It's quite amazing how easy it is to get running.

  7. Cake model of Globalization on Defining Globalism · · Score: 1

There is a fantastic book by Ursula Franklin called "The Real World of Technology" that has a great model of globalization. She uses slicing a cake as the model. We usually slice the cake vertically by making regional policies and decisions. Each slice can operate independently and control does traverse the vertical slices. Globalization slices the cake sideways and creates layers that span the entire cake. Policies are then defined for the entire cake and you loose the ability for vertical slices or local/regional policies.

So, things may be more efficient for corporations and large governments to operate on the level of global policies but those policies may be in direct opposition to local interests. Gradually, individuals, and small groups loose the ability to influence policies that effect them.

  9. A good cheap case is hard to find... on Cheap Rackmount Enclosures/Systems? · · Score: 1

I've done some searching and it's not easy finding good cheap rackmount cases. I've bought good cases from http://www.sliger.com/ but I don't think they sell direct any more. I've recently ordered a 1U rackmount case from http://gtweb.net/ and I'm eagerly waiting for the delivery! They were the cheapest I was able to find.

  10. What would you do? on Domain Resale for Fun and Profit(?) · · Score: 1

This Rick Schwartz guy "owns" a domain which happens to be the name of a company that I work for. That company uses a different address, but if people go to the name .com they get a porn site, which as far as I can tell, Schwartz is in no way associated with that porn company. He holds the domain for ransom by pointing our name to a porn site. Not good PR.

The guy claims that he NEVER sells domains and that he will make "arrangements". It's a real mess.

Some might say, "tough luck", since we didn't register it in time. Well, our company didn't exist a year ago and we are more commonly known by our short name rather than our full long name.

What would you do if someone pointed your company name at a porn site?

I've been trying to find an affordable GSM modem to no avail. I'm currious as to what kind of unit these guys are using. I wonder if it is one of these or this.
If anybody knows of some other GSM modems out there I'd love to hear about them. Any body ever get a Linux box to talk to a Nokia 2190?

  12. I seek silence! on Ask Slashdot:Ergo Keyboards · · Score: 1
I never seem to have trouble with crappy qwerty's and my wrists... true, typing badly helps.

What I'm looking for is a SILENT keyboard. I need a keyboard that doesn't make any noise at all.

    Does such a beast exist?

I suppose I could duct tape a pillow over my keyboard. (But then the back lighting would be a fire hazzard, wouldn't it... ;-)
