you make fun of that check engine light.. i have a 2001 Volvo S80... by far the crappiest car i have EVER owned.. it is less reliable than my 30+ year old MG.... i had the idler pulley designate while at a stop light.. thrashing that motor and bent 16 valves.. from my point sounded like it just turned off.. not once did the check engine or service light come on.. in fact the in-dash computer was still registering zero messages.
old Volvo's where good cars.. Ford makes great trucks (except late90's early 2k's) but they make one shittty ass Volvo.
not exactly.. their failure was not implementing some type of request/accept queue system.. and if they did they bypassed it and gave the accept message the ability to add people even if they where not in the queue, which is just stupid.
while i agree that In-Band Signaling is not easy to do right, and that they do have a limited communication channel.. they do not have a limited processing or back-end infrastructure..
i agree that the chance of getting robbed is higher physically than virtually.. but it would only take one major flaw in cert chain to make SSL pointless
but thanks for getting my point.. rather than the mods that marked the original as troll....
something like that could work - but would take foresight and planning... something banks are good at.. when it costs them money.. until fraud starts to hurt the banks and not the people we aren't going to see much change..
ready up on it some.. the moon's moving away from us is the transfer of energy from the rotation of the earth slowing down into potential energy of the moon in earths gravity well.
if we are to siphon off energy some/all/maybe more.. then we would be slowing/stopping/reversing the moon's accent from earth
as for the friction - i wasn't saying we could convert it all to electricity.. i was just trying to figure out the rough approximate amount of energy possible in the tides..
I have a friend do did something similar.. think he used a longer chin. he was getting out of his car and closed the door (which locked).. he was attached to the chain.. the chain to the keys.. and the keys in the car.. (closed the door on the chain).. it was quite funny.. especially sense his wallet was also on the end of the chain and contained his spare car key
well based on what i have read - as the moon/tidal effeects work the earth is slowing down and the moon is gaining potential energy related to earths gravity well by moving farther away - assume this is a colosed energy system..
assume we pull energy out of it.. the moon will come closer to earth (or reduce it's movement away) - so the total energy supply would be the potential energy of the moon in relation to earths gravity well.
PE = m x g x h
m = 7.3477 × 10^22 kg g = 9.8 m/s2 h = 363,104,000 m (using it's Periapsis)
"In about 5 billion more years, the useable hydrogen (not all the hydrogen) will have been converted to helium, and the Sun will start burning helium, and become a red giant."
if i remember right.. if it goes red giant it will grow larger than 1 AU so it will engulf earth..
basically.. we could increase energy consumption by a factor of 100 and only then would we be toying with maybe crashing the moon into us before the sun burns us away.
the air would have been nice.. if it had a REAL docking station.. and was changed so that it didn't have a drop down xicom style wired network connector..
oh and a couple extra usb ports and an option for a cheaper rotating drive.
as compared to what>? if i had wep or wap set up and they took the time to crack it - same result? person gets on and does something - both of which you have zero proof of - honestly a would think the FBI would believe the story better if the network wasn't encrypted vs it being.
you know.. i'm one of the lazy ones.. i don't bother with wep or wap or anything else.. just wide open and a mac filter.. why you ask?
because anyone who knows what they are doing can get around a mac filter - 9 out of 10 times that person is doing it because they have a need to fill (aka stuck on this side of down and needs a net connection)
what good is it?? well it stops my neighbors from connecting - and trying to download crap.. instead they just use someone else's - and it makes it simple for my wife to let others on.
as for them "stealing" my traffic.. i don't use public wired connections nor even my own wireless without a VPN tunnel to the router.. or the network i'm working on.
- How ..if the edge of the universe was collapsing causing bulkheads to be incomplete via walls no longer existing.. How exactly was there Explosive decompression? is the edge of the universe a vacuum? For it to explode and decompress then where did it explode too? you would have thought it would have just been something then nothing/ and no one would have been the wiser
so if i develop an app using their tools and want to port it i'm sol if they want to come after me..
the EFF refers to section 7.2 and sites competing App stores for Jail broken apps but it's really 7.1 & 7.2 that set it up and 7.3 that locks it down - basically saying how and who you can publish it and then locking it down to just them - and i know the line says using apple software.. BUT if you write a application for the iPhone then later port it.. your going to have a really hard time defending that the port at no point used apple software.
Honestly i think it is the "not ported" part that is going to hurt them - ported to apple from another platform or the other way - one of the line items on the dev agreement is that you aren't allowed to publish the source code to programs submitted to the app store - effectively preventing all GNU projects from making it - and preventing any type of developer community out side of apple.
the titamin/steel was the other persons comment - i was going off of the idea
as for the alloys and plastics - sorry sure they save weight.. but the plastics ALL break down.. they all age poorly.. compared to actual metal parts - and alot of the newer alloys i've run into working on cars - do not last las long..
sure saving weight is important - but you know.. we can save weight in alot of other places than under the hood - when you start adding up the weight increase from the cosmetic parts of cars it is amazing how heavy the interior is.. now weigh that vs replacing simple effective bolts and screws with plastic clips and clamps..
you make fun of that check engine light.. i have a 2001 Volvo S80... by far the crappiest car i have EVER owned.. it is less reliable than my 30+ year old MG.... i had the idler pulley designate while at a stop light.. thrashing that motor and bent 16 valves.. from my point sounded like it just turned off.. not once did the check engine or service light come on.. in fact the in-dash computer was still registering zero messages.

there is no excuse for this type of screwup..
The Universe itself is only 13.7 billion years old
and yet we still are looking for the expiration date..
i agree that the chance of getting robbed is higher physically than virtually.. but it would only take one major flaw in cert chain to make SSL pointless
but thanks for getting my point.. rather than the mods that marked the original as troll....
I haven't seen that yet.. so i looked it up..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRpWnK6Rg3E
that was funny.
something like that could work - but would take foresight and planning... something banks are good at.. when it costs them money.. until fraud starts to hurt the banks and not the people we aren't going to see much change..

sorry but believing you CAN'T do something - is the first step to being conned.
I didn't say it was easy.. BUT it is every possible
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/12/23/0046258&from=rss
Or you could go http://crypto.stanford.edu/ssl-mitm/
and get it's cert signed - what you say? it has to be a signing cert?
http://www.win.tue.nl/hashclash/rogue-ca/
sure it might take a little setup.. but again.. if you own the router you own the network..
so your saying a Live CD going out over a router to the net is "completely secure" if i have control over that router???
if i control the router.. i control your connection - you might think you are connecting to the bank.. but your not.. your connecting to me..
owning the router/switch is the highest form of MIM for network data..

a lot of that was rough arm chair numbers..
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1643562&cid=32118268
pointed out a better equalization..
as for the friction - i wasn't saying we could convert it all to electricity.. i was just trying to figure out the rough approximate amount of energy possible in the tides..
this is /. - we are all arm chair science..
but thanks.. i'll look at that next time i have to figure out how much energy the moon exerts when it falls on someone.. :)
I have a friend do did something similar .. think he used a longer chin. he was getting out of his car and closed the door (which locked).. he was attached to the chain .. the chain to the keys.. and the keys in the car.. 474 × 10^18 = AEC = whole planet annual energy consumption
PE/AEC = 551,607,527,000 years....
so the answer is .. keep current rates.. and assume we could get it all from here.. 550 billion years..
according to this #19

we're Sys Admins - redundancy is our way of life - what else did you expect?
*door screech* Parity! get back in the closet..
Now what where we talking about?
the air would have been nice.. if it had a REAL docking station.. and was changed so that it didn't have a drop down xicom style wired network connector..

one of the methods i have seen is using a server to cordinate the transfer (i think AIM does it to set up driect connection between 2 nat connections)
we have 3 computers
A = person behind nat
B = person behind nat
C = publicly addressable server
A and B both talk to C (say C is a tracker)
A wants direct connection to B so it tells C
C then tells B that A wants to talk to it
B then creates a second session to C opening anew reply port in the NAT, C then takes that return contact info and passes it to A
A uses the return info C got from B's second connection to contact B allowing B to now have a conversation with A via A's new connection info.
I know thats a wall of text but it is easier to explain on paper or in person
we are on /. i'd hope most people here got it old or young..
Bit torrent and P2P would still work - if the client and server/tracker understand how to make connections through double nat..
i always wondered about that
- How . .if the edge of the universe was collapsing causing bulkheads to be incomplete via walls no longer existing.. How exactly was there Explosive decompression? is the edge of the universe a vacuum? For it to explode and decompress then where did it explode too? you would have thought it would have just been something then nothing/ and no one would have been the wiser
I apologize - had it wrong about the source.
it's you can't publish your application else where

so if i develop an app using their tools and want to port it i'm sol if they want to come after me..
