that cannot be... surely there'd be an endless amount of problems with stateful firewalls. not to mention that isa and msproxy server would have to support this.
are we sure that the author just doesn't understand persistant connections???
a simple netstat -a would show you if the connection was kept open... i'm using squid as my proxy so can't test this.
I remember walking down the path to my kinda/preschool. I've also got some memories from when i was about 2 but they also exist on 8mm film so it's more likely that watching the film 're-implanted' those memories to some extent.
more cash to the vendors. less cash to microsoft. they are probably making more money from online users than they are on xboxes. in fact even if they break even on the online stuff they are still ahead of xbox revenues which are anti revenues:)
it would be... if it were true. but in fact buying xbox's and then not buying games for them is (supposedly) a good way to make microsoft lose money. think of an xbox as an anti-sale for microsoft.
as the 80186 was a different processor to the 8088 and 8086, repeat for 8086 vs the other two.
but really, the 8088 was just an 8086 with an external 8 bit data path (like the 386SX to the 386DX), and the 80186 was just an 8086 with some extra on-chip io.
It all depends on where you want to draw the line, that's where I chose to draw it.:p
i wonder if it will really be called the pentium V... we had: 8086/8088/80186 (they were just sorting out names here) 80286 80386 486 then not 586 but Pentium Pentium Pro (ignore this one) Pentium 2 Pentium 3 Pentium 4 Based on the limited sample size, Intel appears to have an aversion to the number 5, my guess is the new processor will be called the 'pentium pentium', with the subsequent processor called the 'pentium pentium 2', all the way up until the 5th incantation of the 'pentium pentium' where the processor will be named the 'pentium pentium pentium', and so on (and yes, i do think they will still be making x86 based processors then)
... if you can compare the human genome to source code, then the method they used to get the source code is obviously 'reverse engineering', with all the legal implications that has:)
I've often wondered if some of the processing could have been made a distributable project (a la SETI)... it would have been cool to say I contributed to the human genome mapping effort!
When I saw this in/. I was thinking to myself "i've seen this already today somewhere... where could it be..." and this post made me remember! Someone's already posted it on the darwin awards in the 'slush pile'/pending! Probably been deleted now tho... don't think you can nominate someone for *planning* to do something that *may* earn them a darwin:)
... it's a damn good read! I read the first few paragraphs just to make sure it was the same one I read form the cDc files a while back and it seemed to be the same
... they have to catch me first (I run pretty fast when i'm scared:) And even if they do catch me I still stand a chance of having a superhuman surge of strength and sticking the knife between their eyes instead. Chances are no amount of superhuman strength is going to allow me to stop a bullet and throw it back!
was this the same machine with the HCF instruction? (Halt and Catch Fire:) In the days of the C64 someone went through all the undocumented opcodes and gave the ones that locked up the machine etc silly names so this could have been it...
I think it was NT on Alpha at SP3 (or was it SP2???) that had a known problem that would take upwards of 30 minutes to shut down. I can't remember if it was related to a service or what but it used to annoy the hell out of me before we upgraded to SP4! just 15 minutes downtime I would tell the users...
I have a Honeywell mouse that has no ball but 2 tilted disks on the bottom, one tilted such that it captures vertical movement, the other such that it captures horizontal. I bought it for about AUS$35 3 years ago and have never needed to clean it. It works on just about any surface including my leg when I am deprived of bench space. It has been the innocent outlet (not cause) of much frustration and it still works perfectly. It is unfortunately only 2 button but I think they make a 3 button version. It is not particularly ergonomic either but I love it.
Why then are there not more of these things around? They solve all the problems with the usual mouse ball and cleaning etc... maybe Honeywell have a patent on it or something???
I got a MS mouse with my last computer and it lasted about a month or two, which most people I know take for granted! A mouse does not have to be a disposable item! Quality units do exist and are worth the price.
I read something like this about 10 years ago, someone had a trippy demo and used a fresnel lens in a similar arrangement as a *projector*, looked pretty good except that the image was upsidedown and back to front or something, which didn't matter for this particular demo but would for anything else....

not in my backyard thanks.

howabout over the ocean. a bit more water won't hurt it

no. mercury.
it was used to cure the felt in felt hats.
or at least that's what i read somewhere...
54 comments, and only one triffid reference??? and that one made reference to the _stupid_ movie where salt water killed them.
what's wrong with you people!
maybe there's just nothing funny about plants that eat people...

Shhh! They might hear!

doesn't the word metric come from meter? or is it the other way around?
surely the correct term is 'decimal' and not 'metric' time.

thats my 2 bits worth anyway.
