Well, it is powered by Linux, and so far, at least, viruses have had a horrible time trying to infect them. Seeing that the market share of linux is still going to be terriblely low even after this, I doubt that security is a major problem.
This is a study conducted by a group of respected sciencists. The fact that they are talking at all means that the ressults have to be statistically important.
I'd say the effect on society is more people getting off. That's less wound up lunatics out there killing people because lets face it, no matter how bad your day, would you ever even consider killing someone after an orgasm?
As I seem to recall, many rapists kill their victims afterwards.
They may not know everything at the begining of class. However, they would be able to learn everything in 10% of time that it takes everybody else. Moving these kids though the system faster will save resources.
I think that the answer is "profit en masse" remember, they are already turning a profit. something that most companys in the dot-com era never managed.
