Are you saying that Flash is never a good idea to put online?
No - and you already gave a good example of a useful application. But Flash is annoying when used for menus or any other way to access static content, or the entire site is just one big Flash file.

I'm still using Thunderbird 1.5.0.14. Did I miss something? No? That's what I thought. PS: Tried some 3.x version once, but it was to slow and strange.
It is kind of sobering to see how the concentrated company backed effort of Chrome overtook the 10 years old Firefox in just a few months, with FF running behind ever since. Be it optimizing for speed, new web technologies, UI design or even version numbering, the Mozilla folks look at the tail lights and try to keep up. BTW: I'm still using FF because of the add-ons and free GUI configurability.
> the first link in TFS is the first such news story I've seen Well, it was obvious that Slashdot needed to plug into the biggest current story, and games was the way to go, despite the fact that all/. editors should know that readers here don't dream of rocket launchers for real life. Oh wait...
Yes, this is the most "scary" part. Sure there are many trolls who disturb for "fun", but one can spot if someone actually is as full of hate/stupidity as their comments look. The first time I looked into this abyss was many years ago when Yahoo had commenting enabled. Tribalism, racism and religious fanatism are all around us.
In other news, in Soviet Russia a Beowulf cluster of hackers downloads malware from YOU! (Which means that you are an insensitive clod.) My lawn is yellow these days, BTW.

I always use a "bookmarklet" to search instead of Google's page. Create one and include search terms like "-blogspot.com -lyrics" and refine that way your searches. If have several defined searches and have put them as buttons on the bookmarks toolbar. Here's one for Firefox (one line, will be broken):
From personal experience I recommend to settle in the "elitist snob mode" without trying to communicate that status nor the superior satisfaction you get from it to others - they won't understand, and dumb answers are avoided. BTW, A/B tests don't tell the whole story. MP3s, independent from their bitrate, get on my nerves after about an hour of listening, and I need silence. This does not happen with CDDA quality audio, nor - and that is the interesting thing - with old tapes recorded from vinyl, despite the fact that in direct comparison an MP3 sounds "better" at first.
A written, physical letter is like a hand-made gift in these times. Between that and sites like Facebook there is still E-Mail - faster and more practical than the first, but much more personal (and hopefully with thoughtful content) than the latter. E-Mail is my favourite tool since 1991 to keep in contact with people I care about.

... because there a thousands of Web "developers" who are too lazy or too dumb to learn correct code.

Bash scripts.
I wonder how a few hundred mainframes plus storage arrays would fare in terms of TCO.
Lynx? Well. There's not very many good reasons to use lynx as your only browser ..
I'm too stupid to get X running, you insensitive clod!
Which means that if you fart while sitting on the Asteroid you'll reach escape velocity.

Hmm, you just summarized one of the principal problems of humanity with a car analogy. Congrats!
I find it humorous
Yeah, that's the best way to deal with it.

The combined noise of your and the ACs wooshes was deafening.
Lynx
we've got more speed, more bandwidth, more information providers and services and more users
Agreed. Quantities have grown exponentially.
making it better and better
I disagree. Qualities went down: it got more superficial, more commercial, and much more censored.
shut down the computer
I can't, I forgot the root password, you insensitive clod!

Let's just hope such devices are not used in nuclear power plants. BTW, are power plants connected to the Internet?
I followed your advice, but now it says "No space left on device".
