Using an AP which explicitly advertises itself as available to use according to IEEE 802.11 cannot be a 'fault'.
Setting up an AP to advertise itself as available when you 'did not mean it', however, can be.
Claiming that making a resource public and available according to a certain technical standard does not really mean that it may be used is just nonsense. This means that, to resolve a 'slashdot.org' record in DNS, you would need to get explicit permission from the domain owners, and yet another permission to connect to the resolved IP address on port 80.
Yes, representing a sine wave with just two points per period is perfectly legal in many cases.
"Sine wave becomes a freak'n square wave" means you don't understand how DAC works. To get a square wave, the output of your 44.1K DAC needs to have infinite bandwidth, which is not only theoretically impossible, but is also specifically prevented with a proper filter on the output.
To hear that "square wave" as square, your ear also needs to have infinite bandwidth, which is also impossible.
Regarding "old school analog recording equipment" - yes, in many cases, it was of awesome quality. But CD (and MP3) is not about "best obtainable quality". It was about acceptable quality, lossless copying, cheap manufacturing, and basically no degradation of the media with time even with imperfect treatment.
I would say the problem is not limited to sci-fi. Consider western, or detective stories, spy movies, or any other limited genre... The more you constrain yourself to that genre, the less is the chance to produce something to be considered an object of art. You must show space cruisers, and space battles, and people in shiny suits, etc, etc, etc... every single element limits the director's expressive abilities... well, that's if there is anything to express, of course.
The ultimate example is pr0n. If your whole movie must consist of sex scenes, there's just no chance to make it good for anything except jerking off, no matter how you tried.
Altruism is theoretically advantageous for natural selection between populations (or any groups of individuals who help each other), but not for natural selection within the group. The higher is the altruism, the lower is the selection pressure within the group. The individuals become less and less adapted to their environment, and more and more dependent on the group (e.g. on the modern society)...
It's all good, but the group becomes a single point of failure. Disperse the group, and the individual will be absolutely unfit for survival.
All these things (electricity, toilets, ipods) are primarily used for purposes other than depriving human beings of their right for life, and these things are not very convenient to use for this purpose. Guns have been designed for this, and they have no other use than 1) this and 2) threatening thy neighbor into the things you want under risk of losing his right for life, be these things you want keeping your own right for life and for your personal property, or something completely different.
Looks like they're cooperating with Gambia on this herbal brainwashing... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahya_Jammeh In early December 2006, Jammeh made a three-day visit to Iran, where he met with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and supreme leader Ali Khamenei; Ahmadinejad said that Iran would provide aid to assist in the development of The Gambia, and he and Jammeh spoke of deepening ties between the two countries.
In January 2007, Jammeh claimed he could cure HIV/AIDS and asthma with natural herbs...
Also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imod IMOD (short for "Immuno-Modulator Drug") is the name of an herbal drug that Iranian scientists allege protects those already infected by the HIV virus from the spread of AIDS by strengthening the immune system. IMOD was purportedly invented by Iranian scientists in 2006, and its alleged discovery was made public in 2007.
Why wouldn't router manufacturers just use the serial number of the device as a default password??? Yeah, the one which is printed on the case of the device. Too complicated for the user? Too hard to implement? It's hard to believe that. Use larger font if you must. You could also use the same password as a WPA key...
A parser is useless by itself. Usually you parse data to process it somehow, and processing the data (e.g. code generation in a compiler) can often also be split into separate passes. These passes can communicate rather efficiently through a lock-free queue.
Java is a comparably simple language. Learning C++ to learn Java just because they both have curly braces is absurd, and probably should be considered harmful. C++ is at least an order of magnitude more complex, and it would teach you some ideas which will be confusing in Java world (e.g. pointers, pointer arithmetic, manual memory allocation & RAII, heap-allocated vs stack-allocated, etc).
The RAII thing is severe btw, even within Java. Finalizers were used to control native resources in AWT until rather recent times. Of course it did not work as expected.
You're right regarding the bloat and downloads, however, AWT is NOT double buffered. AWT is more or less direct interface to native window API (though the controls are mostly owner-drawn due to various issues). Look at the source and you will easily figure this out. Swing usually is, though it doesn't have to be.
... I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
Yeah... We can still have drugs, despite they made it illegal, and we can still have filesharing, despite they made it illegal. Soon you'll be saying "we still can have sex, despite they made it illegal". Oh, wait, that's Slashdot... nevermind.
That's soo aameerican - all this is right and is wrong stuff... Who entitled you to claim that? I don't believe you. I want to see your papers, please.
Bollocks. Try stopping piracy. Just try it. I have a huge music collection and I have bought some - that's little compared to the pirated part, but much more than an average Joe Sixpack. If I wouldn't have a chance to pirate, I'd just stay below that Average Joe level. I wouldn't buy. Sometimes I buy just because I want to "donate" extra to the author, usually that's after a live concert. Stop piracy - do you think I'll want to do that? I'll listen much less and I'll buy much less. I'll replace it with movies, books, going out, chopping wood, growing dead parrots, talking slugs, anything...
Art isn't basic commodity. It is NOT! Try getting it down to that level, and it will sell exactly as much as it is close to being basic commodity. And not only that - you will filter out good art and only that pink britneyspears vannilla bubblegum will remain. Thank god, most of good artists understand that and don't try stopping the distribution of their creative work.
And by the way, you mentioned that "profitability" in creating art... Believe me, profitability of the publishers is so far from anything relating to the art itself, that it doesn't make sense to discuss them on the same page...
PS: sorry for my bad English, that's not my native language.
Remember Fidonet? It had no anonymity, and had responsibility delegation. If you were not a "node" of the network, you could still participate as a "point". In this case, you had no responsibility to the network, but your "boss" (the network node you connected through) was responsible for all your actions (and he knew who you were and you could get beaten if you're doing something wrong, e.g. if you start spamming).
Why don't we use this model? Introduce a backbone network of mutually trusting certificate authorities, and require all mail to be signed with a valid certificate. It is the backbone member's responsibility to take due actions in case anyone having their certificate starts sending spam (revoke certificate, prosecute the user, etc), or else the member will be kicked off the backbone. The backbone member may delegate the right to issue certificates, but the responsibility still holds.
This scheme would make the backbone members know who their users and child authorities are, and prosecute the violators. You would still be able to have a free anonymous mailbox to receive mail, but the sender identity would always be revealed, and you would always be responsible for what you're sending.
Unfortunately it's obvious that if we retain an open non-whitelisting scheme, we HAVE to give up anonymity to prevent spam. There should be an easy way to find, block and prosecute the violators, in all other cases spam will continue.
1) Energy unit is a joule, not a newton.
2) Converting "newtons of weight" to "megatons of TNT" is valid only if your particle is made of TNT, and we won't be dealing with kinetic energy in this case.
3) mc^2/2 is half of rest mass energy of the particle, not the kinetic energy of the particle moving near the speed of light. Relative kinetic energy aims for infinity when approaching the speed of light.
Well, if the gravity of the asteriod is so weak, why having a separate probe for landing, or at least why trying to get it to the asteriod surface with such a complicated example of acrobatics and markmanship? Couldn't they land their main spacecraft? With all the fuel they have it would be easier to correct the errors, and getting off the surface would hardly be a problem.
Why couldn't thy just laugh at the AMERICANS?

I'm Russian and we have (or had?) Simpsons aired regularly on one of our remaining more-or-less free TV channels. The show is really loved, except for the translation which is bearable but no more than that, so even though my English is mediocre, I'm watching the show in original - blatantly pirated, yes... but I have no other way.
Our culture is very different but it would make no sense trying to localize the show. Most people know the American culture enough for it to be funny. Sometimes you miss a spoof here and there, but it's no big deal.
The attitude could be seriously different in a more religious country... but hell, could they be trying to convince themselves there's no such place as USA, and no such thing as alcohol or pork? And that's no propaganda of sex, drugs & pork! That's a parody! The creators of the show neither support drinking nor eating too much bacon, they're trying to laugh at that and fight that via laughing, everyone understands that and everyone learns laughing at themselves through Simpsons, that's including (I hope) most of the Arabs which you have too much stereotypes about. So I think this show will go well and it will be loved just like here.
... if I'm not mistaken. They seem to have hardware accelerated PS2.0 and some kind of efficient software VS emulation. Nowhere near 7800GTX of course, but I think it should be strange trying to beat it with some software-only emulation thingie.
Regarding the lowend non-integrated gpu death: they are already dead. There's no chance of being able to compete with Intel in this area, just because "integrated" means much cheaper production. Shared VRAM, no PCB, even no need for a separate GPU chip! It costs nothing, it sells for nothing, and it works fine. If you don't want modern games or some other complex 3D software, you will be completely satisfied with it.
It's a bit late to post here but I'd like to correct you.
These bacteria thrive in a highly acidic environment. Acid does not protect us agains them, that's the point why they are in our stomaches in the first place. They are (1) very acid resistant and (2) generate ammonia to neutraize the acid down to acceptable levels.
H.pylori is eradicated with a combination of an antibiotic[s] (e.g. amoxicillin) and a proton pump inhibitor (e.g. omeprazole). The latter one radically lowers stomach acid levels, to allow the stomach lining to heal. If low (vs. normal) acid levels would help the bacteria to survive, this scheme would never be used.

In capitalist America, the government IS the medium, and, as Marshall McLuhan said, the medium is the message.
The ultimate example is pr0n. If your whole movie must consist of sex scenes, there's just no chance to make it good for anything except jerking off, no matter how you tried.
