  2. Sure, that would be fun on Fabulous Prize: A Trip To The Intl. Space Station · · Score: 1

I know that geeks can stay in front of a computer for extended periods of time, but alot of people would go insane when they are stuck in a puny, fragile tin can that's surrounded by vacuum. Then again, the specifications for the winner are so strict that they probably have a specific person in mind.

  3. The Vomit Comet on Fabulous Prize: A Trip To The Intl. Space Station · · Score: 1
I think it would be pretty cool to get a ride on the Vomit Comet. Even though it only lasts for a couple minutes, the zero-G experience is still pretty cool. I just love those videos of people floating around, playing with suspended blobs of water.

Note: the Vomit Comit is a plane that goes up really high and then flies downward in a way that is perfectly coordinated with gravity. (It free falls)

  7. Encourage the sharing of software! on Warez and Abandonware · · Score: 1
Some people try to make it sound like sharing software is illegal by referring to it as piracy. This indicates that you are taking something away from somebody else, but this just plain isn't the case. If Bob copies software from Joe, does that mean Joe loses the software? Of course not!

I can't believe how people have accepted intellectual property as a fact of life.

  8. The real scary part on Is The Internet Destroying Spanish? · · Score: 1

The real scary part isn't that languages are dying, but the fact that english is our lingua franca. I am so glad that I was born english, as I would hate having to learn it as a second language. What we really need for the internet's language is {esperanto, lojban, interlingua}. :)

  9. Ironic on The Author of Ping is Reported Dead · · Score: 1

  10. Patents no longer serve their purpose on BountyQuest vs. Stupid Patent Ideas · · Score: 1
    Here is what patents do:
(from Popular Science) Some guy came up with an ultra-effecient engine, which uses two-thirds the amount of fuel used by conventional engines. He patented this device, but could not negotiate royalties with engine companies, so he just sat on the technology.
That was 15 years ago. He still hasn't found a buyer. If this technology had not been restricted, consumers would be using less gasoline now. (This doesn't mean a third less, as users of this engine would drive more, but that's not the point) If the technology was freely usable, there would be more oil left in the world.
Now, a researcher could easily come up with this idea, even independently. However, this patent stops all progress of research into these engines. Now we must take the long path around this invention. It's holding everybody back.

So, why should one man be allowed to hold back the entire automotive industry with the silliness of "I thought of it first so therefore I own it"?

With all these problems, more focus should be on the design and planning of a mission, and less on equipment. I have often thought of a barrage of mini-sattelites sent as one or several packages, which relay info around.
