In the name of all the good and decent things in the world - WHY? You've got the best workstation BSD variant available already - why do you want to downgrade your system?!
Because QT skips when I play.mpgs. Even with 512 ram, it friggen skips. I can't play divx files worth a darn, and the damn thing is lagging. If you have a better solution (OSX speed tricks and such) please email me [spambox@theapt.org]. (That is serious, not flaming.)
Yea, it pissed me off big time. The only reason why I worked with it, is because that system used to be OpenBSD, and I wanted to run mplayer. That's it.
MPlayer's assembly code doesn't work on OpenBSD (I'll have to try it with a new binutils), so I was SOL on that. I'll have to see how much of MPlayer's code is altivec optimized, so I can (hopefuly) use it on my TiBook. =)
My only problem with the FreeBSD install process, is that it installs XFree86 3.3.6 by default. If you install XF4.1 from the ports tree, it is quite difficult to configure and run it correctly. I ended up re-installing everything, skipping X, and installing it from ports. Everything was fine after that.
(BTW, I use FreeBSD for my workstation, with OSX for my laptop (TiBook), I'll install FreeBSD on it as soon as the PPC port is stable)
I failed speeling in skol. Sue me. [F7] when I use Word is good enough for me. Oh, well, what do you know, Word understands that, so when I post things that are vitally important, people give a rats ass.
BTW, I patented Really Dumb (TM). That'll be $5 for the use.;-)
It is (can be) quite easily a 64-bit OS. You have to re-compile it (that's a BENIFIT, not a DEFICIT..damn cnet shootouts), and change a few things here and there. Mostly CPU specific things, but otherwise, easy.
1) MS is trying to make OS illegal, by means of GPL. That's the easist target for them.
2) They were. What legal reasons do YOU have for the DOJ settling? AFAIK DOJ proved MS guilty, and in the penalty phase, they said "We can't prove MS guilty, so we will take the coward's way out"
3) $40 billion in the bank buys you lots of senators, and congressmen, and judges, etc, etc.
4) MS is in the middle of a mud-flinging campain right now. They'll (try to) make it illegal within 3 years. They like BSD because they can steal from it, without contributing. (And that's the point, and we like it that way!)
5) Good point.
6) True.
C'mon, you know the words!

Sell out! With me, oh yea! Sell out! With me tonight. The record company is gonna give me lots of money and everything is going to be all right!
Mail support increased exponentially in.9.9. I noticed a LOT less crashes with it. I use POP3, which is working quite well for me. Address book now works without crashing everything. =)
The poster wanted the European sensability to come back over the puddle, but you have a good point. So while I would like that sort of thing to happen, it will cause nothing but problems for the old-world
I think what Ebert has to say is little news to the average Slashdot reader
True, but his opinion just went out the the unwashed masses. He has MUCH more pull than Slashdot, in that respect. The discussion is mostly so the readers know that it's being publicized.
Apple has reviewed their software, and has (sorta) blessed it. It even has the same copywrite controls that the mac software has, preventing you from copying the audio tracks from the iPod.
That's NOT to say that you can't use it as a hard drive. You CAN copy stuff to and from it, in hard drive mode, but if you copied mp3's to it in hard drive mode, then you can't listen to them, and if you can listen to the music, then it's not in hard drive mode.
It applies to anyone who conducts buisness in California. (the vast majority of) Spam is considered an attempt to conduct buisness. It is a major setback, because if California's law stays up, then other states will get the same (or similar) laws, and same with other countries, etc, etc, etc.
Wow, that's a great idea. I do know how to use the single button, and I use the laptop as a main machine (as well as my FreeBSD workstation), so I really like having the external mouse avaliable, but I don't HAVE to use it, I just prefer to use it.

Case 1 can cost people money
Case 2 does not cost people money
Case 3 does not cost people money
(Indirect costs, such as increased garbage taxes don't count.)

Hmm....lets see.....I'll choose me for example
140(IQ)/1(EQ)=140
Lets take a senator (I'll choose Fienstien)
60(IQ)/120(EQ)=.5

yay, goatse.cx re-direct. I was waiting for one of those.

That has to be one of the greatest South Park referances I have seen in a long time. Mod it up!!!

If it's that easy, then there goes the neighborhood. I'll have to find an iPod and test that.
and when firewire comes out with 2.0, it'll be approx 800Mbs/sec, or 1.4Gbs/sec. (I keep hearing conflicting statements)

Not both directions. That's the part that bugs greatly. PF now has the both direction stateful.
