Every big tittle I can think of targets windows/directX.
WoW for example doesn't have a Linux client. You have to emulate it with wine. Wine is doing better and better, but the fact is, devs don't target Linux so people have to emulate if they want to play.
You are also making the false assumption that every one of these devices are used for gaming; that is not the case. However, I can say with good numbers backing me up that an xbox 99$% of the time will be used for gaming, even if I dislike the platform.
Please don't weaken your arguments by making use of fallacious logic.
The Day Open GL dies will be the day the music died. Not a good day, for open source or for gameing in general.
The games that have defined the last few decades or so all started as opengl games, not direct X games. Doom, Hexan, Halo (written originally for Apple systems), etc.
Problem is its going to increase cost and the new features don't do anything useful that I'm aware of, at least nothing that makes it easier for me as a dev to code games people enjoy. Its just adding feature bloat.
I generally agree if its not used its bloat but lets face it, we need to worry about the open source software stack as well. A big part of lock-in is video, after all. That is why Open Source Game Development is usually so stagnate, with few but always notable exceptions.
What you are failing to understand is that unless this new spec makes minecraft run faster, most people will not care the new spec was released. And Adding this new spec to hardware increases costs, so most people will be against it on the basis that it costs them more money for the same thing. I'm not against progress by any means, but unless its REAL PROGRESS and VALUE is ADDED this sort of thing is worthless.
And the reason for all of this new stuff is, what exactly?
Playing the devils advocate: I can render tits just fine already, so why do I need this feature bloat as well?
From a practical perspective: The old standard is ruining fine on games I love, and a new standard will just complicate things and force people to upgrade to hardware since it looks like some of this stuff would be difficult at best to do in software only and get good perf.
From a commercial perspective: Great, now I have increased development costs as a result of a new standard that everybody will want to target just because its new, even if my game doesn't need any of the new fluff.
From a open source perspective: I worry about the open source stack as a result, its already hard enough to develop games that matter for linux, and impossible to get a dev house to take it seriously that's not an Indy.
It looks to me that somebody - the standards body - is just - in the paraphrased words of a popular song about airplanes "spec'n to stay relevant".
Can somebody with more free time tell the rest of us the value this actually gives? Or is it so aparent - and I so old - that as the "old guy" I am just being bitter?
O'really?
Jolicloud doesn't have anything to switch to; Its a web page that stores your browser bookmarks and thats pretty much it. I can do the same thing in firefox, without using that proprietary software, and get the same functionality without needing to worry about not having the software I want to run. Jolicloud doen't offer anything special, and it provides no value whatsoever for most people.
I hate to say this, but having never worked at MS but having been given the opportunity, and based on my limited exposure to the recruiters and the people at the time, I have to agree with you.
Somebody mod parent up as I lack the points to do so.
Not trolling; Conical has the resources and community though ubuntu to do it.
The open source community - as far as I have seen - has always said that gnome has a heavy case of NIH. Problem with that is it leads to the idea - correct or not - that everybody in the gnome leadership are heavy handed snobs, even if that's not necessarily the case (I'm not calling them that, just noting the perspective I have seen most voiced) and I personally have never met anybody who actually LIKED the gnome-way of doing things (even people in the gnome community), only parts of the end result.
Seems to me, the end result could be much better if somebody forked gnome and made them compete with themselves and not "kde verses gnome" a little.
You guys joke, but I have actually dated women that were known for winning modeling contests, and they always seemed more needy.
The women who are used to getting attention all the time get worried and needy when they dont get the attention suddenly because you have to work or you have a personal project you want to finish, and it makes them worry and fear and as the wise Yoda once said, that leads to anger and general b*tch*ness in the end.
Granted you can usually catch these sort of women on the way down into depression and get them in the emo "I will try anything to get my self esteem back" phase - its usually worth a week or two of good times until they start feeling better - but really on the other side of the coin I have found that women who don't get attention all the time are usually more happy and easier to spend time with for long amounts of time after the fun is over, and they are generally more appreciative of the time and effort you put into the relationship.
Because mail is sorted through machines that bend all mail.. its industry standard and part of the automated sorting racks that read the digital stamp placed over the actual stamp, based on the USPS employee I talked to.
Nice attempt to insult, but really, read what I said again.
I'm familiar with the higher end H1B's, as I work in the technology sector. MS, Google, Intel, IBM, are all the type - and sometimes the - companies I have worked at. I'm in the very high end, and I see this rampant abuse by American companies all the time.
Like I said: Welcome to America.
As much as I hate to feed the trolls, I have a friend who works in the recruiting industry and he has confirmed this as true.
I have known people in the H1B side of things that knew what they were talking about, and worked with a few I wished could have remained in the states, but most of them did not have the skills they claimed and a lot of the ones I had to check on when I was hiring people had actual falsified resumes, family and friend type references for jobs that never existed, and worse.
That is one thing I learned fast, people who are H1B will look out for each other, even if it means they need to lie.
It also turns out people in the staffing industry make it worse, because some of my friends in the staffing industry - who are desperately trying to get out so if you know of any reputable staffing company let me know - are actually not allowed to give American Citizens jobs if a cheaper H1B is willing to take the position, even if the American Citizen is more qualified or has better technical expertise.
Its a business decision. In the end, they have to present the H1B's because they know they will make more money from them being so cheap even if they don't have the technical skills, so in the end the American stays jobless even if he or she would have been the better choice for the position. And even if an American submits his resume to a lot of staffing companies, the staffing companies will often "hold the ball" and let the person looking for a job *think* they have been submitted - while not actually doing so - and all the while the staffing company will warn the person seeking employment not to not allow other recruiters to submit them to the same job postings "so you don't get a double submittable that could take away your chance of being hired". So while they hold the ball, the higher priced but more technical person does not get hired, the staffing company fills the role with a cheaper H1B, and the staffing company makes more money as a result.
So really, the staffing companies are the ones doing this, that and companies that feed this cycle by using a lot of cheap H1B consultants when they could use American workers with better skill sets.
Yeah, its messed up. Yeah, it sucks when you are the American with 10+ years experience who cant find a job in tech you know like the back of your hand because people who cant even explain what a pointer is - despite that being a strict skill requirement for the position - get the job instead, But really, you cant do anything about it either, and that just sucks even more.
Like it or not, I think you are a terrible person for driving drunk. Its drunk drivers like you who made me a widower and killed both my wife and the child in her womb, and the fact that you still dont take responsability for the fact that you have willingly endangered others lives is as deeply insulting as it can get.
I hope somehow, someday, you get exactly what you deserve for your crimes, becouse its clear no punishment you have had was enough.
If you are smart, phone control of a car works

James Bond Gadgets

I know this because I designed/created a system to do it a few years back.
Its actually not very hard, I did this with a app on my then-new smart phone, using its internet access to connect car based computer I also gave internet access and configured to use a static host name using a dy-dns like setup on the car based computer system.
The hardest problem I had was calibration of the electronics to interface with the actual driving of the car; I never realized how much we as humans compensate for a slight directional drift on the steering wheel, or how refined our ability to break slowly is. Also, the brakes are an issue as the correct leverage for the breaks can be broken easily if you don't set it up correctly; Get it wrong and you cant actually use the car outside of the remote control because the assembly to drive it is in the way.
In general, The older the car, the more issues you will have. Also, the power and electrical systems are the picture of inadequacy if you are looking to build your own 'Kit'.
I actually may try to dig out my old notes, many of my ideas for additions may be possible now.
In any case, if you are disabled and you are genuinely interested in making FOSS work for the disabled, there is only one way to make that happen: contribute your time, your skills, and/or your money.
As I said above, the only people really interested in helping the blind are people who are blind themselves or have family who is. That usualy measn that they do not have the money, resources, or skills (Or they have the skills but dont have the tools) to do so.
Why dont you try educating yourself on the topic before you promote FUD?
Now imagine having to listen to that voice ever time you wanted to communicate with people like you, research something, or simply use the computer for random tasks.

Only 25%? Last year I figured out how to compress 1,000,000TB down to a floppy; They are so behind the times.
Tip: Compression is fast, but decompression is very slow.
And yes, I have mailed myself my notes as a form of prior art.

I personaly use the term "Sightie".
I agree.
""Study shows FOSS has Fewer Blind Programmers than Microsoft Does"" Sadly, it may even be true.
Now imagine having to listen to that voice ever time you wanted to communicate with people like you, research something, or simply use the computer for random tasks.
Only a fucknut coward would tell a blind person to read a *printed* book. You sir, are a scoundral and worse.
I was simply showing what many have to face; I meant no disrespect.
