Wow, i am in my mid-30s and I never saw this guy and only heard of him via TV show jokes etc. I thought he was dead. Go figure... sounds like a lot of you really loved him. May have to pick up his DVDs at some point.
While true alternate downloads mechanisms exist, how many people in the public have access to pirate FTP sites? Bittorrent brought illegal downloading of movies to the masses. Before bittorrent most people had no idea where or how to download movies on the internet.
I believe your analogy of a "washing machine" while on the surface seems accurate, with further thought it is not really a great analogy for software subscription models. The washing machine company does not provide both the machine and the means to use the washing machine (in your example, electricity). The power company provides the electricity -- thus not a monopoly on the ability to use the machine.
Going one step further with your example, you would imply that I would think detergent should be included with the machine. However, you forget something. I have a choice of what detergent I want to purchase available from multiple suppliers. I can choose detergents that are cheap, expensive, low quality, high quality, or none at all -- no matter, my washing machine still works. However, without the online component, I believe this game would not work.
To me it seems the software should be free if you pay a monthly fee to use the software -- as it is for most software by subscription. Or if you pay for the software, the subscription should be included. Anything else is just trying to double-dip IMHO. It is a slippery slope, before long all vendors will require monthly fees for any type of multi-player game no matter where it is "hosted."
Do you think that all game makers will ultimately start requiring purchase of both the online software and then a (IMHO ridiculous) monthly fee to play an online game?
Other than nerds, who cares about this feature in Firefox?
Wouldn't it be better to work on making Firefox faster, smaller memory footprint, and a safer web browser (serious investigation in JavaScript vulnerabilities etc) compared to IE?
Nerds/programmers might love this, but otherwise I don't get what this does to better the Firefox experience for normal users...
So instead of having a nice simple bookmarks.html file it is all in some places.sqlite file. A few questions/observations.
1) If this is correct, disappointing that the devs called the bookmarks file places.sqlite instead of bookmarks.sqlite so people know where the bookmarks are if you want to move them. Am I correct?
2) Is this new file now no longer human readable the way bookmarks.html?
3) Someone please tell me how this makes my life better as a normal Firefox user? Sure sounds like change for change sake to me...
I find that single player games just can't provide an AI experience compared to playing against real humans. It's annoying that I can tell once I cross a certain threshold/doorway in the game, all of a sudden I get attacked. Then when I back up, the attack stops. The WORST of this was Call of Duty 2. WoW! I remember so vividly in the first 10 minutes of the game (I removed it at 15 minuted) I would move forward 1 inch, and the guns all fired at me, I backed up 1 inch and they stopped!
until AI is truely AI and not just triggered effects/responses, multiplayer is all I like to play in FPS games nowadays.
I can't ignore this comment as it seems Slashdot keeps perpetuating this myth...
Why do people keep perpetuating this misnomer?? If you don't use Aero and instead switch to Windows Classic Appearance, Vista works great on a wide variety of machines.
Now, if you had said it as below you would have had a point:
"No thanks. I'd like to be able to use my computer without needing five top-of-the-line graphics cards just to run the OS in 'fancy graphics' mode.
I know you are trying to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll troll, but is that the best you can do? This has got to be one of the lamest troll comments in a while on slashdot...
Actually, yes I have. So if needed a specific item, just buy it. A couple hundred is nothing...
Just saying it is not a lot of money in the scheme of things for a business license. That's all...
If you are a corporate customer, the price tag is nothing for a copy of Vista Business. So corporate customers are not going to have a problem.
For a non-corporate user thinking of a switch to Mac but is scared of needing an occassional Windows application, the extra expense might dissuade from a switch attempt.
Exactly, I don't like the whole profiling mechanism design. It takes me too much time to figure it out each time I try Thunderbird again. At this point I recently moved to Gmail and I am surprised how much I like the design and labels! SHOCKED actually....
The format I am importing is (yes I am embarrassed!:) ) is Outlook Express email.
Big risk at being modded down, but I have to say it...
I have tried MANY times to use Thunderbird. Every time it fails for some weird quirk or another. The profile mechanism just doesn't work properly. It never stores the profile where i want without a whole bunch of fussing with a special start of Thunderbird (thunderbird -profile or something). Then, when I migrate my email into Thunderbird, it just cant handle huge volumes RELIABLY each time I have tried. Sometimes it imports, but invariably it fails afterwards in terms of speed or just disappearing the inbox -- which leads to the oh so helpful fix people point to about restoring the profiles.
So I am glad he has his opinions on email. But with all the issues with Thunderbird I think he should try to make that application must easier to manage (note, I didn't say "use") and less time on interviews IMHO.
Oh, and please don't reply with "Oh, I have a 10k message inbox and it works fine for me." I know, many of you have no problems but if you google thunderbird you will see my own experience is not rare.
If you are commenting about the fear of conflicts due to rude behavior, the AirFones are fine because no one uses them. I may have seen this phone used 1-2 times in the last 10 years. The fact is they are HUGELY expensive so people either don't use the service or use it for 2-3 minutes at most.
Now, compare that with a plane full of people with cell phones that have cheap plans where they can gab on for hours and, with power adapters, the phone can last the entire flight. Awful right? Even the nicest person would be hard-pressed to not start telling the person to hang the damn thing up.
I already see this on Amtrak between Boston and NYC. People gab loudly and for HOURS. Amtrak had to make a QUIET CAR because the amount of noise had gotten so awful due to impolite cell users.
Way to think about the environment!
Nope, that won't turn it off. Safari just lets you lower the amount of anti-aliasing. Why is text so darn blurry in Safari for windows?

Seriously, problem solved. Why wouldn't you want your own bathroom? It's worth the extra $.
Great! Well, problem solved. We can all stop patching our servers and running firewalls now! Yippee!! :D

Wow, I can't believe your post was not modded up! Geesh, people really don't read anymore! No self-respecting nerd/geek should miss this reference to the classic http://www.amazon.com/Fahrenheit-451-Ray-Bradbury/ dp/0345342968/

Yes, it only runs Aero if your graphics card can support the interface.
Yes, I have, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misnomer . Have you?
A misnomer is a term which suggests an interpretation known not to be true.
I can't ignore this comment as it seems Slashdot keeps perpetuating this myth...

Put some effort into it at least! Let me get you started with a helpful guide to trolling http://www.urban75.com/Mag/troll.html

Depends on how you look at it.

Win win if you ask me...
Doesn't google for domains (Google Apps) allow for exactly this type of thing....?
Uh, turn off all the cutesy graphics and Vista would be fine. Windows classic theme removes all the GUI candy and the 950 is fine...
