I don't really know if i can advocate using Open Office in schools. Granted, its a great idea in theory (especially when you do a cost analysis), but this is a Windows world. If school children start with OpenOffice and are forced to learn the MS component, quite a lot of money will be spent reteaching them.

Great article, and a good read. I'm a pretty huge OS proponent myself, but when reading this, one must take into consideration that Wired pours TONS of money into supporting the open source movement. Their reporting may be just a little biased as a result.

I can understand and empathize with your concerns, and as someone who has not yet seen the film, its hard for me to make a firm assesment, but I think that HHG2G has a lot of potential. Just as they told you in highschool, the movie should never replace the original text, however, it'll be interesting to see the way that others (e.g. the director) interpreted this classic series of novels. Such being said, yes, the writing style is one of my favorite parts of reading douglass adams. Do i expect for most of it to be translated onto film, eh, maybe, maybe not. But i'm trying to go into this w/ open arms and no expectations.

Well, I didn't read the whole article, but its amazing how true this guy is. I have tons of friends that work in PR who tell me all the time how the influence the media and people's perceptions of the world. The ironic part is how the "business" world has had the tendency to shut them out of their exclusive, black suit wearing clique. People often underestimate the fact that quite a few PR firms take on a lot of pro-bono work as well. So many start ups could not have well, started up, without their help. its a double edged sword.

I've been trying to introduce Firefox to as many people as possible, but the fact of the matter is that to get people to change, you're going to have to teach them that there is a world outside of Microsoft. As far as blockbuster is considered, i hope that netflix gives them a run for their buck. especially after that "no late fees" scam that they tried to pull on everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if the bad buzz about them resulting from this little stunt put a serious dent in thier earnings. Its been a fun and interesting road, watching Amazon grow over the past several years -- here's to a great partnership w/ netflix.

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to disagree. I do like the idea of city/state run internet. Granted, I will probably end up staying w/ my private ISP, but at least having the option is a good idea. There are so many households within the US that do not have internet access because it is either a) too expensive or b) not a part of their live. Providing state/city run internet would provide the foundation to start an education initiative nationwide. Given the restrictions that the government will probably impose upon its national internet service, many will probably chose to stay with their private ISPs, but at least having that option available, would be a nice alternative. I know a number of students that would rejoice at not having to pay for broadband.
