They don't really do this anymore, Best Buy around here used to charge $30 for a new release the day it was released. I bought both unreal tournament 2k4 special edition and battlefield vietnam for $30 each this way.

And I agree, there are games that I wouldn't have played if it weren't for a relative buying it for me. The original fallout was one of those games for me.

I totally agree with the part you said about the lack of original settings. However, I don't see why you have to include things such as "WHY IS THIS SHIT ALWAYS THE FUCKING SAME?" in order to make your point. Must be an AC thing...

I dealt with the slowness of the aurora toolset with large modules by breaking my modules into seperate chapters, making sure that chapters stayed small enough that the toolset did not slow down too much.

Its limiting becuase you can basically only have your adventurers explore a small portion of your entire landmass at a time, but its a work around none-the-less.

Seriously, in my area you can get internet access through comcast or sbc. We use DSL at work and it is significantly slower and fails more often than comcast. My complaint is that there are no choices for reliable cable internet. There is only comcast.

"...it essentially makes all channels pay channels."

And this is bad thing how? I pay roughly $75.00 a month for comcast cable + internet. And this will go up even more after their "deal" period ends. I only watch 3 other channels besides the locals (and with that I only watch Lost on ABC). The pricing as it is right now is absolutely ridiculous.

Many people say that its an opt in service as it is, so if you don't like it don't sign up for it. But, if you sign up for the internet access without the cable tv, they really jack up the rate for internet because of it. So comcast is basically saying "yeah, opt out of cable tv, but we're still going to get yoru money one way or another." Its a lose lose situation for the consumer.

I, for one, really hope this al a carte thing really comes into play soon.

I agree, I recently perused the current selection of lego sets and I definately noticed the lack of creative potential in the sets. I remember sets had included specialized pieces in the past, but even these were open ended enough to be used for a variety of purposes (for example, tiny plastic antennaes included with space sets that could be used for space stations, or radio towers in a town building, etc).

What would you use the front windsheild piece on the TIE fighter model for other than a tie fighter? I guess you can be creative with it, but it will always make any spaceship built with it look like a TIE fighter knock-off.

The article mentions that children are giving up traditional toys for video game at an earlier age. This is a sad state of affairs, and I feel that it will result in a less creative and less intelligent generation. When I was growing up, I had 8-bit nintendo, I had computer games, and I enjoyed them. But I also highly valued my time playing with lego and erector sets. These promoted creative, math, and engineering type skills. My point is that I had access to both mediums, and I chose to split my time between the two. I wonder what else is making children less inclined to play with traditional toys and more attracted to the "idiot box" as my mother used to call the Nintendo.

Statistics can say anything, and the unemployment rate is one of them. That college grad working the counter at McD's is counted in that 96.2% of the employed in your area, even though he should be making more money doing something in his field. It counts you as employed if you work part time, even though you need full time work. It also counts you as employed if you are working a job you are totally overqualified for and are making a sub-par wage given your skills.

So, in short, unemployment rate is not a very good indicator of economic prosperity.

Yeah thats really smart. Make gas $6 a gallon so people already hurt by the poor economy the US is experiencing can be hurt even more. For the record, I am very environmentally minded, but the fact is that people will drive no matter what the price is. We pay around $2.50 avg around the country (not an exact figure, just estimating for sake of argument) and no one takes the bus to work. The main problem is that in many US cities there is no choice but to drive everywhere. Public transportation is seriously lacking, and I feel that should be top priority in any large metropolitan area. Make public transportation easy, cheap, and readily available, and people will gladly use it instead of paying high gas prices.

And besides, we're going to run out of oil in the next 100 years anyway, and the earth will balance itself out and go back to equilibrium, and everyone will be happy (except for the oil companaies).

Yes, this is all true, but you totally missed my point. Right now, the market is dominated by the old system - the "gotta be signed by a record label in order to get marketing and sell my cd's at best buy" system. I am being totally hypothetical. My claim is for the theoretical system where the RIAA is cut out, and bands promote themselves, placing them all on an equal playing field.

  19. Re:The "Flexible" Elevator - Going Up? on Apple iTunes to End Flat Fee Pricing? · · Score: 1

No one would even need to press a cd in batches of 5,000 if music became all digital. The old model is buying pre-recorded music off of the shelf. The new digital model the GP was referring to is the band creating a website, hosting it, and charging $0.25 a song download (or even givign it away for free and make money selling merchandise or concert tickets). Therefore, the music store is obsolete (or can be used just for selling branded merchandise).

Imagine if the music version of slashdot existed (it may already, I don't know). Bands could post links to their new releases, users can comment on the songs / bands, and the best bands will gain the largest following.

Of course, a band would need some kind of manager to set up concert dates and reserve venues, but thats about it. The band would start small, but as they gain success they can reinvest their earned money for things such as more adverstising and what not.

of course, I am not in the music industry so I have only a small idea on how these things work, so take my modest opinions with a grain of salt. But it seems like this all digital model would make a lot of media companies obsolete as well.

IF this is true, its just sad. MMO's are just dumb and mindless for the most part. Its not that they aren't fun for a quick fix of gaming pleasure, but to really be competitive in the game you have to put hours and hours of grind into your character. Click on things, kill things, get experience, sell your stuff on ebay. Table top games are fun because you actually get together with your friends in meatspace, you get the interaction, and you work the mind by imagining your surroundings and trying to figure out problems as a group. Maybe this is why the current generation seems to be lacking in basic problem solving skills

I valued my time playing table top games all night long either at the local game store or at someone's house. I think its sad that this is something my future children may not get to experience.
