    Awww, poor kids, their dad has no sense of humour.

    Apparently, including the mods. I foresaw that and included a smiley, but it didn't help.
    In fact, having kids seems to correlate with a low sense of humour (or lack of ability to simply ignore a joke they can't laugh about). Sadly, I've seen this in real life as well. I'm pretty sure the GP was able to laugh about the dumbest jokes until approx. 9 years ago.

    Now's it's 2015. The James Webb space telescope is broken. How do you fix it?

    An engineer at the control center invokes the REPAIR sequence. This will activate the on-board robot and HD video for the engineer so he can complete the sequence remotely. The robot has different exchangable tools, and a small stock of servicable parts is onboard.

    ... which would be unprofessional and probably reckless behaviour on behalf of the astronauts. One can understand the emotional reasons, but the huge efforts made for their safety would be in vain if they are not honest about their capabilities.

    Absolutely. What I don't get is that misleading and downright dangerous diet "advice" is being published since decades, and the authors, instead of being sued, get rich. Add to this the outdated and flawed official "food pyramid", plus incredibly cheap junk food for those who don't care, and in the end almost no one eats well and balanced.

    The HD version is awesome. More FPS and longer would be appreciated! :-)

    In the 90s there was a great late night program on German TV called "Space Night / Earth Views". While obviously only SD, those were mesmerizing films with perfect ambient/chill background music. Examples (headphones recommended):

    My guess: he wanted to boost his bonus and gambled. He failed, tried to earn the loss by some more gambling, but as it goes the casino won.

    The question is, how was he able to hide these transactions from controlling, and was it even difficult to do that.

    To add insult to injury, this is a bailed out bank!

    The problem with these statistics is that they are unreliable for long term prospection; i.e. one big incident for nuclear or hydro (dam collapse) near populated areas would skew the result for all times.

    or is this something more advanced? If not, how is this news?
    And if optical media would be obsolete, why would one want to continue using ISO files?

    Someone mentioned it already, but that old saying "you are what you eat" might have some really deep truth in it. It also reminds of those Asian "body & mind are one" teachings many practitioners of modern scientific medicine like to laugh about.
    Anecdotal evidence as observed in people around me: lots of sweets > whiny, anxious; vegetarian > nervous, grumbly; lots of animal fats > aggressive, superficial; lots of fruit > funny, clown.

    GB is part of the geographical area "Europe", just like, say, Crete and Mallorca. So, the GMT+1 crowd is just practically oriented. Do you need a timezone to feel special?

    Now, if this change would disturb tea time, you might actually have a real argument.

    I don't care about the fact that someone is a fan of a corporation (there are fans for Adidas, Nike, car brands, etc.), luckily not my problem.

    But "clever and creative"? Creative are the people who thought up a satellite based navigation system. Clever those who realized it. Creative were the people programming the runner app. Clever is Apple that they got their share when the guy bought it.

    Well I guess this Y2K+. Before that we did something just for fun. Now we do something for fun, feel important, post a photo on a blog and have Slashdot run it as a front page story so people can make lame com... nah, I'll stop now.

    If you argue in ecological terms, don't forget the impact of new hardware: get raw materials out of earth - ship them to production - produce parts - ship parts to assembly - ship machine to customer. This offsets the ecological "break even point" quite some time, in favor of using old hardware longer.

    Yes, that's what flash is for - multimedia content.
    But when Flash get's used for menus, opening links, displaying images, scrolling text, and all the other basic functionality you can implement correctly with HTML/CSS, then it is a PITA: text is either too big or too small, browser font settings are ignored, page doesn't adapt to browser window width, it's slow and unresponsive on weaker machines. Thanks, but no thanks.
