind this and other land grabs. They are always trying to force local governments (usually not a hard thing to do...) to allow zoning changes so they can throw up one of their "always low wages" super-scenters.

I agree completely.

Blah, blah, this company will make money because of blah, blah.
What about the product?

and free markets before I puke my credit offers all over.
Remember, the Senate just passed CAFTA.
They're looking out for the little guy!

Sure they know what Fusion is:
One part Shakti,
Two parts Weather Report
Add a dash or Jean-Luc Ponty and mix well.

I always thought Opera users were weenies anyways.
