    Those sorts of contracts should be done in a phased rollout where they pay a bit then roll out some stuff and test it and then pay for it. There's no reason to be locked in for millions for a system that doesn't work.

    There have been too many times that the system has hung with the "working on it spinner" still spinning away merrily.

    Show me actual information. Show me how many bytes have been downloaded, or which file has been installed. Show me something that proves that the system is doing something useful rather than busy-looping doing nothing.

    Just be clear about what's going on. When downloading a package, indicate which package you're downloading, how much of it has been downloaded and the total size, as well as how many more packages there are to download.

    If you don't know how much longer something is going to take, then don't give me a "x minutes remaining" estimate. Just show me what is currently going on so I can see that *something* is happening.

    You'll need to change your computer, OS, ISP, web browser, IP address, email address, credit card number, paypal account, facebook account, geographic location, etc. as well, otherwise the marketing companies will just use that stuff to match the new name against the old one in their database.

    I've been working primarily on embedded Linux development for the last decade. I'm pretty good at it. But it's been a very long time since I've done any coding for Windows, and I haven't done web development since the days of hand-coding HTML in a text editor.

    So if you want a generalist, I'm not your best choice. If you want to optimize linux for 99.999% uptime while efficiently routing 10-gigabit traffic through multiple virtual machines with the ability to patch in a fix while the machine is still running, then I'm your guy.

    I bought a bottom-end vostro laptop for personal use, but since it's a "business" computer it had next-business-day warranty.

    Sure enough, I had a little keyboard glitch and called it in and they overnighted a new keyboard to my city and the next day a tech showed up to install it. It was pretty sweet.

    He needs to control his brand, and to own it outright. Thus, he benefits not only from having ownership, but having his legal right made clear.

    Of course he benefits from having ownership...but that doesn't necessarily give him the right to take it away from the current owners. They bought the domain name, they built the site, they generated the traffic, and now he wants it arbitrarily transferred to him? That doesn't seem right.

    But it isn't. The top-end smartphones seem to be priced pretty similarly regardless of OS.

    I've worked a fair bit with the latest 1-Gig and 10-Gig parts (i350 and 82599). They seem pretty decent and stable, good enough for telecom use, though like all chips they do have a list of errata.

    The developers are fairly active about updating the linux drivers in the core kernel as well as on sourceforge. The new chips (the 10-gig one especially) are very flexible but this means the drivers are getting a lot more complex than they used to be. (The programming manual for the 82599 is 900 pages.)

    When the NIC powers up the first thing it does is load a bunch of default settings from a chunk of nonvolatile memory (also sometimes called the EEPROM).

    You can reprogram the EEPROM using tools from the vendor, or if the driver supports it you can do it under Linux using ethtool.

    since if you avoid TSRs you have full control over the hardware.

    I once implemented a digital PID controller (with a few extra bits) using Turbo C on a 486 with an A/D card. The drivers for the card sucked, so I had to rewrite them but the result was a read/calculate/write cycle that was 4x faster than the stock driver.

    then get an SSD and run software to automatically cache stuff on it.

    The only place dedicated hybrid drives really makes sense is for upgrading old laptops...for new ones they could stick a small SSD right on the motherboard.

    You missed the part that because that device is over two years old, you can get a newer device for free when you renew your contract.

    You assume the person is *on* a contract.

    I live up in Canada. My car insurance, electrical power, natural gas, water, and waste treatment are all provided as government-owned (that is to say, owned by *me*) utilies. Our rates are lower than the private rates in nearby provinces.

    I'm currently charged exorbitant amounts of money for internet access by a private ISP (the local cable company). I would *love* for the city to take over last-mile Internet connectivity, and then a bunch of independent ISPs could offer different packages for upstream connectivity. As it stands you have two choices for Internet access, the phone company or the cable company.
