    When I was in college a few years back, almost every prof was working on research products for the military. This means that the military is effectively paying stipends to a small army of grad students. When you add in things like the research that Lockheed and the such are doing (and funding), the military is in fact doing exactly what you are suggesting what it does. Most of the cost of all of those high end weapons is R&D, and when you get down to it, R&D dollars is paying some grad student somewhere to sit down and do research.

    Considering that Brazil have had lots of hyperinflation in the past, and that the Real is seeing very high inflation right now, inflation is the last reason why you would want to hold Reals instead of dollars.

    A cruise missile that blows up in another country leaves quite a bit in the US - the GPS technology that was developed to guide that missile can also guide you home when you are driving, the material science research done allows you to build more fuel efficient jets and cars, so on and so forth. Chances are, the current roll out of UAVs will mean much faster wireless tech coming down the pike.

    It should be noted that the Chinese government never guaranteed rights like absolute free speech to its citizens. In theory, there are a lot of things that people not not allowed to say, and aside from that, they are allowed to say what they want. In reality, obviously, there is no such protection, but even in theory, the protections are quite weak.

    Most of the computing was American. Yes, Turing did some cool stuff in the UK, but the stuff that would one day lead to computers (ENIAC and so forth) were all American.

    Books can last that long. They usually don't. The average library throws out a large number of books every day. Most of the books thrown out are usually not very old. Also, storing and organizing the books are not cheap, neither is shipping them from branch to branch.

    libraries are not cheap. It is probably cheaper to lend them the e reader then to maintain the stacks of books.

    Different colored light can be compensated for easily in software. With good metering, even sharp lights isn't that big of a issue. The 3D nature of the human face and camera noise are probably the biggest issues, but noise is being dealt with in cameras (albeit slowly), and 3D nature of the human face doesn't fuck with a picture that much.

    Predictions are hard. There are a large number of extremely iconic companies that have failed in the past. How do you know that Exxon won't be one of them?

    We do have a system like that here in California. It is not working extremely well as the people just keep voting in spending increases while voting down tax increases.

    Well, the 7900GT is also several years old. For example, the 9400 GT (the best video card that you can find in a netbook) perform at around 50% the power of a 7900GT. When you consider that the PSP will have far lower resolution, it doesn't seem unreasonable that the PSP will be able to feel more powerful on the graphics front, even if it may or may not actually be.
