For anyone wondering, if you want * to match hidden files, do shopt -s dotglob in bash, and then you can just do rm -r * for the rest of that session. I've been bitten by rm -r .* before :)

  9. Re:No surprise... on Some Schools Ending Laptop Programs · · Score: 2, Interesting

A tablet now costs somewhere in between one to two years' worth of textbooks, so it's debatable whether it's really that much of a burden. Whether or not everyone is using laptops, it irks me that schools don't seem to care about reducing backpack load for students that would prefer soft copies. Incidentally, some of my courses have used notes that were written in-house, in LaTeX, it appears, and I'm satisfied with those. They're cheaper, much more portable, usually more understandable, since they closely mirror the course content, and I could probably convince some of the profs involved to give me a soft copy, but I haven't tried yet. So basically, I'm annoyed that schools aren't actively trying to eliminate the current burden of overpriced textbooks that get obsoleted quickly, weigh much, and often aren't that useful anyway for more than example problems.

In response to your comment, perhaps there needs to be more research about how to use tablets to facilitate learning. It doesn't seem like there's any noise coming from that direction, and there's certainly room for new ideas, like shared virtual chalkboards and such.

If you think that it's incoherent for X windows to be in a different module than the kernel, there's something that you don't get. I understand that there's a confusing amount of choice for someone who wants to develop Linux software, but there never will be some kind of "BUILT-IN" Linux(tm) windowing system, the concept just doesn't make sense. However, it is true that a unified API that eases porting between different GUI kits would be nice.

This isn't a valid argument - right now the public is bleeding money to lawyers, because of lawsuits over patents. If the patent office were made liable to pay for these damaging costs whenever they are the result of its own mistakes, then it would have an incentive to limit the amount of mistakes it makes.

In my opinion, crossplay is best handled by differentiating mouse and gamepad users into different roles that are better suited to each input type, and then balancing them to get an even playing field.
