  1. Re:Upgrading boxes on Can Linux Pick Up Users Abandoning Win98? · · Score: 1

My entire family knows to talk to me before they get a new computer so I can help them pick one out, and transfer their data over. Then in return I get the old computer and I can either part it or set it up as a new box, runnning linux of course. Lately I've been messing around with Ubuntu and the LAMP Server install options because I've grown very intrested in that and possibly setting up a server outside my school to download stuff for me then SSH to the box and get the files I wanted. Like I watch anime that is not even released in america with fansubs and I can not get any good torrent speeds so it takes a week to get one episode and I could set it up to get the latest episode and have it done in a half hour via SSH then copy the file to my box on campus because they do not restrict any SSH traffic, I've tried it before and it worked nicely. :)

If you train with a knife and you go up against people without training in cramped quaters where they can come at you one by one you could possibly take on the entire plane. However Make it so knives are put in the luggage compartment where you can't get to them and make sure that people can't get to it. I get that people carry around pocket knives for reasons other than to hijack a plane, but does not mean they should not be able to prohibit them in the cabin. Then I guess if you don't like it you can always take a boat, bus, train, car, bike, or walk yourself.

I agree with you. Here at my college they have two Sun Labs just for the Engeneering Department, one half apple half dell lab for the Arts Departments. Then every other lab on campus is Dell. I'd say a good 1000 more dells plus there is the other secondary campus that has one lab of 200 dells. Plus all the teachers computers are dells, and they just have images for every set of hardware plus they update every lab after 3 years and they buy all the computers not just lease them. So they format the computers and sell them back to the students, professers, and community.

The point is you are spending 600 on the better of the two to get the extra features which already is a bit of cash, not including any games or extra controllers. So by the end of it you can be up to about 800 with a few games, and an extra controller. Since they offer two diffrent models, one with HMDI and one without you would expect there to be digital cables for the one that includes it as an extra 100 feature.

Last semester I had two physical classes and four online classes. I don't see the problem with this because for them it would help the students who need the video of the class to help them learn and understand it better. As for me if my classes did not require attendence then I would not show up to them because they teach this stuff right out of the book. When I hit my upper level classes I'll actually care about the subjects. Until then It's hard to care about it if I don't like it and if I don't have to I won't go to class.

I'm not saying I'm great at using linux, but I know a bit of info to help me get around and have fun. with that out of the way I shall express my point...

I used to use debain, it is great, I still remember when I said I will not go to anything other than debian. Then Ubuntu came around and I tried that out and loved it too. For the longest time I ran dual boot debian and ubuntu. Then one day I decided to give up debian because I noticed the fact that I was not booting into it anymore. I now run two computers one windows one ubuntu LAMP server install, no gui. Its a box to play around with and test stuff out. And as soon as I can get my windows box out of the way I'll have ubuntu on that too for my desktop. I love the debian packagmanager system, that is why I never wanted to go to anything other than that. I've compiled stuff by sources before and it sucks. apt-get is so much better and ubuntu has that which I love. To me ubuntu is debian with the desktop feel that I wanted for my main desktop machine, without the hassle I had in debian.

I only use windows because of software that I have to have for school, I"m in college right now and as a network admin and software development dual major I need certian software they want me to use, like VB.net stuff so I have windows because I can never get wine to work.

  11. Re:Passing the buck on India Rejects One Laptop per Child Program · · Score: 0

I don't know weather or not laptops help the students, however I do know that if a child wants to learn and engages him or her self in the studies then they learn better. I did, a lot of is was because of my parents, mainly my mom, who pushed me to do the best I could in school. So they should try and engage the kids in school before they hand out laptops, and get the parents to push their kids to do well in school too then we would see a great change. Until then the kids who are not pushed to do their best will not use the computers to help themselves and the students who do push themselves to do the best they will use the computers to help themselves learn better, more and faster in school. And those are the ones who graduate from college and persue their dreams instead of working in a dead end factory job in the middle of nowhere...

But I don't see a major campagin to get kids involved in scool and learning so the chance of that happening is slim to none. I for one am glad I had parents like mine who wanted me to do better than what they did. Netier of them got anything above a high school education and they taught me that you have to work hard and learn in school. Maybe that is decent parenting, maybe its just being smart parents, or maybe they want to live off of me when they get old... Who knows, but I'm glad they pushed me and I would love to see more parents push their children to do their best and learn everything they can.

I was falling behind in my math, probably because I was never motivated in High School to learn, mine, my parents, and the schools fault. Then with that I figured why take all the math. I was looking at 7 or 8 semesters of math and I could not get through the first semester. I now am taking Network Admin. and Software development, each their own Associates degree, then I'm gonna finish out with the Indvidualized program, I'll take a few CS courses, but the math is staying out of it.

Ok, so if the controller is not supposed to influce the game then I should be able to hook a NES/SNES controller up to a PS2 and play every game. I don't think that could happen. There are much more buttons to allow the game to grow and have more complex items be used. Such as the Dual Shock Analog sticks, the allowed you to move more fluidly around an enviorment and control the camera with out having it jerk around from a D-pad. I have to disagree with this whole concept of a controler should not influnce a game. It does, and it will. When we obtain a controller that is better than the rest, or we have new things on them (sholder buttons for SNES, Analog/digatal joysticks N64/PS) we can do new things. Would Katamari be playable with out the Dual Shock analog sticks? No. So untill then it will be influnced by the controler.

Ya, I really have to agree with you there, Microsoft may get lots of crap from people, but they do have so much breathing room. They are shipping delays on products, shipping new retails of old software, ME anyone?, and they constantly release patches. I know linux in general has patches, however a lot of the patches are for software and not for the OS itself. Where as with windows it is all wrapped up into one so you have to update all. If I only use gnome, I don't need the newest patch for KDE stuff, and if I don't use that comes standard with I don't need the update for that. However if I don't update IE I can still be at risk because if I get some peice of software that expolits the hole then well I'm screwed. So they do get a lot of breathing room.
