"First, there would be significant, and entirely unnecessary, costs incurred by all state agencies, departments, cities, counties, and school districts to procure new software applications that support the OpenDocument format for their individual users. Many state agencies already have licenses for Microsoft Office and other software products that do not support the OpenDocument format, and the expense already borne by these state agencies for Microsoft Office and such other products' licenses would be wasted by disallowing use of these products after Jan. 2007. As a result, costs to taxpayers would rise as executive agencies would be forced to toss out software they have already paid for, that they already know how to use, and that they can already use for archiving in open standard XML formats."
Aren't MS just confirming that they lock customers in to their products with this statement which is exactly what they're trying to get away from? Further, if the MS formats are "open standard XML formats" why on earth do we have to reverse engineer them to support them in competing products?
We all know MS work like drug dealers by giving away cheap deals to start and then raking in the profit when their customers need to spend so much capital to swap to something else. Is this just their way of sending around 'the heavies' when things aren't going their way??
- Motor driven as you suggest
- Manual powered compressed air
- Gas powered
I would have thought the second two would fire fertiliser pellets without breaking them, the main problem I can see would be that the pellets would need to be an (almost) perfect sphere so that the gas/compressed air doesn't escape around the sides of the pellet. However, using a gas powered gun could prove expensive in a farming type environment (how much do big tanks of gas cost these days??) and using a manual powered compressed air type gun would cause problems in delivering the force to reload (compress the air) after each shot.
BTW: I saw a BB mini-gun in Hong Kong ages ago, that thing would look great on something like this! Although at HK$40,000 (about £3.5k at the time) I think I'd prefer to by a few gadgets.
For anyone intending to re-watch Aliens because they don't remember this part, the sentry gun scene was only in the directors cut. Oh, and IIRC one of the guns ran out of ammo, the other had a couple of bullets left but the aliens had been scared off by then.
From yesterdays article re: IE more secure blah blah
"There is one caveat: Symantec counts only those security flaws that have been confirmed by the vendor. According to security monitoring company Secunia, there are 19 security issues that Microsoft still has to deal with for Internet Explorer, while there are only three for Firefox.
Secunia: Errr MS, you have another security flaw in IE. MS Employee: Really? OK, let me test the problem and get back to you with confirmation. MS Employee to boss: We have another security flaw in IE. MS Boss: Can we fix it?? MS Employee: It'll take a *insert long period here* MS Boss to Secunia: Are you sure theres a flaw? We can't find a problem.
What reinstalling Windows thing?? Last time I changed a mobo on a win (2k) machine I just got "installing new hardware" when I rebooted - does XP force you to reinstall now???
Hmmm 3 different energy savings... I wonder why that could be... hmmmm let me read the article again... OOOHHHHH perhaps it's because they're adverts for the "Sun Fire tm X2100, X4100, and X4200" - that'd be 3 different machines then!
Perhaps someone could enlighten me but I'm still unsure why the ROKR is meant to be new and inovative.
I use a Treo as a phone and have 2GB of space on my SD card (less a few MB of applications) for MP3's or OGG's, WMA's etc... and of course being a Treo I can do a hell of a lot more than just phone and music. There are also many phones that have memory card and MP3 support, so what's new? The fact that you can use iTunes? YAY - big whoop!
Surely I must be missing something here but the number of already existing phones that can play MP3's with up to 2GB storage that function better than the ROKR is outstanding! Perhaps if they'd included their 'iWheel' navigation (or whatever they call it) and gone for ease of use then perhaps my opinion might be different.
From the Itronix site:
"...as well professional "road warriors" whose notebook must *reliably* endure the tumultuous and often unpredictable conditions that come with using a notebook on the go."
"Itronix recommends Windows® XP"
Surely those 2 phrases should not be on the same page????
I think you mis understand what the Hz for digital music is: imagine an audio wave as a Sine wave. The digital Hz means that it takes a measurement that many times per second - so instead of having a nice smooth sine wave you actual get a more jagged curve (imagine what it would look like with only 5 measurements - a bar graph almost!). The more steps the better the quality...
Thanks for the info, I always thought little people inside my head transmitted the data to my brain... you learn something new everyday!
Anyway, how can a simple analogy get on to the subject of outer hair cells? - They're the cells that convert the mechanical to electrical energy (stereocilia) and then to chemical energy (synaptic structures) which activate the nerve fibres.
The analogy isn't flawed, it's our eyes! If we had eye implants that could read the second hand more accurately we would have more benefit from the smooth second hand... which is how it is with music, we (or some people) can tell the difference.
In response to the various posts above re: using a lasoor, digital music & vinyl disappearing:
Vinyl will never go away because analog sound IS better than digital. The best analogy I can think of is a digital watch vs analog watch with a smooth moving second hand. A digital watch usualy has a smallest measurement of 1/100th of a second, a smooth moving second hand has an infinitely small minimum measurement.
However, with a watch you're unlikely to be able to actually read anything smaller than a second (or perhaps 1/2 a second) on the smooth moving second hand... but with music our ears (or at least some peoples ears) can hear a lot more from an analog source than is present in a digital copy... and no I don't mean that crackle you get on bad quality turntables/gramaphones!
The article relies on somebody setting up a web server that allows SQL injection and runs using the admin user... who in their right mind would set up a system like this??
They may aswell have written an article on how to crack a system if somebody sends you the SA password... pathetic!
Don't be put off by the 666 tattooed on his forehead and the left leg

Yeah, it just means his is readable and writable by himself, his group, and others
Its a good thing he's not executable, or this joke would be killing him.
That's not a tattoo on his left leg... it's the sticky bit
I love the way a lord of the rings reference gets a score of -1, Troll - very funny whoever modded that ;P

Sadly I live in the UK now - don't think customs would like me bringing in a replica mini-gun ;P
There are different types of BB gun:
- Motor driven as you suggest
- Manual powered compressed air

On Linux, you might have to change some configs however, to get all the features working.
Or maybe recompile your kernel depending how specific it is with drivers for onboard sound yadda yadda...

From the article: "Having to replace a motherboard usually necessitates a long-winded process of reinstalling an OS, programs, and personal data."
Since when has swapping a motherboard forced me to format my hard disks???

I guess they were the 2 albums the site owner used to test if the thing worked properly... i.e: they've probably been downloaded twice each
