  1. The problem is pollution, not global warming on Last Bastion For Climate Dissenters Crumbling · · Score: 1

The term "global warming" needs to go away, and the argument should be re-focused on Air Pollution as that is the real problem. People may not believe in global warming, but there's no denying bad air quality that comes from petroleum or coal based engines.

  2. What's that Blue Thing.....doing here? on Ask They Might Be Giants About Almost 30 Years of Music · · Score: 1

I'd love to hear how you guys came up with "Fingertips". Oh, and please pass the milk, please.

  3. Scratch got my 6 year old started on Learning Programming In a Post-BASIC World · · Score: 4, Informative

MIT's Scratch ( http://scratch.mit.edu/ ) has gotten my kids started with programming. It's fun, and teaches all the fundamentals necessary for learning programming logic.

  4. Eliminate Income Tax for Teachers on What Would You Do As President? · · Score: 1

Given that education is one of the few things we can do to advance our country, and that teachers get paid too little - I would eliminate income tax for all teachers in the public school system.

Yes, there would be details to sort out (give a full exemption to all? sliding scale based on performance? what about private / charter schools?) - but I'd take this step in order to help those who are in the best position to help the economic future of our country.

  5. Terrorist Goatse on Fly-by-Wireless Plane Takes to the Sky · · Score: 1

Great...now the terrorists can just run airpwn and Goatse everyone on their in-flight TV monitor. Ugh.

  6. Value yourself on Salary Negotiation for an IT Position? · · Score: 5, Insightful
A wise man once told me "if you don't value yourself, how can anyone else value you?" I've found those words to be very true on my past job searches.

Most company HR departments will validate current salary level requests. Large corporations often have hotlines dedicated to this, as the information is often required when applying for a mortgage or other financing.

It's a tough spot to be in when you are asked this question. When answering, make sure that you give a figure that represents your entire package (salary, bonus, options, perks, etc) - and let them know that you're talking about an entire package. Since bonuses are often based on variable factors, it's fair for you to factor in the upper limit of your bonus potential. The message here is be honest, but also be thorough in how you detail things. Above all, be fair to yourself.

If you're good enough and an employer really wants to hire you - they'll pay what they feel you're worth to them, as opposed to just giving you a standard "raise" from where you are.

Good luck - stay confident, negotiate tough and get what you deserve!

  7. AOL Explorer & QuickTabs on Microsoft IE 7 Goes (More) Beta · · Score: 1

Even though the average Slashdotter isn't the type who would install AOL Explorer, that browser does the best job of QuickTab like functionality. (AE calls the feature Tab Explorer)

Not only is the layout of the thumbnails a lot cooler, it also incorporates a history timeline that makes the feature much more functional than Foxpose' or QuickTabs. Using the history timeline, you can quickly jump to any page in your history in a few seconds.

Poo Poo it if you want because it's from AOL, but it's a pretty sweet implementation of this functionality.

10 bucks says Microsoft copies the history timeline feature for the IE 7 final release.

  8. Re:I hope not on Supermarket VOIP · · Score: 1

The other thing to think about here is that most people now have redundancy when it comes to phones.

We just made the jump to voip at my house. Previously, we would not have considered it - but now that my wife and I both have cell phones - the ability to make emergency calls is not really a problem. (Unless the cell phones aren't charged of course). In the event of a big disaster, it's likely that all phone service will be down so we'd be hosed anyway.

I think the two things driving the voip revolution are price and annoyance with the incumbent phone carriers.

I'll take a small quality hit to pay less money for service - and to not have to deal with the phone company.

  9. This happened on my PS2 on 360 Disc Scratching Serious Problem · · Score: 4, Interesting

I was one of those fools who waiting in line at 5 in the morning to be the first to get my hands on a PS2. I was lucky enough to procure one, and after a week of playing it - my Tekken Tag Team and SSX discs had circular scratches around them and were unplayable. I didn't move my PS2 while the drive was spinning - the machine just ate the discs.

Hopefully Microsoft will be a lot better about handling these repairs.

Initially, Sony wanted to charge me nearly 100 bucks for the privelege of them diagnosing the problem. (even though the machine was underwarantee). A few letters later, combined with multiple calls to the Better Business Bureau - Sony capitulated, repaired my PS2 and replaced my games.

The only downside is that when I got the game discs back in the mail, they all contained rootkits ;-)

  10. Real use for a #2 Pencil on Your Best Exam Stories? · · Score: 4, Interesting

My neighbor showed me this back in 8th grade - he swore by this method. Take a wooden #2 pencil, and use a razor blade to slice it in half. Tape the two halves together on one side, so the pencil can be flipped open and closed. Write out whatever kind of crib sheet you need on mailing labels (in the smallest type you can). Then stick the label inside the pencil, and use the blade to trim off any excess label margins. Bring the pencil to your exam, and when the teacher isn't looking - flip it open to consult your notes. He claims he was never busted using this method...

  11. Tijuana Tattoo on President of RIAA Says Sony-BMG Did Nothing Wrong · · Score: 1

After the Sony Rootkit incident, I'd sooner get a tattoo from Tijuana roadside vendor (using a "refurbished" needle) than buy music on a CD.

  12. Just wash your hands on A Flu Pandemic? · · Score: 1

Back in 1918, I doubt there was a lot of running water and a high availability of soap - nor were mass communication systems in place. I think an outbreak would be somewhat mitigated if people were aware and practiced sound hygenic measures. I agree with StefanJ...wash your hands and cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough!
