For me it's not that they are slow, or big, or irrelevant (although this is true). It's the fact that I simply am not going to buy whatever product the ad is selling. I am far more likely going to purchase a product that I have had excellent word-of-mouth advertising from and from a site that I have heard good things about. I do not want to see the pretty graphics.
I generally avoid commercial television because of the ads and I have not found a show that will hold my attention long enough to make me go through the effort of flipping back after the ad is over. TV shows are crap, If I want to watch one in particular I will download it, burn it on DVD and pop it in my player sans commercials.

Perhaps you have misunderstood? Rate plans work very similar here for example... When gettng new service from Carrier A you have the option of contract length. 2 years might get you a 299.00 phone for 99.00 1 year would get the same phone for 199.00 and obviously no contract you would pay full price. I also believe that certain rate plans are only available if you choose a certain contract length. I pay $90 for 800 outgoing, vm, caller id, detailed billing, and whatever other useless features are included. I do get free incomming calls which is not universal but becomming more common. All together I use approxomatly 2500 minutes a month but never exceed my plan minutes. However with taxes, insurance, misc fees I end up paying about 105 dollars.

  4. Re:Length of Contract on Massachusetts Plans a Cell Phone Bill of Rights · · Score: 0

Length of contract depends on what pricing level you want. Usually 2 years for the best deals and 1 year for middle of the road. Bills are complicated by different surcharges, taxes, recovery fees, insurance, and others. Most often listed in a manner that is not easy to understand for many.

  6. Wonderful, now can they just play the movie? on No Region Codes for HD-DVD? · · Score: 0, Troll

One of the reasons I choose to back up my movies onto DVD+R is that I do not have to wait for what on many brands are endless previews. It's bad enough to have to pay 20+ dollars for mostly shit movies but to then be subjected to 10 minutes or more of commercials and previews that are sometimes not easily skipped is ridiculous. Add to that some of the more ridiculous menu systems on some movies and it can take what seems like an eternity sometimes just to simply pop a movie in to fall asleep to. They have 2 sided capability, how about simply playing the freaking movie on on side while saving all of the fancy menu bullshit for side-B. If I cannot make it easy by just copying the movie alone to a playable format I simply wont bother with most movies.

I have often wondered just how far gold is going to get you when disaster strikes. I can think of far more valuable items such as ammunition, knives, food, cigarettes even but how many people are going to (until some kind of civilized order is restored anyways) trade valuable food for some worthless shiny metal? Gold you can live without. A decent rifle with plenty of ammo would be indispensable and worth more than all the gold in the world.

Sure it will be free to mom and pop, whose documents will be linked and stored with their gmail account. Then again mom and pop aren't really concerned with high-security / data protection so all they really need is the free access. All they care about is the fact that they don't have to pay MS $$$ to keep their not-so-frequently used office suite up to date.
I can also see Google selling pre-configured boxes, just like the yellow and blue search boxes. Their data will be auto-magically be indexed upon creation / update. Not everyone is like the slashdot crowd. It doesn't take mass adoption to earn Google some $$$$.

My first concern is that once given away, a very poor family might look towards selling the laptop on the black market for food, clothing, etc. How much expense would be added if biometrics were incorporated into the design so that once a laptop is "mated" to a child, only that child can operate it, thus rendering its worth on the black market so much less?

Well then they would just have to sell (in part or whole) their child right along with the laptop. Either that or the warlords will just steal them all and sell them to the geeks on ebay who will then promptly hack them to disable the biometric requirement while at the same time adding biometric entrance to their parents basement doors.
