You know, maybe after 20 or 30 years we ARE entitled to those works. That's my world view, you have yours, but we'll see who wins in the end: Millions/billions of people or a select few who want to plug their ears and go "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"
For a movie or something I think a year or two should be the limit, but the poster I responded to was complaining that they didn't want to wait a whole week and thought that was justification for their actions, which I thought that was being just a little stupid and childish.
Because it's fun to watch all the people on soapboxes arguing back and forth without reading the article and barely reading the summary? 25 comments in and it's already a hoot!
Close. Cash is the equivalent of no backups. Having your money in a regulated, underwritten by government, bank is having your money well backed up. An unregulated industry like bitcoin (as illustrated in TFA) is the worst of both worlds.
Unless you are going 6 months without being scanned, and assuming these changes are fairly linearly progressive and not abrupt, it wouldn't be hard to just update the database with the changes based on an allowed variation over time if multiple scanners are registering a change.
If there is anything wrong with biometric scanning it isn't this.
However, I don't see a problem with him being allowed to keep his license given that he has been ordered to carry out community service at locations that are likely outiside any reasonable walking distance from his residence
Maybe forcing him to ride a motorbike would be better punishment?
If I were the judge i'd definitely be making inquiries about banning him from holding a phone capable of any form of messaging for 5 years though.
Me too, only i do have windows. I played dumb for a bit - she asked me to open event viewer and look for any warning or error messages (there always are) which would indicate my computer was infected. I told her there were none. We went around in circles for ages with her getting me to re-open event viewer, scroll down, etc, to find this "proof" that my computer was infected. After a while she started asking every few minutes if I still wanted to continue the call. Eventually I told her i'm bored of this and hung up.
I suspect that a lot of these "first level" support people who actually call you then eventually pass you on are people who responded to "make money from home" ads, and are just as stupid as the people they are trying to scam.
Lets try an Einstein-ian thought experiment. Dude runs over your friend and kills them. Do you feel any different about your friend's death knowing dude was texting or trying to eat a fast food burger? We are being extremely heavily propagandized that death from texting is horrifically worse than death by burger/cd/radio/8 track/plain ole daydreaming/being lost/reading a old fashioned paper map/reading a GPS map.
Hell yes I would feel different. People aren't perfect... sometimes your attention drifts and bad things happen. Deliberately picking up a phone and taking your eyes off the road is a whole lot different than that though. Your friend is still dead, but in the latter case it's a result of a deliberate action and not an accident.
My biggest problem is there is no good way to communicate with another driver to kindly ask them to be careful with your life while you're on the road; most people beep and take it as a sign of aggression - or worse, just jump to the middle finger
No need to be kind. I've thought about starting one of those "share with your friends" thing on facebook where the idea is that if you see someone driving with a phone held to their ear, or texting (harder to notice) you hold down your horn until they stop. I'm not sure enough other people would think it a good idea though... horns aren't designed to be used for an hour a day and the ensuing road rage would be spectular.
Have any ideas at the likely to be possible in the next fifty years level?
Either that, or better buttstrap bombs. This is the problem with progress... it might be safer and (maybe) cost less with tomorrows technology, but that will still be true tomorrow too, and if you keep waiting for tomorrow you'll never get anywhere.
So if we want to go beyond the earth's atmosphere now we'll just have to keep strapping bombs to our butts.
Now if only we could secure sufficient funding for NASA and space exploration in general, because no matter whether we had a shutdown or a catastrophe every failed launch is an expensive exercise.
The latter being significantly more expensive than the former...
Pharmaceuticals would still be in clinical trials when their patents would expire. How about we just focus on getting rid of bad patents that don't bring knowledge or insight to society?
I had the same thought about the pharaceuticals. Even non-pharmaceuticals can have a long time-to-market once the patent has been filed.
A better idea would be (say) 20 years from filing or 5 years from the date of first sale, whichever is sooner. 20 years might be a bit generous... I don't know the specifics of clinical trial durations, but just a date so you couldn't just sit on the patent forever.
With a 5 year duration, the 'bad patent' thing would probably solve itself.
What if they just moved the ads to the end of the show? That would suck less than having it constantly interrupted and the advertisers still get eyeballs on their content (in theory).
It's gotten to the point in Australia where the commercial channels clip the content before the ad break so for stuff like the simpsons you often don't get to hear the punchline. No wonder people download the stuff.
If their altimeter wasn't accurate, they could have been much higher, and began suffering symptoms of hypoxia faster. The immediate descent could have done exactly what you said, controlled flight into terrain.
Apart from having a morbid interest in the specifics of air disasters (or any failure of a complex system), I know next to nothing about aircraft, but don't they have some form of terrain avoidance radar or something built in? Someone told me in Australia that all new cars will have an automatic braking collision avoidance built in from 2015 or something like that, eg "the only way you will not hit that object is if you brake now, so i'm doing it for you". As a demo model I assume this plane was fitted out with all the optional extras.
Anti-theist strawman. Please cite a credible source where a religious institution or representative thereof states as an article of faith that the cause was not natural and, hence, inaccessible to science.
You're kidding right? Didn't a bunch of cults spring up overnight when this "miracle" happened? Fair enough, the mainstream churches all distanced themselves from these nutjobs but at the time the believers all decided that they saw what they saw, science be damned.
I guess you'll refute the above because I haven't provided any sources, but it wouldn't matter because those guys don't represent a true "religious institution" anyway, which of course becomes much easier if you separate religious types into "those that believe the stuff I believe and therefore form a credible religious institution" and "nutjobs"...

Real guns work even better than paintball guns... just sayin.
I'm a pirate and proud of it. Because I'm not just doing it because I can, but because there's no other choice.
Other than not watching it you mean? Or were you so blinded by your sense of entitlement to the works of others that that option didn't occur to you?

There's a bit of fuss in Australia at the moment because despite our unemployment, they are allowing foreign workers to be imported.

"Hang on, I just need to find my credit card" will get them waiting for longer.

>I'm lucky I had another.
I don't think irreplaceable means what you think it means...
He has 20 of them. Each one irreplaceable.
you could take skin cells from where the sun doesn't shine.
For the stereotypical slashdotter, that's any part of the body ;)
I'll be happy as long as modern medicine can keep me alive until we perfect mind uploading. Sometimes I get really sick of being a bag of meat.
What if someone illegally downloads you? That could really hurt!
Over 100% of users will be pirates within just four years.
Things will be so much better when that happens. The authorities can then just arrest anyone they don't like and have a guaranteed conviction!

Yeah I'm beating that drum, and I will be for the foreseeable future.
Ready in 10 years? I'm not investing in that - someone will have invented something better by then! :p

Curse nature for not conforming to our nomenclature!!!

It's good for T-Shirt sales too. I'm sure the "I survived a flight on the Superjet 100" is a hot item right now!
