Our different worldviews are pretty obvious I guess.
"Rude" - Defines your actions in the context in which they affect others.
"Stress-relieving" - Defines actions only as they relate to yourself without regard for the feelings of others.

I read articles and discussions online because I'm interested to see what people think about certain issues, to learn, or to offer my opinion.

As to the humor question: In my experience, the ratio of people who think they're funny to the number of people who are actually funny is at least 100:1 on places like Slashdot. It's definitely true that humor is in the eye of the beholder to some degree, but many out there who would claim that they are trying to be "funny" clearly aren't. Vandalizing Wikis, for example, clearly isn't funny and they can really only work as long as people treat each other with respect.

I've just completed a Master's project on incorporating Reputation Management into BitTorrent. The idea is that if you give file slices first to people who are likely to stay connected and share, it will increase the overall bandwidth of the system and eventually increase everyone's performance. My simulation results show an average speedup of 5% for everyone in the network (good citizens get up to 15% speedup). I don't have a website, but if anyone wants to contact me about getting my research into the spec, I'd be happy to send you the paper.

That's not what the law is talking about. It says that judges should disqualify themselves from a case if they are related (i.e. have it assigned to another court). I don't think any reasonable person would question the objectivity of Rehnquist in this case. Having a son who works for Microsoft (even in the case function of a anti-trust lawyer) is hardly the same as having a son who is on trial.

  16. the 'right to privacy' on E-Mail, Privacy and the Law · · Score: 1

Ok, I'll probably get flamed for this, but here are my overall sentiments on the subject. No where in the constitution does it say that we have a right to privacy. For example, the police can get a warrant and search your house if they have probable cause. I think that email should be the same way, I certainly don't think that any law enforcement agencies should be allowed to look through your stuff without cause, but I do think that if they suspect you of a crime, they should be able to obtain a warrant and examine your personal information, whether or not you have encryted your emails. I don't believe that we should let criminals get away with telling people things just because they did it on the internet. I know geeks don't like the idea that authorities can see what they've been doing (probably because what they've been doing is disgusting), but the only justification they have is this mythical "right to privacy" that doesn't even really exist. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.
