Back when I was 17 my mom hooked me up with a job at ScotiaBank ($10/hr writing perl scripts for some old AIX servers). They had a contract with a local taxi company and they gave out taxi slips to anyone who needed a ride, it was a pretty sweet perk. They also ran shuttle buses between the local office and the main ScotiaBank plaza downtown for employees that had meetings downtown, etc..
They already sell the Google Search Appliance, I doubt it will be long before they offer a similar package with Google Apps. My guess is that it will be out within a year.
I put myself on the U.S no fly list. No way will I fly to that god forsaken country. Any other country is welcome to receive my tourist dollars though.
advertising that TCO is higher for Linux than Windows (it's a lie, but what else should we expect them to say?)
But but but, 7-Eleven saved money! From the link:
7-Eleven Upgrades Its Strategic Retail System and Lowers Costs 7-Eleven Upgrades Its Strategic Retail System and Lowers Costs
After a detailed platform and application infrastructure analysis, 7-Eleven concluded that Windows Server System would save 20 percent on TCO versus Linux, and reduce deployment time of new capabilities to its stores by 50 percent, increasing its responsiveness to customer needs.
Hell, CDs are still essentially price fixed, and how long has that been going on?
I believe most of the price fixing is a thing of the past. I see some CDs for $4.99 at BestBuy, yet they used to be $15-20 a few years ago, perhaps thats because no one buys CDs anymore?
You know, if linux ever wants to become more popular, linux distros (and users) need to stop fighting amongst themselves. Who cares if you like Ubuntu better than Fedora? We need to stick together, even if we are "apart" distro-wise. Why must people attack others Operating System of choice? To make yourself feel better about your own OS choice? Quite sad really...
Ubuntu has over 4 million users. FC6 only has 2 million but that is only counting 1 version of Fedora Core, who knows if the 4 million Ubuntu users are *all versions* or just the latest version?
The home directory is where the system is going to store lots of stuff -- configuration files for applications, downloaded files, you can even install applications in there (if you're the only user who needs them). In this way the "home directory" concept is more expansive than the "My Documents" concept, which is only for document files (your configs are in the Registry, your apps are in Program Files). It's also why the home directory is more useful than My Documents -- if you regularly backup your home directory, you will have nearly everything you need to bring your Linux box back from the dead in case of emergency.
My Documents is only one part of it, you need to backup your entire Documents and Settings folder.
For example, a lot of programs store their config files in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ Also, some programs store data in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data (Local settings is a hidden directory)
So it's important to backup from C:\Documents and Settings\username\ and not just C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\
Also, it's trivial to backup/restore the registry, there are several tools that allow you to do this.
Then: Set up your modem to connect to your ISP and hope you don't get any incoming calls. Firewall? What's that? Now: ADSL. Wireless routers. Built-in firewalls.
One thing I'd like to add:
Then: ethernet cards sold seperately Now: Built-in gigabit ethernet in pretty much every motherboard
>I paid a rediculous amount, but 3 years later, I haven't felt the need to upgrade it once.
Perhaps that is because there is little to no bleeding edge software that is pushing the limits of mac hardware. Honestly, if you aren't a (hardcore) PC gamer, you have no reason to upgrade your computer every 2-3 years.
You originally compared Zone Alarm to iptables, obviously both are for different operating systems and different markets, yet you decided to mention them in the same sentence. I'm well aware of iptables on a router, I know because I have an old linksys WRT54G with the DD-WRT firmware.. I still wouldn't call that using iptables on Windows, I would call that a Windows box hidden behind a router with iptables.
Can I build my own mac with parts that I scrounged myself? No? Then please STFU with the buy a mac bullshit. Some people actually like building their own computers, I'll admit the number is small compared to those who don't build their own, but atleast we have the option.
If you have Comcast cable internet McAfee security suite is free. Other ISPs provide security products free of charge as well. Shop for a better ISP, not for a Symantec vendor. Also, it might be a good idea not to click on things you're not sure of and stop surfing for porn so much.
Why not use AOL while you're at it, I'm sure they have all sorts of security software for you...
Every year Guiyu takes in more than a million tonnes of computer waste, earning its residents, according to mainland press reports, RMB1 billion. All day, every day, mountains of wire and other equipment are burned in Guiyu's streets to obtain copper and other scrap metals. Printed circuit boards are heated over charcoal burners to liberate them of computer chips that might be reusable. The boards are then soaked in acid to extract gold, and the waste dumped alongside or in the nearby Lianjiang River. Printer cartridges are ripped apart for their toner and recyclable aluminium, steel and plastic parts. Cathode-ray tubes are hammered open for their copper yokes.
The result is that the air, land and water on which local people depend have all been poisoned. Local well water is already undrinkable, even after boiling, and fresh supplies must be trucked in from the town of Chan Dim 15 kilometres away. According to the report: "It is extremely likely that due to the presence of PVC or brominated flame retardants in wire insulation, the emissions and ashes from such burning will contain high levels of both brominated and chlorinated dioxins and furans - two of the most deadly persistent organic pollutants. It is also highly likely that cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are present in the emissions and ash."
"Compared to the rest of China, this place has more miscarriages," says Doctor Li Fai-ping, who works in the maternity ward at the local Chao Yang Yiu Fai Hospital. "Babies simply die in the wombs. There are several cases a month." She adds that the Government has done nothing to assess the damage being done by the e-waste industry. "No scientists have come here to test the effects [of the pollution on the community]. We are sent to work here, we are scared too." "The fact that nobody knows of the dangers is the most depressing thing," says BAN researcher Jim Puckett, co-author of the report.
Sure, we can mash up some circuit boards and make something. Burning them is silly.
Tell that to the poor people that are doing just that. http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsi d=81450
I saw a documentary about it a few years ago, people melting/burning PCBs for the copper/gold/whatever metal they can get their hands on. I saw women and kids burning old computer boards, they didn't seem to care that they were hovering right above the flames, inhaling the thick black smoke. I wish I could find some pictures, it was rather disturbing.
I used to hate the windows key for a long time, but over time I've actually become quite fond of it. I now use it several times a day (doing various hotkeys).
For example:
Winkey + E - Opens Windows Explorer (I use this one the most) Winkey + D - Show the desktop (quickly minimizes all windows) Winkey + R - Opens the Run dialog (same as clicking Start->Run, but much faster) Winkey + L - Lock the computer
I'm sure there are more, but those are the main ones I use.
Ya but this is GoDaddy we're talking about here...I don't they even know what "UTC" is.

It reminds me of Contra and Ecoquest. Looks pretty awesome IMO.

You must be a terrorist! Time for some water boarding (that's not torture ya'know, Cheney said it's just "a little head dunkin in some water")

Robyn Williams you say? Why yes, he ys one of my favouryte actors.
I really hate seeing words like Honourable" prefixed before that bitches name.

You got a point there. I stand corrected.
Construx was sweet, that brings back so many memories. Check out the AT-AT made out of Construx: http://www.splitreflection.com/ATAT.html

You ported iptables to Windows? Neato.
