I agree with this.. here we only have about 50 users and i am the only admin, and yes i have a habbit of over building.. I run six servers all with FT drives and network cards. (most common failure point) they are also setup as a cluster so that services are provided by atleast 2 of the six.. if i have a drive die i don't have to jump to it i can take my time because everything is still going.. and i can take a server offline and no one will notice, it makes it nice to not get support calls, sure i had to spend a little more money per box but you know i never liked the idea of plain whitebox clusters. if i have drive die i want to replace it not replace it and reload everything so that it can get back to work. also makes it nice for backups becuse i only have to backup one server (the one that has all services) but even if that server is offline no one will notice. cost per box is about 800$ i think it is a nice middle ground and takes the advantages from both.
you know i saw the orignal this moringing.. and just as i was going to leave work i check and hot damn it is right here on the top.. i had to check the clock to make sure i didn't jsut dream that i spent the day working and praying i didn't have to be here for another 8 hours..
good thing it was a dupe.. becuse i don't think i could have taken the other option
personaly i use dual multi input monitors 1 is always my main comp.. but the other inputs are diffrent comps (server/testbed) it is only on racks that i bother wiht kvm's - still wishing for a kvm over ip
i only complain about the whole 50$ game thing when they also make me pay 15$ a month.. sorry have one or the other but no both.. sure 5-10$ for the game and 15$ a month ok..
a Cisco pix box is great - it (the cheep one) has two ether ports (some have more) on it packets go in both sides and it just collects them - have no idea what it does with them.. figured mabey they are trying to get enough to create their own black hole but not sure.
one day i found someone trying to get into one of our jetdirect print servers.. i am not sure why or even if they knew it was a printserver - to be honest it looked like some script kiddy just trying things to breake a telnet server..
i watched for a little bit, then went to close the port off and then realized.. what is the worst he can do . print something.. paper is cheep toner is cheep . mabey i will mail it to him if he manages to print something..
nothing ever came of it.. i came in the next day and they were gone.. checked the logs.. they never managed to get to anything..
if i had something that would have cut him off i never would have had that smile on my face
See we are just larg enough to have the budget to justify one full time sysadmin (i wish there were two) but as you know with a company that size there is always more work than one person can do. personaly i enjoy spending my time and making sure all that work gets done.
if your intrested in tech like that you need to look at DEP.. is seems to me better than a hardware virus scaner as it makes their methods of invasion almost useless the new intel chips support hardware DEP and server 2003 & XPSP2 support it (although it isnt' set to the most picky level in XP which makes it pointless)
the problem with the IT market is that it is a 24x7 job, sure my hours change all the time and i move my work around so i can spend time with my wife.. but personaly with 2 weeks vac what would i do.. to be honest i have so much comp time i could take a few months off but what to i care. I like my pay, i love my job, i love the small company i work for and have no intrest to move. sorry but the idea to taking time off seems mute to me.. i get my time and they get their time.. i know i am lucky to have the job i have, i know so many people who hate their jobs and are treated like trash.. personaly i work alot yes but i get the respect due for it, and if your not willing to get out of bed at 3 am and trouble shoot a switch then you don't need to work as the sysadmin for a company that is 24x7
i have a close job.. manage about 50 users 20 in house and 30 out side.. have 4 servers. I do it all from custom apps for clients to spending the night at the office so i can be there when the guys in Oman start their day.. i make about 60k a year with full health and 2 weeks paid vac (i never get the vac).
cost of living here is about 1,100 - 1,200 so i am happey
Set a ttl and have it relay messages back through its parent host..
I infect A to infect B+C to infect D+E+F+G and so on.. the messages are passed backwards Have A send random messages to a nother host.. pic up your messages somewere in the stream
they can't detect it by watching an irc server for inbound connections.. sure they can see who is infected but only one computer each way.. and if you have fun with it by fliping the address around (10.20.30.40 infects 40.30.20.11 infects 11.20.30.41....) just keep them guessing..
use normal transport sockets.. make it look like valid traffic.. i sware the writers are getting lazy.. make something creative.. i have seen spyware that is harder to remove than most viruses these days..
just some ideas for the people willing to write them..:)
well i tried that for my car.. didn't work.. i used it to open the door fine.. put it in the ignition turned it and the alam went off.. i had to call the dealer to tell me how to reset it
aperently my has a chip and i didn't know it (and no it isn't one you could see)
i thought perl developers where jsut jiberish writers. bang on the keyboard enough and something useful will come out of it

Intel and Laptop RAID?
·
· Score: 1
yes.. but think of it.. laptop with solid state drives & RAID - that is a dream come true.. and to be honest the 3oz weight is a small price to pay for redundant drives. yea power is an issue but that should be recouped by the new cpu and even the weight could be recouped by needing smaller heat sinks for the new cpu so all in all you might jsut get the same laptop with the same weight and power but with raid.. i don't see the reason you wouldn't want that
working on the tech bench i looked at the wrong computer thought it was off grabed a pci modem put it in the slot screwed it in.. looked up.. to see the screen turn on at a win98 desktop.. a found new hardware box.. found pci modem.. BSOD
i scratched my head and hit the reset.. all was good
only issue i have with this - we do have a drunk driving issue here in the USA but if you have ever been over seas it is quite diffrent.. in the EU there isn't realy issues with it.. alot of it has to do to the fact that they comsume alot more - but also it is a hell of alot harder to get a drivers license over there - there driving laws are far more rigid the fact that the passing lane is jsut that - you sit in the passing lane you get a ticket someone has to pass you on the right you get a ticket someone hits you in the rear when your not in the slowlane on a highway and you know what.. it is your fault.
personaly i loved driving over there it makes you realize how many idiots we have on the roads here.
the way i look at it.. the US's drunk driving problem is a manifistation of it's own laws and screwy way of doing things when it comes to autos.
I too... but i have to wonder what is the mass of the/. effect and was their server bolted to the ground to handel the dispersal of the energy from the impact?
no offence but i have a limited feeling for "all the IT support staff out there who have lost sleep for the past few days patching systems, updating anti-virus, and chasing down infected workstations"
sorry but they where doing their jobs.. they didn't do it before so now they are having to do it all at once.. i manage 3 small offices about 60 users.. only had one infection and it was someones home computer that hadn't hit the vpn in about 4-5 months... while we are small we make it a point to make sure things work no mater what.

*raises hand*
and your point.. how much diffrent than someone using a not yet invented real time DNA scaner..
when you look at it with that view
we all have the "Mark if the Beast"
*sits back down*
personaly i like the RFID tag idea.. but i am going to sheild mine if i ever get it.. don't want to be seen from space
oh i use vnc.. but when was the last time you vnc'd into a bios level raid rebuild
personaly i use dual multi input monitors 1 is always my main comp.. but the other inputs are diffrent comps (server/testbed) it is only on racks that i bother wiht kvm's - still wishing for a kvm over ip

i am so glad they cleared that up - someone might have been confused
