Since that time in the state of Minnesota almost every major retail store such as Target now requires you to get cold and sinus medicines from the Pharmacist. You have to show ID, and sign your name in a log book for each item you purchase. This is entirely vouluntary and designed to make it a little harder for people to steal and purchase large amounts of the materials to manufacture Meth. I appluad thier measures and their security.
If it was indeed large quantities of pseudophedrine being stolen from pharmacies to produce meth why make the legit people show ID to a pharmacist to purchase their cold remedy? Seriously, last time I went to Walgreens, it took almost a half hour standing at the pharmacist counter to purchase my sinus med and then guess what, I can only buy a small ammount so since I have chronic sinusitis, I will have to spend a half hour a week sitting in line to purchase what I need. This is regardless of the fact that I had to show ID, and sign for this shit.
Nor do I appreciate my neighbor calling Chemlawn and dispensing cancer causing chemicals where pets and children play and which will leach into the groundwater. This is a much larger risk but how many people use these services to keep their lawns green?
Yes. If you commit a crime, you should go to prison. I object to having prisons known for anal sex, and I object to prisoners being given special treatment based on being rich. So perhaps speeders should go to prison? Jaywalkers? No matter what the crime we should send them all to Oz?
Ah right. So they break the law in order to steal/defraud money, but punishing them is out of the question. We save prisons for those evil people that grow pot in their backyard for personal use. Those people don't belong in prison either but according to your view since they are criminals they belong in a maximum security prison. What? A hundred million dollar fine isn't punishment? Then neither is the 100$ speeding ticket.
Could you explain to me how it is unfair to fine those that have the means to pay for the costs of their trial and incarceration? Why wouldn't you want them to pay for the costs necessary?
Oh I think it would be quite fair for criminals to pay for their imprisonment when their crime necessitates imprisonment. Question: What will you do with those who cannot or simply won't pay? Death penalty perhaps?
I was merely saying that L.E.'s crime and many other crimes do not warrent jail time. It's just stupid and the punishment doesn't fit the crime.
Pay yes, jailtime no. I don't have knowledge of the case facts other than he knew the hit was coming and sold. I looked at the stock values... In 2001 the stock took a 10$ hit (~30%), it would've happened anyway regardless of him selling or not.
First, the stock wasn't valueless afterward, nor is it now. Down perhaps but not worthless.
Second, The burglar sitting in jail isn't likely to have 100M to donate to charity as a deterrent. Most likely all that that person has is time to take away. If you could somehow force them to make monetary restitution + an additional penalty fee then yes I would prefer that. Justice does have a price... Something about "Eye for an eye...", no not literaly, it's what our justice system was modeled after.
Then don't put him in a Hilton.
But that's where he'll end up, like it or not, just like Martha Stewart. Are you going to tell me that they deserve to be in a maximum security prison with violent criminals? Of course not, they don't even belong in prison. It's just stupid.
Sure. Of course, the $100,000,000 fine could be paid to the government to offset those high prices at the Hilton they are putting him up at.
That is neither fair nor wise.
I don't see how having Mr. Ellison sit in some cozy Hilton with a fence is in any way justice to those who have been wronged. He didn't "rob" anyone. He sold some stock he knew would probably drop. I somehow think that any one of us faced with a similar situation would probably do exactly the same thing. He didn't cause the stock to drop, the earnings shortfall did that. Sounds like a suitable punishment to me (if indeed it could actually be called a crime).
Let me get this straight, you truly believe that having Joe Taxpayer (including many shareholders) pay to keep Ellison at the crossbar motel sounds like justice?
You DO have a choice. Internet access is NOT a necessity nor a right. I choose not to have local phone service at my house, nor satellite TV / Cable, nor any form of internet access other than my crappy Nextel webbrowser. I don't deserve free access nor does anyone else.
While the cost of housing in small towns is certainly less than that of large cities you are not likely to find any family dwellings for anywhere close to 30K barring re-hab / foreclosures. I would venture to say that even in the lowest cost areas a modestly sized 3br/2ba will set you back 70K minimum. Anything approaching new and a bit better equipped closer to 100K or better. So while you don't have to pay them 80K a year it sure would be nice and allow them to live comfortably while possibly saving for the future.
Purchase X10 controlled outlets and install them where the offending devices are located and then use your uber-geek skills to program simple timers to shut off these devices during times of non-use. I actually do this for my stereo and it works rather well.
This may have been true in the past but reductions of sulfur levels in today's fuels and even further reductions in the future (15ppm by 2007) are making diesels very clean. 2007 Federal Standards in the US will virtually eliminate emissions from new diesels reducing particulate and nitrogen oxides by 98% from 1988 emissions levels.
And you can watch scenes of "Indigenous Nudity" while violent tribesmen beat the living fuck out of each other with long sticks because that is "Science".
All of these devices (pvp's, the rumored ipod video) seem to me to scream for those little video screens that fold down in front of your eye. Something like this http://www.mp3playerstore.com/stuff_you_need/speci al/i-glasses.htm but a little less butt-ugly and perhaps only one screen in front of one eye allowing you to keep the other on your surroundings. I found some at www.eyetop.net but at 500$ it's no wonder nobody is using them. Aren't there any cheaper decent solutions?
Sure, if the children can actually read (they're old enough) well enough to not interrupt said driver every 30 seconds with "What does this spell?". There are always other things to do besides watch TV but sometimes a well chosen video quiets them down long enough to maintain the driver's sanity untill the next stop. I would say that a video player in the car is far better than one in the house.

1. Give away a basic, lo-kbps, non-guaranteed QOS for everyone. Make all those who think that net access is some right happy enough.
2. Offer better packages to those who need / want better service.
3. Profit

So now we can have "Enlarge your P3nis to 10 qubits" spam?
A joke perhaps, but not a funny joke. Not a troll, but definatly not +1 funny.

I use telnet and render the HTML mentally.

If you were to copy a sony CD 1,000's of times and sell it how would you be fined if convicted?

If spelling it out aloud it would be yud-kay-vav-kay.
Well why wont that homeless guy with the sign reading "Will work for food" read that other sign that says "HELP WANTED"?
Southpark already did ... Oh wait that was "An Elephant Makes Love To a Pig"
Just make sure you get a washable cover for your ipod so when your friends "borrow" it to toy around you can clean it easily.
And you can watch scenes of "Indigenous Nudity" while violent tribesmen beat the living fuck out of each other with long sticks because that is "Science".
While the child may be too young to enjoy every bit of the trip, that shouldn't stop the parents from enjoying themselves.
