We are so famous about our ecological profile and we suck so much at this at the same time. And when another plant fails I have to pay for the cleanup. Think of it: Nuclear plant do not need insurance, because if they would need one they would not be affordable. In the end nuclear power is not cheap you just have to pay for its cost through your taxes.

In that light the cost for sustainable energy systems is acceptable. It only means we need to be more energy efficient. And this is possible. The USA produce 19 t CO2 per person per capita [http://www.myclimatechange.net/default.aspx?cat=2&sub=4&subjectId=52] while Germany produces 10 t CO2 per capita or Canada 15 t CO2 per capita. And as these two other countries are similar in wealth they can easily be used for comparison. When the US would go from 19 t to 15 t or 10 t of CO2 than they would save a lot of money.

And beside that, nuclear energy is also limited by resources. Renewable energy is only limited by the sun (which is going to work for another billion years before we have to relocate).

$50 million is not that much. In Germany the investment in offshore wind energy in 2008 was € 25 000 million (approx $ 36 000 million). And Germany is only a small country and is not at the forefront of wind energy deployment. However, in Germany the owner of wind turbines get 9 cent per kWh at the beginning and 5 cent per kWh later as a guaranteed price for their electricity and if possible other plants have to reduce their output so that the electricity from renewable sources is consumed first. However, big coal, oil and nuclear plants cannot be stopped on short notice therefore wind turbines have to be stopped on occasion as there is not enough energy storage for the electricity overproduction.

We could repeat the same thing for Denmark another even smaller country or the Netherlands. They all have bigger budgets. Germany puts € 25 billions into offshore research. This includes building offshore plants. Sometimes I wonder why the US is loosing ground on civil technologies.

50 million is a joke not an investment.
