What keeps a band of hobbyists from flocking under a single, but loose cooperative? You split the cost of the $100 certificate and publish under a single entity? Now the barrier to entry is a few bucks, or a few cents.
Agreed. I think the tension between the two camps is a healthy balancing act. I think it a sign of an organization that is maturing into what we all hoped it would become.
'cause I hadn't watched it in a long time, but Ian says something interesting: Life will always find a way. Meaning, there will always be a tension between our genes trying to evolve out of disease, and the disease out-evolving our adaptations by employing its own. I hate to sound cynical, but even if this were a cure, HIV will find another way or be supplanted by another disease more powerful.
Too true; thank you for the correction. That detail had escaped me until immediately after submitting the button.
Slashdot Editors: Comment revisioning and *history* would be a pretty neat feature for little details like this. I know I should be more careful (hey, that's what the preview is button for right?), but as I said, it would be nice. You can escape the abuse by depicting a revision history.
Major, it seems to me (and others at/.) that the cultures that most geeks espouse run counter to the perceptions of the military. This being, for example, showing up at a consistent designated hour, opposition to wearing a standard uniform, having an overly strict form of discipline, etc.
How do you propose to reconcile those conflicts and establish your organization with any semblance of 'geek cred' to get the real talent you sound interested in attracting? What sorts of 'carrots' will you wave to attract people?
I don't know that they had a choice for the same reason.
Consumer: If I go with PS3, I get the next generation of digital video players as well. Consumer: If I go with XBOX I get none. MSFT: If we don't offer a solution to include consumers in the next generation of digital video players, they may go with our competition. MSFT: If we go with Blu-Ray, we may give the impression that XBOX is somehow inferior to the PS3 which inherently comes Blu-Ray equipped. Thus, we will go with HD-DVD.
The Force and Star Wars. Is it too much to hope for that/. will someday stop putting out stuff written for adolescent mentalities and tastes? Probably so, since it's getting worse instead of better. Or maybe its because when we joined/. that we were (and likely still are) adolescents with mentalities and tastes?
With our first PC, my father installed Direct Access. It was a nice piece of software for trying to keep your kids from dorking things up intentionally/unintentionally and naturally I thought computers were pretty interesting, so I spent a lot of time just watching him do things.
Well, I saw him installing this software and shoulder surfed his passwords (though I didn't call by that, it was just 'being clever'). Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to keep this tidbit of information to myself, but how could I? He chose my middle name for it! It was such an honor to be the master password.
Later, I would find out that he used his middle name instead. So much for 'being clever'.
It's all based on your point of view. They see it as theft because pirates are depriving them of money that would otherwise have been in their pockets from the result of a sale.
The error in this assumption, which the MPAA suffers from as well, is that all other things being equal, a pirate likely would not have payed for the copyrighted work *anyway*, even if the work was not available to 'steal'! That's what is ridiculous about the whole affair.
That one is soooooo overated. This one applies much better:
At the prospect of being cutoff from the Pirate Bay, "A million voices suddenly cry out in terror and were suddenly silenced" as they made a simple DNS change and went about their business.
With all due respect Mr. Atheist, I am a Christian and am offended that they should dictate to me what I can and can't see. I demand that that they stop bothering Wikipedia, because it shows a total lack of respect to *all* who do not hold the beliefs and ideals of their faith.
Besides, if all I see are political cartoons depicting him, what else should I think of him?
The U.S. democracy (or, I should say, democratic republic) only got started because the people at the time didn't want a monarchy or the like and would not have immediately voted to change it back I don't disagree with you, but they also had an ocean separating them. Where do those who want democracy go to put a buffer between them and their oppressors? We see that those who try to escape quickly have a wall put up around them.
Have we really done anything good by raiding Afghanistan and toppling its government? Iraq? Have we improved their situation? Some would argue either way. I'm not entirely certain, myself. But have we given them an opportunity to change for themselves? I think so.
What's unfortunate is that they don't have a Thomas Jefferson Al Mohamed riding up on a camel to bring everyone together under a unified government. It's unfortunate that there are a lot of external forces that lay in wait, preying upon the innocent to cause the miscarriage of a fledgling government in both nations.
But enough of the past.
Where are we going into the future? It took us more than 11 years from the day we declared independence until we could eradicate the enemy, sit down together, and all put our John Hancock's on the Constitution. Should we expect anything less from Afghanistan? Iraq? They're still dealing with the enemy, let alone any internal bickering from their own countrymen. As you allude to, they need time. We need to give them time. We need to give them the chance to want some form of democracy. We've given them their opportunity.
And if they reject that, fine. But they chose to reject it, not because of oppression, but because they refused to act and rise to the challenge.
One of the glaring features missing from Picasa is the ability to tag. I have GBs of photos and to even use Picasa for my home (non-web) use, the inability to tag is pathetic, at best. I have taken a look at Adobe Photo Album 3.2. The UI seems easy enough for the wife to use, my only concern being that it only works on Windows and should I decide to leap to the Mac platform when XP isn't viable for my wife's use, I can't take that database with me because it is a Windows only application.
Anyone know of any user friendly, non-web, multi-platform tagging software?
Care to site your sources for that information? That's well and fine if it's true, but help us differentiate between reality and what you claim it to be.
That was my first thought. They can have the portal, the ad business, but PLEASE! excise Flickr from the deal...I'm kinda sorta glad that I haven't based my photo collection with them, but their service has been really nice for sharing photos with other people. Guess it's time to go some other place to host my photos...
They do this at the SLC International Airport. The airport is prone to getting thick fog in the winter time, so they will seed the clouds to cause the moisture in the air to bind, causing a very light drizzle instead of blanketing the area with thick fog. It's not perfect at all, but for intents and purposes, it works wonderfully.
No way, CAMELS with frickin' lasers!

...but AT&T doesn't offer static IP addresses on Uverse...Ever heard of Dynamic DNS?
I use FreeDNS and find it be reliable and easy to use. Disclaimer: I have no financial or other interest in the site except that I find it useful.
Security by obscurity has never been a wise choice as a single line of defense.

Oh, the good ol' days of AOL dial-up:
One sunny day, arrived in the mail,
500 free hours from AOL!
Twas looking for fun
But then for my gun
When the line busy and thus it failed.
