Debian sarge uses Exim4 as the default MTA... you can hear that from Martin Michlmayr (project leader @ Debian) or from postfix install instructions for debian at debianhelp.

Hence the name, of course - Apache is "a patchy" webserver, as it started off life as a bunch of patches to NCSA httpd.

Well according to the Apache group this isn't actually true, although I believe it is - I just think they're trying to get away from the original meaning of the name.

In relation to the parent post, if I remember correctly they started creating Apache as NCSA had stopped being developed.

Haven't you ever used the mail function of php on linux/unix? That still uses sendmail. Infact I still use sendmail in shell scripts all the time. Considering how old sendmail is and the fact that people, even those as big as php, still use it I don't think the statement that the e-mail revolution happened despite it is fair - just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad.

The local cache for yum is located in /var/cache/yum/, if the file is already downloaded it will not download it again, it will only redownload the repomd.xml file again and continue. A useful distinction is the progress bars "###" & "===", the first is reading and the second is downloading.

yum is very strict on how to handle errors and personally if I was getting a kernel upgrade (or something else important) via yum I would definately want it to be careful! This is mentioned in the YumTodont - the discussion linked from the YumTodont gives some good insight on the topic aswell.

FUD!! Treo's crash due to 3rd party applications (at least with up to date firmware and default applications). If you get a crash on a Treo you can dial #*377 (code is dependent on Treo type) and it will tell you what application crashed it - remove the 3rd party app that's crashing your system and your fine again! The main reason why the palm Treo's are so good is that there are loads of 3rd party apps, however a lot have been written by hobbyists or for previous versions of Palm OS - why do people keep blaming Palm for other peoples errors?

Having said that, perhaps the 700w (and subsequent Windows versions) will help with the learning curve for execs.

  23. New Kernel???? on Initial Reactions to Fedora Core 5 · · Score: 1

Personally I didn't think this review was worth the read... does this guy actually know anything about linux? Fro example he states:

"Basically a new kernel was required because of a glitch with the default kernel and non-gpl drivers."

Yes - nVidia have non-gpl drivers which is why they're not included in the distro, however a new kernel is NOT required to install them. When installing the nVidia drivers they install script will try and download the driver module for the correct kernel via ftp, if there are no drivers on the ftp site for your kernel then it will compile them. This requires the kernel source, which Fedora doesn't install by default (something I think it should do but anyway). If you install the kernel source rpm the nVidia drivers will install fine with the default kernel.

The MP3 issue is the same, the MP3 format is not free all over the world - therefore it is not included as default. If you can legally use the MP3 format where you are doing a "yum install xmms-mp3" (if you use xmms) is hardly a problem... although perhaps they should have an option during installation asking if you can legally use MP3's and do it for you.

Also there's no mention of disk partitioning, did the user just choose auto partitioning? Someone I know tried FC5 last night and had problems with overlapping cylinders and not being able to create 4 primary partitions. Sounds like there's a few bugs in the version of disk druid - still not a problem if you use the emergency shell (ctrl-alt-f2) and use fdisk and return with ctrl-alt-f7 to tell disk druid which partitions you want as which.

From TFA it seems like this reviewer is more concerned with nice eye candy (downloading a wallpaper etc) than actually writing the review... perhaps he should move back to Windows if that's the case!

OK, either gates doesn't know anything about computing, which he obviously does starting M$ etc... He's getting old (possible, but unlikely)... or it's just FUD to try and sell the new MS based products over there instead:

"The last thing you want to do for a shared use computer is have it be something without a disk ... and with a tiny little screen," Gates said at the Microsoft Government Leaders Forum in suburban Washington.

"Hardware is a small part of the cost" of providing computing capabilities, he said, adding that the big costs come from network connectivity, applications and support.

Firstly, not having a disk is a perfect way to save money in a shared environment. These things aren't going to get perfectly looked after in the harsh living conditions some of these developing countries, and crime is common place. The hardware needs to be as cheap as possible so that if it gets damaged it can easily be replaced (straight swap instead of support needed) and to deter the thought of stealing them - imagine the security costs for all the computer ctr's in the developing world - further with regards to support, if all the applications are remote the support for those is easily managed in one place with good security!

The applications can be free - although he does have a relatively valid point re: screen size... but I don't think it's too much of an issue!
